  1. Any more reports from Farrah Olivia??

i just spoke to a friend who went earlier in the week and they said the same thing as youngfood: left underwhelmed, unnecessary upcharges, no standouts worth remembering... they said that they would not go back for the full price menu as it would not be worth it.

they also mentioned that the upcharging seemed more by principal rather than purpose; the upcharges were so small, a couple bucks, that you wondered why they even bothered.

i'm really bummed as this was what i was really looking forward to for thursday but now i'm not so sure.

  2. Went to Politics and Prose last night. The chef was excellent, and so very enjoyable to watch. He clearly loves his job!!

One question, though as dinner at Comet's made us a tad bit late (surprise! but i can't complain as the food was divine) what were his comments regarding the new restaurant? I think we came in just after he discussed it--all I heard was that the cusine will be american with a touch of french influence.

  3. Do you have any favorites? I have enjoyed savory pomegrate preparations in restaurants (versus desserts), but have never tried making them at home.

This caught my eye. I'm not sure I how I feel about this take on guacamole including pomegranate seeds.

i'd be interested in this too. i love poms but have never used them for anything except sprinkling over a salad. the guacamole above looks very interesting...and i'm not usually a fan of it.

  4. That sounds entertaining and conveniently located/timed. Anyone going?

that's my big night out this weekend! :P a girlfriend and i are planning a trip to Comet and then to P&P for the event.

that's so much for all the responses, this really helps a lot. and yes, i shouldn't have tried to limit it to restauranteurs; i'm interested in local authors as well.

    cheers,

    holly

  5. i am so bummed, this was the first year we had the funds to be able to go to a bunch but now i have to cancel them ALL! we just signed a new apartment lease (which i'm thrilled about) so our first month's rent and security deposit is due now (a major financial hit). :) so not only can't we do a bunch, for the first time in four years, we can't go to any!!

i'm reluctantly giving up my reservations for 2 people as follows:

Aug 16, Notti Bianche, 6pm (however it is secured on my credit card so i may have to just cancel)

    Aug. 17, Rasika, 6:15

Aug. 18, Rasika, 6:15 (we weren't sure which day we could go)

Aug. 20, Colvin Run Tavern, 6:00

and, how does this usually work, you just go under my name or do i transfer through open table somehow?? PM me if interested.

  6. Has there been a topic posted to discuss? if so, i couldn't find it and apologize, but if not, here we go!!!

I'd love some recommendations. being a DCer, I have to admit I am rarely in this area and am totally new to the dining experience. i was thinking Grapeseed but not sure if I should change to Rock Creek.

  7. we headed to acadiana last night, as well. i won't go into too many specifics as it has already been covered but here are a few thoughts.

i started with the shrimp remoulade and my husband, the oyster soup. mine was quite generous and due to such a heavy sauce, i was not able to eat it all. i was on the fence about it--it was good for the first few bites but then became too much. the hubby loved his soup.

i had the tuna entree, he had the redfish. my tuna was cooked to perfection, but the cheddar "spoon" was too large a helping that, again, i could not finish my plate (priority was given to the tuna and i did eat all of it). once again, i think because the dish was so rich and heavy, i couldn't eat all of it. the hubby had the redfish and loved it. at first i was surprised he ordered it since it is such an unassuming dish but he thought, since you hardly see it on menus he'd give it a try.

for dessert, i chose the rootbeer float and he chose the bread pudding. both were delicious and a nice end to the meal.

i have to say, though, that all the dishes semed way too heavy and rich for a three course meal. to type that surprises the hell out of me since i am from the south and frequently vacationed in NOLA. we really had a nice experience overall (except when one of the hostesses came and reached under my arm while i was raising the wine to my mouth to grab the small RW menu--i was shocked not only from the invasion but that also because not an "excuse me" was uttered). the server was fantastic. if we do, and i'm sure we will, go back, i will definitely not have a three course meal--it was just too much for me. i couldn't even eat the fudge at the end... :)

  8. if anyone goes to Colvin Run Tavern this week i'd love to hear about their menu. i called over the weekend but the hostess didn't seem at all keen on elaborating on the RW menu. she only told me that there would be six choices and as i know how irritable this promotion can be for the employees, i did not want to push for more information.
