Waitman Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 Cerphe. May not mean much to anybody else, but sometime about 1976 I turned the clock-radio that roused me in time to get the bus to Oakland Mills Senior High from WPGC to WHFS. Life changing. Damien. Weasel. And Cerphe. Cerphe, btw, does the intro on the immortal and overlooked Waiting For Columbus, by Little Feat. Download it today and get ready for some serious southern fried boogie.

zoramargolis Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Bea Arthur. She was a brilliant comedienne, with the greatest timing I've ever seen. I had a small part on an episode of Maude and had a chance to watch her work, up close. She was an inspiration and a role model for all of us sarcastic tall gals with deep voices.

Poivrot Farci Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 Louis Marceau Albert Fructidor Volat.Grandfather. Member of the French Resistance who was privy to the invasion, based on the verse from a Verlaine poem passed on..."the long sobs of autumns's violins".Family was taken into cellar 65 years ago as bombs fell on the nearest train station (Evreux). Family lore has is that the first Americans Louis Volat met were American Indians and that he told the enemy to go in the direction of the neighboring village in which "les Indiens" were ready... and waiting.
deangold Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 At 7am this morning a gentle soul was accepted into the celestial opera company. Peter is probably right now joyful at ebing with all the greats who ahve passed on beofre him. His greatness was not in his voice, his career but in the joy he brought to all his friends. I only knew Peter from his visits to Dino and yet his leaving today is a great loss and a cause to celebrate his wonderful life. Cheers!

aaronsinger Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Sam, Marvin, Jackie, Tammie, Biggie, Pac, Big Pun, now Michael, time to join the Night Shift I feel like I should've heard that song before. 2Pac and Nas' "Thugz Mansion" reminds me of it. Sometime tonight, I'll tip back the only drink I have in the house [Wasmund's Whisky] and listen to Rhymefests' mixtape Man in the Mirror.

ol_ironstomach Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 Today is the 65th anniversary of the start of Operation Anvil: the Allied liberation of Burgundy. "We must not forget 1870," a French officer told Mr. [Wynford Vaughan] Thomas later that day. The officer said that one of the last battles of the Franco-Prussian War had been fought around Nuits-St.-Georges, an important Burgundy wine town, and that Prussian reserves, rushing to the front, had marched through and destroyed the legendary vineyards of La Tache, Romanee-Conti and Richebourg. At that point, Mr. Thomas wrote, a young officer rushed in to announce that weak points in the German defense had been found. "And, colonel," the officer said, "every one is on a vineyard of inferior quality." An interesting NYT article from the Oct 13 1870 issue here, particularly the prescient commentary at the top of the second column.

Hannah Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Who said (and I paraphrase)"Britain no longer cooks [they} just watch it on TV" Yes, but that was in one of his particularly testy periods, when he'd had a falling out with the BBC and had to move the series to Channel 5, with a corresponding loss of prestige and presumably money. It's a real shame - he'd been diagnosed with colon cancer about a year ago, had just gotten the news that the treatment was going very well, sat down to watch a new TV bio of himself, and boom. (He also wins the prize for the best cooking show theme ever - the Stranglers' "Waltzin' Black".)
