RIP racing legend Phil Hill, world champion (1961) and one of only two Americans to hold that honor. Hill inherited the points lead from teammate Wolfgang von Trips after the latter's fatal collision with a young Jim Clark; in an age when one-in-four top drivers would eventually die from racing accidents, he never suffered a major injury.

As we sit on the balcony and watch two beams of light rise over Lower Manhattan - to Richard Keane and Bill Meehan. We miss you both, and remember you, and all those effected by the events of September 11.

Paul Newman...a true American classic.

With profits from Newman's Own, he gave more than $150 million to charities and social welfare organizations. He joked that his salad dressings and pasta sauces earned more than his films.

Newman continued to act in recent years, notably as the stage manager in a 2002 Broadway revival of Thornton Wilder's "Our Town," but he was certain acting was not his whole life. He said that over the toilet bowl in his office bathroom he hung a letter from a fan -- of his tomato sauce. The letter ends: "My girlfriend mentioned that you were a movie star and I would be interested to know what you have made. If you act as well as you cook, your movies should be worth watching."

Not really a whom, but to the loss of another independent bookseller...RIP Olsson's

PRESS RELEASE

SEPTEMBER 30, 2008

Olsson Enterprises, Inc., trading as Olsson's Books & Records closes stores and petitions court for Chapter 7 conversion.

Olsson Enterprises, Inc., trading as Olsson's Books & Records, Record & Tape Ltd., and Olsson's Books announced today that it has closed all of its locations and petitioned the U.S. Bankruptcy Court District of Maryland for conversion of its current Chapter 11 protection to Chapter 7.

The reasons given for the petitioning were stagnant sales, low cash reserves, and an inability to renegotiate current leases, along with a continuing weak retail economy and plummeting music sales.

Olsson's was established in 1972... Olsson's earned its reputation as a locally-owned community-oriented retailer with a knowledgeable staff selling a wide selection of books, music, video and gifts.

RIP, Studs Terkel, the voice of Chicago.

As the Post says, "He was a cigar and martini man, white-haired and elegantly rumpled in his trademark red-checkered shirts, an old rebel who never mellowed, never retired, never forgot, and 'never met a picket line or petition I didn't like.'"

To Lewis Hamilton. For real this time.

And Massa pere et fils who made it such an amazing season.

As well as a special thanks to Timo Glock and Ross Brawn for not changing tires when everyone else did.

Claiborne Pell. All I can say is thank you. I'm doing my best to give back, RIP.

Hear, hear. Anyone who got a Pell grant to go to college should raise a glass to a man who cared.

To Gaston LeNôre, without whom we might not know Michel Richard.
sad.gif When I turned twenty, I lived just down the street (avenue de Wagram) from what might have been the flagship patisserie. M. LeNôre got me through the ordeal of writing four, hefty term papers en francais. I'd dash down the street in my Earth Shoes for an individual portion of chocolate mousse, elegantly wrapped, as soon as I made it through the final draft of my first page. Had no idea until long after college why my precious rewards were so, so good.

I still have no idea what "rich Corinthian leather" is, and Mr. Roarke never did much for me, but Star Trek II is the best of the lot, and his portrayal is a good amount of the reason why.

Cordoba. I like what they have done to my caaaaarrrrrrr.

And to Patrick McGoohan as well. Bad day for classic sci-fi.
It would take a small wine collection to drink along to a rewatching of his wonderful the prisoner. We have sat thru it end to end, twice, and loved every second! Living in Harmony and Free for All and the two part final episodes are some of the greatest filmmaking of all time! I would put Living in Harmony up with Kurosawa's Yojimbo as the perfect Westerns.

Not sure you'll be happy that they're remaking The Prisoner...

Not sure you'll be happy that they're remaking The Prisoner...
a mini series with only one number 2? Because if it is just one "episode, how the hell are they taking 5 months to film it and if it is a long complex storyline, how can they not have a changing #2? Even if its Ian McKellen, WTF?!?!?!?

I love the Sir Lew Grade quote in Patrick McGoohan's obit about not understanding a word of that PMcG said in pitching The Prisoner yet "green lighting" it anyways. Don't think that would happen today.

I fear that this The Prisoner will be to the original as Korbel is to the real stuff. For the second time today, I return this website to its original location from my soapbox. WTF are my anti anxiety pills? :P

in case anyone is interested click

The title really should be updated to read "to whom or to what are you drinking right now" :P

This poor little satellite, and the team who worked on her, has had a rough time. A picture of the trauma here. That was a bad day at work. I'm glad to see her go.

Stupid mutts!!! One day they will see past their biases and actually choose America's favorite breed

P.S. I fixed the link for you - but what should I expect from a spaniel fan? They might as well be cats!

Thanks Bella - I fixed the link again (your fix still didn't work)...and we won't get into cats - since they are far superior to their canine brethren wink.gif .

You have to admit it's nice to see an old guy come out of retirement and show those fancy pants whippersnappers that age and experience count for something smile.gif

Please raise a glass in honor of Claudia, our cat. She passed away today, too young, too still full of life, but it was her time. We're torn up something terrible, but she was one of the most laid back kitties ever.

A couple more photos of Claudia.

We toasted her with some Champagne yesterday again.

I'm so sorry about Claudia.

I just went through all the photos, and my favorite was #5, Take 1 of the Christmas photo shoot. Claudia looked downright regal in that photo - sitting on her perch, and lording over the mugging and buffoonery that was taking place before and below her.

Thanks dude. She was a special kitty. She always knew how to sit so great as you said. That was actually a fun thing to do in retrospect even though we thought it was stressful at the time.

The best pizza joint on Earth. Or at least Coney Island.

After a little lounging around we made the hike down to Coney Island, and worked our appetite back up on the Cyclone, the Wonder Wheel and a couple of other "National Register of Historic Places"-type rides, and the brief walk to Totonno's Pizza. Much has been written about Totonno's on eGullet, and I have little to add, save that it may now be my favorite pizza place in the world.

I also found the place a little surreal - this tiny slice of 50's-era Italian- American life, complete with extended family on the sidewalk in lawn chairs - dropped into a neighborhood that too often resembles a combat zone. With few exceptions, the walk to Totonno's from the beach is relentlessly oppressive - vacant lots, boarded up houses, small children with no shoes. Then you turn the corner onto Neptune, a wide, almost treeless street, bright and hot and lined on both sides with the kind of body shop you might go to if you were looking to get your wheels back after finding your car up on blocks. A lot of glare and razor wire; everybody smokes and everybody looks you up and down as you walk by.

When, about a block away, you see the awning and the family out front, you know where to turn in. Inside, there's a couple of bikers, a couple of yups (besides us), a large Italian family and a soft-core porn queen getting shot for an upcoming issue of FHM.

The kids from the sidewalk are running in and out, the shooter's strobe keeps flashing, there's a limo pulling up, the handlers and make-up artist dance in and out of the first booth. And, through it all, the pizza guy keeps turning out brilliant, crisp, spicy pies, with an expression that says: just another day at the office.
