  1. My parents, 4 year old and I went to the van Ness location. the three dishes for $60 is a steal especially for my family since we basically eat & order family style wherever we go and are just constantly eating off of each other's plates anyway.

    We ordered

    - stracciatella cheese (which tastes like the inside of the burrata) with roasted tomatoes and artichokes

    - Bolognese special

    - A'matriciana

    - gnocchi with porcinis

    - tiramisu + gelato

Waitress accidentally wrote down "sp" for special and then served pasta aglio oilio (which was just okay). She fixed it and brought out the Bolognese.

Restaurant seems very family-friendly. I noticed a lot of families there. we brought our own coloring sheets and crayons but the waitress print it out more for us. The children's menu does seem pretty expensive though, the entrees are $14 which is the same price as some of the adult entrees seems fairly high for me. My daughter just ended up eating what we were eating.

  2. They have changed their menu significantly from when they opened I think to separate the two spaces, I have been to both several times since I live in the area. TTT is very loud and more casual.

Buena Vida is more of an upscale tapas type of place. I think they have this all-you-can-eat deal for $35 and all you can eat and drink for $50, but the catch is the entire table has to order the all-you-can-eat option. I went with a large group and we were told that we had to do the all-you-can-eat option which was not something my group wanted to do, and they were flexible about doing things ala carte and even gave us crab nachos and tequila on the house.

I went to Buena vida another time and had very incompetent service and the bathroom was backed up. We poliltely complained and they ended up comping our whole meal.

I find commerce, cloaked in patriotism and military pride, to be stomach turning. It is the "mission" of Mission Barebecue.

I find the playing of the National Anthem at noon to be absurd. I love  our country. I love barbecue. This place gives me the creeps and is not for me.

Glad I'm not the only person who feels a bit weirded out by that. It seems so conspicuously pious.

The bbq is pretty good though. I'm willing to look the other way on it because at least the food is good.

Tacos, Tortas & Tequila (TTT), and companion restaurant Buena Vida, will open this Friday, May 4, in the former 8407 space in Downtown Silver Spring:

I went here with my family. We ate at Buena Vida. The complimentary chips and salsa were excellent (tomatillo, some kind of smoked red salsa and picked veggies) were excellent. We had elote off the cob, a bunch of tacos and ceviche. Even the beans and rice which we ordered for the kids was great. My favorite tacos were the lengua and the duck carnitas. Service was okay, not the most attentive server.

  5. I took my husband and sister there and I was so unimpressed by the service. We had a reservation and had a 20 minute wait for a table. We were directed to the bar  and the bartender ignored us. Waitress was ignoring is for a while. When I asked her questions she gave me attitude and all but  rolled her eyes. The people at a neighborhoring table was trying desperately to flag her over so they could get the check and we finally helped get the hostess to give them the check.

The Silver Spring location is permanently closed, per a sign on the door (and Yelp confirms). I wonder how much of it is competition from a spot like AG Kitchen (which isn't Tex-Mex, but covers some of the same territory as broad Latino fusion food) and how much is just the decline of the chain's quality since it opened.

Will be interesting to see what slots into place there. It was one of the original spots in the revitalization of Downtown Silver Spring, and when Macaroni Grille similarly closed in 2014, Peterson went for an independent restaurant (AG Kitchen) rather than a chain to slot in next to the Red Lobster and Eggspectation that had been there since the beginning, and two of their most recent openings in the smaller, fast casual spots were also local - Cava Grill and Gusto Italian Grill (the other is a Shop House). Their website still shows Austin Grill but I assume that will change shortly - and the spot is 6,008 SF, which is the fourth largest restaurant in that DTSS complex they own, behind AG Kitchen, Copper Canyon Grill, and Red Lobster, and at least marginally larger than Eggspectation and Masa Hibachi.

You know I live in the downtown silver spring area and I just didn't even remember that it existed. Like I noticed a new restaurant was moving in and I just for the life of me could not think of which restaurateur had gone out of business. Judging by the reviews I wasn't missing much.

  7. I went here last night. Definitely hipster/upscale Korean.

They specialize in customizable bowls of bibimbap. Also serve Ssam but my spicy pork belly was dried out and not fun to eat whike the dolsot (hot stone bowl) bibimbap was delicious.  We also had korean fried wings, scallion pancakes (pajeon) and mandu.

They also serve great soju cocktails and house infused soju. They also have this amazing desert with house fried potato chips, honey butterscotch sauce and ice cream.

  8. I took my toddler there last night for an impromptu steakfest and the wait staff was so absolutely nice to her. I felt a bit self-conscious being the "the table with the baby" but they were made us feel at ease and we had a great time. (took a few walks up and down Georgia avenue when someone got wiggly!) Food at the Classics is still great, not much to report other than that I could eat my weight in creamed spinach and hanger steak if given the chance. Also the crab royale is amazing.

  9. This place is in Bailey's Crossroads near the Peking gourmet restaurant. It had a soft opening this week with an official opening this weekend.

The menu is still a work in progress I spoke with the owner and his intention was to have both traditional Mexican tacos and Korean Fusion tacos. The corn tortillas in the tacos are handmade and you can watch the cooks making them. Yum!

The only Korean taco on the menu was bulgogi, it was good but not amazing. Of the Mexican tacos my favorite was the lengua the tongue was cooked perfectly.

  10. I went to the Cleveland Park location earlier this week. Service was a bit wonky. We were seated in the basement where we had one waiter who was also the bartender. Since there was just one waiter working the entire room he had the food runners bringing out all the food and that let to some weird miscommunication and wrong food being delivered to us (we ordered thai mussels and got the old bay ones twice. Lol.) The St Arnold Mussels ( house beer sauce, caramelized shallot, garlic, thyme and duck fat) are definitely my favorite. Thai ones are also good (once we finally got them)

I wish their Belgian waffle had more of a crispy exterior with a soft interior but other than that it was fine.

I'd definitely rank this place behind Lyon Hall and Grandville Moore but it's good
