I want to thank everyone for all the well-wishes. I also want to let everyone know that there are no changes planned for the winery, at least for a while, which is one of the reasons I decided to sell to Louis Roederer.

Of course this was a difficult decision for me to make. My life of wine has been more than 45 years; 22 years ago I founded the Merry Edwards brand. I wanted to be able to put my life’s work in the hands of someone who understood our wines and our vineyards, and who would care for our employee family. I also wanted to make this transition while I have the energy to help create a successful future for our company.

I saw in the Roederer family a history of dedication to place and to maintaining the integrity of the family-owned wineries they have purchased. Their attitude is based on the long-term view, which is refreshing. Roederer buys to hold and improve. They take their time to find companies that share their core values. One look at our vineyards told them that we care deeply about the land and its stewardship.

I spent quite a bit of time with many of their top team members. Like us, they are a passionate, hardworking group. Many of their employees have decades of history with them. They appreciate our wines and what it takes to make them. I developed a level of trust that allowed me to move forward with the transaction and to commit a year as GM for them.

It’s been an amazing ride, but it’s not over yet!

Does anyone know Louis Roederer's post-acquisition track record with U.S. wineries?

We visited Merry Edwards back in 2013 and have enjoyed her Sauvignon Blancs over the years.  Hopefully not much will change.

On the plus side, after 200+ years Roederer is still family owned. When they bought Scharffenberger they took the brand off the market because of confusion with Schramsberg. Better them than one of the big corporates.
