Sthitch
Restaurants and Institutions has released their list of the Top 100 Independent Restaurants based on sales. There are three local restaurants on the list, Old Ebbitt (#6), Phillips Inner Harbor (#48), and surprisingly Mike's American (#73). I am not really sure how independent a Casino restaurant actually is, but there are a ton of them on this list.

Interesting...Old Ebbit comes in at #6 with by far the lowest check average of the top 25. No wonder I can never get a table there.
cajcaj
How does #18 Mon Ami Gabi qualify as independent? There's one right in Bethesda. I thought maybe it was different from the Vegas one, but when I clicked on the link on the list, one of the first things I noticed on their site was "locations". Also, while some of the celeb chef fronted restaurants are not chains per se, I don't know if its fiar to include them.
DPop
The recipe for financial success seems to be opening a restaurant in Vegas, eh? I know I shouldn't be surprised, but having taken my first trip to Vegas almost a decade ago, it is still crazy to see how much things have changed between then and now...... I totally agree, and all three restaurants in the area are part of chains. They might define Independent as being part of a privately held corporation, as opposed to one that is publically traded (i.e. McDonalds).

Yea, I don't see where they give much of a definition of what they consider to be independent other than, "The 100 highest-grossing independent (non-chain) restaurants in the United States ". Maybe it turns on their definition of what they consider a chain.
Waitman
I'm thinking they meant "stand-alone" ie comparing the revenues of a single place rather than of the entire chains. Because, Smith and Wollensky and, of course, Old Ebbitt are all in chains as well.
DanielK
How exactly did they get the sales figures? I assumed most true independent restaurants would be unwilling to share that information for public consumption.
johnb
The annual list of the biggest. Steak and Las Vegas are well represented. Old Ebbitt shows up at #5. Jose Andres Beverly Hills outpost shows up at #46, and Phillips in Ballmer is #52. The remainder around DC are a funky lot. You've got Mike's American (#63), Tower Oaks (#77), Jackson's Mighty Fine Food (#78), and Coastal Flats (#93). Huh?
DonRocks
Here's the 2015 list. I'm not even sure who the chef at Joe's Stone Crab is, but Scott Drewno has been the Chef de Cuisine at what is now the #33 highest-grossing independent restaurant in the nation since its inception in 2007 - that is amazing. mr food
No surprise about Old Ebbitt but the Hamilton at # 20 was. I wonder if that includes ticket sales?
Simul Parikh
list of the top grossing restaurants in the country would indicate otherwise The one that I find fascinating is Bob Chinn's Crab House in Wheeling, IL. They are crushing it. It's a upper north Chicago suburb like 30 miles from Chicago. Go Bob Chinn!

It's a upper north Chicago suburb like 30 miles from Chicago. Go Bob Chinn! Ooooh. been there, quite a few years back. There are a lot of people in that area and its well traveled between the Southeast Wisconsin corridor to Chicago. Great fun. Big meals, lots to drink. Lots of fun. I'd return. (was it great???--I have no idea..but it was fun)
