Not sure if this fits with the theme of this thread, but a package arrived from Russ and Daughters today. Thanks to Goldbelly, they deliver. The order came in a styrofoam box with plenty of those fake ice blocks, so it arrived cold. There were containers of smoked salmon and whitefish salad, chopped chicken livers, and lox. Plus a very nice loaf of pumpernickel. What a treat. This isn't a cheap nosh, but what a treat. That food is downright delicious. I'm not Jewish but I could eat this food every day.

Later today, I'm expecting a package of two pizzas from Di Farra Pizza. I'll report when I taste it.

And it arrived! Packed with dry ice, and including a small pack of grated parmeggiano and fresh but frozen basil leaves, the two pizzas look luscious. Alas, I have a belly full of chopped liver from Russ and Daughters, so the pizzas will remain frozen until tomorrow....they look legit.

We called in an order and picked up from IndAroma and it was very good. Nicely spiced and a ton of food.

I called in the order and it was ready when Kay got there. She said they were quite nice people. Order was taken buy a very efficient lady and they got the order right and it was on time.

More details

Marianne and I have been focusing on our local neighborhood restaurants when we order for pickup (HATE Doordash and its ilk). They aren't fine dining, just plesantly consistent purveyors of their various cuisines. We got a solid set of ramens from Boru, a more than satisfactory tandoori lamb and Chicken Tikka from Aroma, good burgers from DGB in Shirlington.

I know this forum often tends to focus on the higher tier of dining destinations, but I think it's the solid, mid-level dining options we patronize that are most at risk of disappearing over this summer.

Have you ever had it fresh at the store?  The reason I ask is that I grew up eating their pizza (circa late 60s) and it tastes nothing now like the pizza I had as a kid.  I'm not saying the current pizza is bad (although I tried a slice maybe 10 years ago and it wasn't great), it's different.  I used to have a slice and a coke before enjoying a movie at the Midwood Theater.  Maybe there was a different pizza place nearby and I'm thinking of that place.  We always called it Avenue J pizza and then it was the best pizza.  I didn't even know its name until my sister said it was showing up in the Zagat's guide.

Not to cast aspersions, but something else may have changed since the late 60's

Just had that awful moment where a restaurant that's been a big part of my life here in DC will have to close permanently if things don't turn around in the next week or two. I work in finance, I know this is all real in the abstract, but hearing it from a family favorite really was just a heart wrenching moment.  What makes this even tougher is that this is a place that does delivery and carryout - and they're still just weeks from the end.  Ugh.  Ugh ugh ugh.

Sorry to hear that Zgast, hopefully the window of time will be longer and they will get enough business to continue. Some of my relatives are in the food business and delivery ones have been doing well actually almost like normal and the sit down restaurants are in various states of struggle.

Emotionally it's hard to lose a tie to a place that is like a home outside of home.

I heard P.F. Chang's in Friendship Heights has closed permanently - is it that?

I'm craving good sushi.  Has anyone had any luck with takeout/delivery options?

Our neighbors got pickup from Sushi Ogawa the other day.  This is the $90 "Sushi and Rolls Assortment" on their take out menu.  They said it was good and the fish looks nice, but it's too bad there's not more variety.  Chalk it up to supply chain issues I guess?  Or people just wanting the basics in the current circumstances?

Here is about $90 of sushi from Nama Sushi that we got tonight. It was very good. It’s the $30 sushi assortment plus a variety of a la carte nigiri and rolls.

I appreciated them having a decent though perhaps not decadent variety on offer, though these are not decadent times.

It seems to be incredibly cheap?  15 orders of nigiri plus three maki . . . So 18 orders for $90 comes out to $5 an order?  Maybe not dollar sushi but cheaper than Whole Foods?

Purple Patch again tonight.

We spend far too many nights at their downstairs bar in normal world.  The food is good, we love the staff, and they have a good beer list, a decent assortment of affordable wine and nice cocktails. Their takeout has been good too. I hope they make it through, because this is one of my places.

We got dinner, and I picked up dinner for our 2 regular dinner companions, dropped it at their houses, then we ate together over zoom. I want to be eating together at the bar there again.

But the food travels well. We had an order of lumpia, that needed to be re-crisped in the toaster oven. Then he had fried rice with philipino sausage and an egg on top and I had chicken adobo radicchio wraps. And a bottle of white wine, but I forget what kind, and it is in the kitchen, and I don't feel the need to get up to look at it.

Also, added salad that we made.

One friend had lumpia and tocino and liked it. The other had sissig and papaya salad, and that was also good.

In all seriousness, is there something I'm not seeing? The photo I looked at is $50-worth of sushi, max, with a quality not any better than H-Mart (if I payed $50 for this, I wouldn't rush back).

Ok I got the Sushi Ogawa picture mixed up with the one from Nama Sushi, as you can tell from my description of the 18 orders (of double nigiri plus the maki). The platter in the Nama Sushi picture does not look incredibly cheap for $90.

Ogawa's photo looked like a $90 sushi platter.

NRG Provisions and Right Proper both delivering some great beer in DC as well if you’re interested...

I got an order from NRG Provisions with a variety of items, including some beer. We haven't tried that yet, or the only prepared food item (vegetarian chili), but the Red Apron ground beef in the order...OMG, that made some great hamburgers. I took a bite and the quality of meat was unmistakable. My burger cooking skills are modest, but these were fantastic.

My +1 and I live within Thai Square's limited delivery range in Arlington, so we ordered in from them for the second time during this pandemic.  We totally overordered, and gave a heavy tip, in hopes of keeping them around (though I think future development of that shopping area may be a bigger threat).  Dinner was: sun-dried beef, fried tofu squares, laab gai, crispy duck, pad kee mao with chicken, and sticky rice with mango.  If my wife and I were both pregnant - not a possibility for multiple reasons - and starving, we still would not have finished it.  All the food was totally on point, great heat, and especially great wok flavor on the pad kee mao.  I really enjoy making pad kee mao myself, and I often avoid ordering things that I can make at home.  Not in this case.

From last Saturday, beautiful Sapidus Farms Oysters w/ Ramp Mignonette (Keepwell Vinegar) that I shucked for the first time.

I purchased my Oyster Oyster Shuck Kit for $36 online via Tock on Friday night at 8PM from SCRAPPY'S Bagel Bar Pop-up.  On Saturday, I picked up at Estadio Restaurant.  Included in the kit were 1 dozen Sapidus Farms Oysters, Ramp Mignonette, 1 Oyster Shucking Knife, 1 Kitchen Towel and 1 set of easy instructions to follow.

I believe the kits will continue to be offered online at SCRAPPY'S.  You can order Friday night starting at 8PM for Saturday pickup and order Saturday night starting at 8PM for Sunday pickup.  The Spring Bialy, Pizza Bagel, Bagel Sandwiches and assortment of Bagels and Schmears are super tasty.

I look forward to purchasing more oysters and sauce for future enjoyment.
