jparrott Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 Amarula is a product of SA wine/spirits behemoth Distell. They list AV Imports of Columbia, MD as their US importer for Amarula. AV's phone number is 410 884 6463. Beyond that, I gots nothing.
Sthitch Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 *UPDATE* According to the brand manager for Beam Global (who imports Plymouth Gin) the fruit cup is no longer being made. Fruit Cup is now being made again, I just picked up a bottle along a bottle of Cherry Marnier, and some impossible to find Makers Mark Black label.
Lola007 Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 Fruit Cup is now being made again, I just picked up a bottle along a bottle of Cherry Marnier, and some impossible to find Makers Mark Black label. Where did you find the Cherry Marnier? I love it in champagne cocktails. Thanks.

Sthitch Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Where did you find the Cherry Marnier? I love it in champagne cocktails. Thanks. Not in the US
Lola007 Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Not in the US Thanks for the link to the Whiskey Exchange, Sthitch. The last time I saw and bought Cherry Marnier was in Amsterdam. I'm down to just a few drops, so this is helpful.
saf Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 So I want sherry - specifically, Sandeman "Dry Don." Has anyone seen it in the US? Can anyone get it for me?
cheezepowder Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Does anyone around here carry Clear Creek Douglas Fir eau de vie?
Steve W. Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Joe generally carries the full Clear Creek line, so I'd start with him for the Douglas Fir. BTW it goes great with St. Germain Elderflower, Junipero gin, and lemon juice.
Joe Riley Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Does anyone around here carry Clear Creek Douglas Fir eau de vie? Yep, we carry it at Ace.
Joe Riley Posted November 5, 2009 Posted November 5, 2009 At the risk of post-whoring myself, let me just repeat what I said in the Bitters thread, since this product has been mentioned in this thread: Finally, FINALLY, I have Angostura Orange Bitters to sell in the store!Man, how long has this taken, two years? More? It seems like forever. So happy to have them. Wish that they were in a larger bottle, but I'll take what I can get.
ToothbrushFambly Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Does anyone carry Senior brand Curacao?
jparrott Posted November 7, 2009 Posted November 7, 2009 I have seen the orange Senior "Curacao de Curacao" at Ace. Not sure about any other colors.

TMFIII Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 I'm pretty sure I saw a bottle or two at Ace. Hmmmm. . . sensing a theme here . . . Also, if anyone is in Virginia, ABC carries "Captain Applejack" which is Laird's Bottled-in-Bond Apple Brandy relabeled for VA ABC.
brian Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 Does anyone know where I can find the Laird's bonded Applejack? I've seen a few different bottlings of Laird's at Central Liquor in the past year - not sure of their current inventory.
zoramargolis Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 Does anyone know where I can find the Laird's bonded Applejack?I saw it on Wednesday at the MoCo store in Friendship Heights (in the shopping center with the geriatric Giant).

lperry Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 I would like to find small or mini bottles of maraschino and herbsaint. Pernod will work if Herbsaint is not available. I've got cocktail recipes I want to try that call for very small quantities of each, and I don't want to buy a 750 knowing that it will oxidize into blandness before I use it. I've asked at a few places with no luck. Anyone?

lperry Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 I don't pay attention to anise-flavored liqueurs, because I don't like them very much. Maraschino, on the other hand, I love in cocktails. I've never seen maraschino in any size but 750ml, and doubt you'll find smaller bottles anywhere. But is oxidation really a concern? With distilled spirits? I'm told it is by various sources including a rather well-researched thread at the Ministry of Rum. Ed Hamilton suggests using it up within six months of opening, and the rule of thumb was backed up with side-by-side testing of near-empty bottles with newly opened ones. Apparently, quite a bit of complexity will be lost due to oxidation over time. Potential solutions included transferring to smaller bottles to reduce contact with oxygen, using one of those wine air-sucker things, and drinking more. Edited cuz I can't spell.
deangold Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 drinking more. Always a good plan! A gentleman was driving late one night and a cop pulled him over. He had been weaving. The cop asked him if he had been drinking and the man said "no". He was a juggler and he just wanted to make sure he had all his juggling equipment with him and he got distracted. The cop said that if he could juggle, he was probably sober and the cop would let him go. So, the juggler got out of the car and got his equipment, which happened to be torches. In a minute he had the torches lit and he was not only juggling them but catching them under his leg. As this was going on, another man, who had tippled a few too many weaved up and pulled over to see the sight, not realizing there was a cop there. He looked at the show going on road side. After a monute, he shook his head and walked up to the cop. He then said "just put the cuffs on me now. If that's the damned sobriety test, I might as well go to jail as kill myself."

leleboo Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 I am looking for Thomas Jefferson Ale in Nova. The real question is, is it available in Texas?
ktmoomau Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 I actually got a super speedy response from Chris Turner at Hop and Wine Beverage in Sterling! I thought I would post the response in case anyone else was looking for it: To find Thomas Jefferson Ale try Whole Foods Market or Total Wine and More. Also, in Arlington you can try Westover Market. Wooohooo. Or perhaps Waahoooo is in order! I will try Whole Foods in Arlington first and let you know.
SeanMike Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 According to their website it is only available around Philly. I bought plenty of it in Pittsburgh. Try going to the Pennsylvania liquor control board's website - they'll tell you on a store-by-store basis who in PA has it. (Sorry, don't have the link on me - try Google.)

It made me very proud. It was a hilarious article.

jparrott Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 We'll have it. Not sure how much. Not sure when. And not sure if or when it'll be back after the initial 481 cases the importer is getting is sold.
ad.mich Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 I'm getting tired of being taunted by my friends in New Orleans who have access to Abita Strawberry Lager - and I'm hearing conflicting reports that we might not see it at all in DC this year.
lperry Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 I was in New Jersey yesterday and saw Barbancourt Blanc, my favorite white rum. Anyone in the metro area carrying it yet?
ChiantiandFava Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 I know Cork Wine Bar carries a Barbancourt but I think it's one of the reserves. You could always ask who their distributor is and see if they carry the blanc?
lperry Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 ^ The dark rums are everywhere, but the white is elusive.
jparrott Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 ^ The dark rums are everywhere, but the white is elusive. Indeed. Its ludicrously bad marketing notwithstanding, 10 Cane rum has a similar flavor profile (even though it's not charcoal-filtered to clearness).

Bah. Twice as much coin, and I don't get to support Haitian industry. Plus, I think 10 Cane is aged, or maybe blended, no? I love that grassy, fresh cane taste in the Barbancourt. I'm set for a while, but it would be nice to have a reliable local source.

plarkins Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Good afternoon! So, I'm looking for the '07 Glen Manor Hodder Hill. I really enjoy the '08 and would like to try the previous vintage. I've searched online and called some retailers without success. I'm pretty confident no retail location has it in stock anymore, so I'm curious to know if anyone has any spare bottles. I'd be willing to pay a good price for it, especially if its been stored well. I'd offer a trade, but my cellar is young; mostly filled with easily procured local wines. Cheers
ad.mich Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 The November Van Winkle shipment seems to have trickled into parts of Maryland but I haven't heard anything about any of the DC retailers receiving things.
ol_ironstomach Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 So the producers of Armagnac have quietly been commercializing la Blanche Armagnac now that it is no longer forbidden in public. Will it languish in le trou Gascon, or will it find life as an alternative to eau-de-vie, marc, pisco, and other clear distillates? Has anyone encountered it (perhaps the Laubade) in the DC market? An intriguing NYT article from earlier this year.
jparrott Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 The Domaine d'Esperance Armagnac Blanche (imported by the most excellent Nicolas Palazzi) is available in DC through Ledroit Brands. It is excellent. Retail penetration is small so far; best to have your retailer contact Ledroit.
hapatite Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Anyone seen Bitter Truth Apricot Liquer? I've seen the Sloe Gin, but I tried the apricot at Repeal Day recently and it was awesome. Sadly, I live in VA, where ABC rules with an iron fist. I'm also on the lookout for SAGE (by AITA) and this Pine Gin that @merc340 is lusting after... I've seen Luxardo at many places, including Liquor shops in Cleveland Park as well as my lowly local ABC store (Arlington)
SeanMike Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 I got some of the Sage at Ace Beverage, if I remember correctly. Joe could probably help you with the apricot liqueur as well. (As a fellow Arlington-ian, I drive to Ace every weekend.)
hapatite Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 I'll have to start placing my orders through you SeanMike! My boyfriend called Ace Beverage and the person that answered the phone said that he doesn't carry the Apricot Liquer but he carries something "much better". I'll be researching that. How's the sage? I didn't like RHUBY at first (almost empty!), but it really grew on me and the one that I thought would be my favorite (SNAP) is still mostly full.

I didn't like RHUBY at first (almost empty!), but it really grew on me and the one that I thought would be my favorite (SNAP) is still mostly full. Oops. I don't have the Sage, I have the Rhuby (which they had to rename for some reason "Rhubarb Tea" or something like that).
thetrain Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 I'm also on the lookout for SAGE (by AITA) and this Pine Gin that @merc340 is lusting after... I saw three AITA liquors at the ABC store on Fillmore in Arlington last week - Root and Snap, can't remember the third. Anyone see Fernet Branca in VA recently? They used to carry it at the Quincy store but they've stopped. I've seen it in D.C. but its $10 more than what ABC was charging...
SeanMike Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Probably the Rhuby, or Rhubarb, depending on how it's labeled. Fernet got taken off the list at VA ABC - I think it's special order only now, if it's still available at all. I know some bartenders and other enthusiasts have been lobbying to get it back...

My boyfriend called Ace Beverage and the person that answered the phone said that he doesn't carry the Apricot Liquer but he carries something "much better". I'll be researching that. Did you ever find out what the "something better" was? I'm in the market for one and from my reading the Winter & Rothman Orchard Apricot looks like a good option for the price. I called the MD distributor and the closest place that might have it is pretty far, although not impossible to get to. I also need to check with the MC liquor stores, but I'm wondering if anyone has seen it in DC anywhere? While I'm posting, does anyone know how interchangeable citrus and orange vodkas would be in a recipe? When a recipe doesn't specify a specific vodka, but just says citrus vodka, could I use an orange vodka instead? I'm guessing it could make a significant difference in flavor since if I understand correctly the citrus vodkas tend to be more lemon based. Thoughts?

DaRiv18 Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 I say use the orange vodka. If the recipe is a Cosmo, it calls for a orange twist -- I would just use a lemon twist instead. I feel the flavor disparity between orange and lemon vodka is less than between Noilly Prat sweet vermouth and Punt e Mes.

jparrott Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 [Full disclosure, blah, blah, blah] The Rothman & Winter Orchard Apricot is pretty popular amongst our cocktail friends (and our pour-some-in-wheat-beer-or-sparkling-wine home bartender friends). The base of it is the eau-de-vie of the apricot (plus apricot juice, sugar, and water), so it has a lot of fruit intensity. We also dialed back the sugar a bit. Happy to answer other questions about it. [Full disclosure blah blah blah]

The Hersch Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 I've seen this...Montbisou Framboise...listed in a few recipes lately, but am not familiar with it. Â Is this just a raspberry liquor? Â Can I swap Chambord? It's fairly widely available, I think. I know I have had a bottle of it within the last ten years, although I guess that doesn't say all that much. I used it in raspberry sorbet. But yes, it's just a raspberry liqueur, and although I don't remember ever tasting Chambord, I imagine they're roughly interchangeable. Google says they have the Montbisou at Total Wine, if that does you any good. It's cheaper than Chambord.
KeithA Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Last night at a wine tasting event at Oya, I had the excellent yet unusual sparkling pineapple wine, Hula O' Maui from Tedeschi vineyards in Hawaii. It was fruity, yet not cloyingly sweet and very refreshing. I saw that you can order direct from the vineyard, but the shipping costs are rather high from Hawaii to DC. Anyone know of a retail store in DC that sells this wine?Â

Rovers2000 Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 So I've hunted around on winesearcher.com as well as looked at the actual producers website (which didn't have anything around importers) with no luck, so I'm wondering if anyone might know what would be my best place to start to try and find if I can order this locally somewhere: Paxxo Rosso Del Veneto, Stefano Accordini 2010 I had it at Lupa this past weekend while in NYC (see the Help Wanted NYC Thread) - the sommelier brought it out as a replacement and it was truly delicious. He'd mentioned it was an off menu wine that he'd just gotten his hands on. I would REALLY appreciate any help.

I e-mailed Jake Parrot out of the blue to see where I could get Dolin Blanc in Richmond, and he was more than helpful. Â Distributors are in the business of selling their products, so I think they don't mind the occasional e-mail asking where you could find their product. Â A lot of times distributor websites also carry that information or invite you to contact them.

PappyVanWise Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Hey Pras, If the DMV market is anything like it was down here, then the beer geek places sold out the day it came in. Â The grocery stores might still have it sitting around. Â I'd check Harris Teeter, Giant, Safeway, etc...I know it's still around at Kroger in Richmond (which is the same company as HT).
pras Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Yeah, too bad the Maryland grocery stores (for the most part) around here don't carry beer. I hit up this one store tonight, and they had 4-12 packs. I took 2 to the counter and the guy refused to sell them to me because he was going to return them because he was mad he wasn't sent more. I told him I would buy all 4 on the spot and he still refused. Maybe I will hit up the shoppers up the street that sells beer. They usually get good allocations.
pras Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 So in my hunt for Beer Camp, someone had a very good theory regarding the short supply in the area and it makes alot of sense. The Beer Camp festival stops in Philadelphia this weekend. For this reason, they shifted the supply up north to Philly. This person was told that in a week or two the DC area will receive a large shipment. Here's to hoping this theory/intel is correct.
SeanMike Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Arrowine's "Beermonger" (his name on Twitter is TheBeermonger but I can't remember his real name) had a retweet today saying they had some at the Potomac Yards HT.

We can proudly call the multi-faceted Perry Soulos (Beerboy_999) one of our own as well. Don't forget: He also won the championship at the San Francisco National Cheesemonger Invitational.

pras Posted August 10, 2014 Posted August 10, 2014 Good news, I was able to score a beer camp 12-pack in Mt. Airy. A very nice person I work with got it for me! I guess its still around if you hunt it down.
pras Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 Not sure if it is as difficult to come across as it has been in the past, but I was able to get 3-Stars Pandemic Porter at Costco in DC today. Â Also not sure how much a bomber usually goes for, but it was $7.99.
acgator Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 Any DR members have any luck hunting down orange wines in a retail setting? Much as I love grabbing a stool at the Red Hen and savoring a glass I'd really like to take a bottle (or 20) home to relax with. I've tried schneiders, calvert woodley and arrow wine to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Joe Riley Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 After years of phone calls, emails, and other searching, I FINALLY acquired the Maraska Maraschino Liqueur today. http://www.maraskausa.com/individual-products.html#maraschino Been after this since, oh, at least 2008.

You have me interested. I'm a huge fan of the Luxardo - it would definitely make my top 10 list from that other thread if I ever got around to making it. How do the two compare? Unfortunately I never get into DC.
DanCole42 Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 Does anyone know where I can find some Saucony Brewing Company Maple Mistress Pumpkin Ale? To take home? It's good.
