To everyone on this website who volunteers at DC Central Kitchen.

And, especially, to DanielK for his tireless efforts at organizing DCCK Night. THANK YOU DANIEL!

To my 1992 Bridgestone MB4, an amazing bike which got me to and from class during grad school, all over Payne's Prairie, along the Katy trail, across the W&OD, to the C&O canal, and, until today, was still all original. The chain blew on yesterday's ride, and today it looks like the bottom pulley on the rear dérailleur is shot, hence the broken chain. I guess you can only baby them so long before you have to get new components. :) Maybe I can get by with just the pulley...

To a friend who died last night, after a long and painful decline due to cancer. As one friend put it, "...he was able to maintain his sense of humor and face it all with grace". Godspeed....

To Morrie Yohai, inventoin the of the Cheez Doodle. He passed away at age 90. The glow-in-the-dark snackfood Hall of Fame would be nothing without him. The orange fingers were a small price to pay.

To Liesel Flashenberg, founder of Through the Kitchen Door, truly one of the best people I have ever known.

This is very upsetting to me - I had met Liesel a couple of times, and really liked her. :)

Here's to the power and tree crews that spent the day in my neighborhood. You are more appreciated than you know.

Seconded.

(these are all neighbors)

(my house & car emerged unscathed)

(luck of the draw...)

Glad you are OK. We drew an Ace too - I wish I could say the same for all my neighbors.

To the geeks at Crackberry.com who gave me the Star Wars imperial march ringtone for free.

I have that! And my default is the Doctor Who theme. Wheeee!

This post is off-topic and will self-destruct in two minutes.

A lager in fond remembrance of Carolyn Jensen Chadwick, a modest, self-effacing genius who conceived and produced "Radio Expeditions" and much more great audio journalism during her long career at NPR. She was a friend and neighbor, and when offered something to drink, always asked for "beer--the lightest one you've got."

To Dr. Fred Kushner ... because if you're going to be someone's right-hand-man/Girl Friday, and give up your Sunday and your day-off-Monday because no one else you work with can meet their deadlines, it's a lot easier if he appreciates your work, and if he's right there plugging away with you all day on a weekend. Here's to the treatment of STEMI and the throw-down still to come.

...And, in case anyone is curious, I finished the Chicago marathon (my first marathon ever) in 5:44:14. Woo hoo! Good thing, too, after all that food...

To bettyjoan! This cup's for you.

I love the idea, I have often thought about sending out a bleg on the help wanted for something non-food related, but having a running list would be even better. I do think that a little explanation as to why the individual/group/company is being recommended should be required.

Oh, and good job Bettyjoan, though I think that my thighs and nipples just chaffed thinking about running for almost 6 hours.

To homeownership. :)

Yeeeee!!!

Congratulations!!! We are closing on our first home in a month - I will certainly be happy for the whole process of buying to be over (so I can start the process of enjoying).

Thanks to all for the congrats on the marathon - it was an amazing experience.

This weekend, I have been drinking to my sister and her husband, whose awesome wedding left us with enough overstocked beer and wine to be happy for quite some time (as I hope they are in their marriage).

To all the folks who I met last week in Portland (errr, week.5 ago, I guess) and whose names are all running together. What an amazing group of just great folks.

Now to continue trying to talk them into coming to DC...

Happy birthday! And you are NOT old.

Seconded. You looked fantabulous when I visited on Tuesday. Happy belated bday!

Whiskey soon.

That is not a good introduction to home ownership. Enjoy the whiskey :).

To my nephew, Costi Caset, who this Friday won the 1st Annual "Copa Valentin Caset" (the National 18 and Under Championship Tournament, re-named this year in honor of his older brother, somewhat of a polo prodigy who played his first professional tournament at age 10 and who passed away not quite yet one year ago).

This on top of winning both "El Intercolegial" and the Under 20 Championship Tournaments back-to-back just beforehand as well, all while still 17.

Never will "levantar una copa" have such meaning, and never will a young man be so honored as by this sweetest of all brothers whose only thought ever in life was to live up to his idol and hero, his big brother--a big brother whose every goal and effort was for them to play side by side.

Santa Paula Cup (El Intercolegial) - Polo By Garrahan

My first toast tonight will be to the great Ron Santo. RIP.

As my first post, I will say I also will be raising my glass to one of my two baseball heros growing up, Ron and Ernie. RIP!

Elizabeth Edwards

Ditto. Last night, the reports said she had "several months." This morning, the news was reporting "several weeks." That in itself was shocking to me, so I was really taken aback to hear the news just now when my husband told me.

Another drink to the memory of Elizabeth Edwards. I had the good fortune of meeting her when she came to WAMU last spring. She left a very strong impression as a truly sincere and compassionate person. She seemed genuinely grateful for our conversation. I am very saddened by this unexpected news.

Can I say just how much this news sucks ventworm nuts?

Well let me be the first male to chime in and say that John Edwards was a fucking scumbag for abandoning his wife when she was sick with cancer.

Hope you are not the last Rocks. Ms. Edwards was a very strong woman and she deserved better I think. I will keep her children in my thoughts.

My deepest love and sympathy to all of us that have had to deal with cancer either personally or with a loved one. I am now raising one to you. :)

Dang, this is #500 for me. Thanks Don, for making a place where I have felt so very welcome for the last 5.5 years. I am very grateful for all that you worked so hard to create here. So I'm raising a glass of my favorite plonk which is much less than you deserve.
