Folks - I am posting this with permission from Mr. Don Rocks himself. If you like Indian food ... email/pm names of your favorite dishes --- no restuarant names needed, just what you love to eat!

I look forward to hearing from you all.

thanks in advance

(I need these for an article I am working on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.)

Here are my favorite dishes:

"I found an embedded hair, fried right into my samosa!"

"That damned place serves Inglenook jug-wine and nothing else!"

"Their vindaloo left me "in da loo" for the next six hours!"

Paneers,

Rocks.

From our well-worn Bombay Bistro menu these are the most ordered dishes:

Dal Makhani, Lamb Nilgiri Khorma, Goan Fish Curry, Paneer Matar, Oothappam, Masala Dosa, Aloo Gohbi, Onion Kulcha, Paratha, and Gulab Jamun.

(Now my stomach is growling. :P )

* All variations on lamb, except korma (I'm not a creamy spinach fan)

* The aforementioned butter chicken/chicken tikka makhani/chicken tikka masala family

* Anything with paneer, pretty much

* Daal. Looooove daal even though it looks like the dog's dinner

* Garlic naan, so good for sopping up brightly colored sauces

* Samosas - veggie or lamb-filled

* Dosas

* The lentil pancake whose name I am blanking on right now.

* Aloo tikki

I pretty much skip Indian desserts, I have to admit. :P I also don't like bhel puri (sp?).

My typical orders:

Chicken Tikka Masala

Chicken 65

Some sort of mixed tandoori grill

Shrimp Lababdar (I've only seen this on the menu at Banjara in Ashburn)

Rava Masala Dosa

Chaat Papri (but never as good as last year at Passage to India)

Gulab Jamun

Garlic Naan

Onion Kulcha

Raita

So, what buffet am I going to hit for lunch now that I'm hungry.

These are the most memorable Indian dishes that I have had over the years; It is possible that some of these may not be available in the D. C. area:

Coriander infused lamb stewed on the bone

Tandoori shrimp or Tandoori King Prawn or Kesari Jhinga

Kashmiri rice with raisons, cashews, etc.

Dhungar Machli Tikka (Tandoori smoked salmon, flavored with mustard, dill and spices)

Gilafi Dum Biryani (Pastry crusted lamb Biryani-a GREAT dish!)

Pershawari nan (stuffed with almonds, coconuts and raisons)

A personal addiction is the "national dish of England," chicken tikka masala

Real homemade lime pickle.

Tandoori King Prawn Massalla (marinated prawns, bbq'd then served in curry sauce)

I don't remember what it was called, but the lamb curry dish we had at the Indique dinner a few years back still might be my favorite Indian dish I've had.

I've tried recreating it at home, ordering it out when I see something that looks similar, but no luck yet.

Idli, definitely with sambar daal. I adore sambar.

Mulligatawney soup, and Rasam as well for that matter.

Well made utthapam, preferrably with chilis.

Masala Dosa

To prevent this from skewing hopelessly South Indian (FWIW I'm not a southie)

Lamb Vindaloo

Palak Paneer

Aloo Gobi

Agreed with Joe H on Chicken Tikka Masala

Spicy as hell papadams with just the right amount of mango pickle

And to finish, like a good Bengali, rossomalai.

This isn't a specific dish, but... I'm pleased when an Indian restaurant offers at least one thali, and preferably multiple versions like vegetarian, seafood, and/or spicy. It's like having a personal buffet without the sneeze guard.

Mango lassis are mandatory, especially if the vindaloo has the proper heat level.

Favorite Dish....hhhmmmm....

Yes. As in, when the waitperson asks what you'd like, just hand the menu back, smile, and say "Yes, thank you, they would be lovely. I'm gonna need a few to-go boxes, tho..."

Incidentally, big fan of Minerva in Fairfax.

Does anybody have a good recipe for butter chicken/chicken makhani? I've been trying for a long time to get it right, but mine is not quite there - always missing that full, round flavor that restaurants manage (and my sister-in-law's next door neighbor) - mine tends to be somewhat sharp and attenuated. Please, help me, you have no idea how vital this information is. My wife will continue to stay married to me FOREVER if I can manage to master butter chicken.

Seriously, though, I love deeply:

Palak Paneer

Aloo Gobi

Naan - I mean, really good, really fresh naan, still scorching hot

Lamb Rogan Josh

Biryani, any of the ones I've tried

Dal

Tikka Masala, not really authentic I know, but really tasty

Butter Chicken/chicken makhani - again, not real authentic, but I'll gorge on the stuff

Samosas, preferably hot, slightly greasy, and eaten while walking - a habit picked up as a student in London

Beer

That's all that comes to mind, but I KNOW there are others too numerous to list. I can think of only a couple of indian dishes I've tried that I DON'T like.

the peshawari nan is the one thing that my wife misses the most from england. There is a place in the Digbeth area of birmingham that does an exceptional version involving some form of syrup.

Chicken Dopiaza

Chana Masala

Mutter Panneer

Butter Chicken

Onion Bhajee
