One more thing: my cousin asked about Firefly (I assume someone recommended it to her). I haven't been since the DR dinner many, many years ago. Is it still good?
-
I'll send them both ideas and see what they say. My parents are coming from Columbia by car, though, and sometimes have trouble navigating the city. They'd likely be going around the earliest seating of the night, which might help.

Thanks, Don - that hadn't crossed my mind, but it makes sense (and would certainly be easier to get into than, say, Le Diplomate!).

Hello friends,
My cousin will be in town from Florida this weekend with her husband and 2 kids (tween-ish). If I recall, she's not big on seafood, and she's suggested American or Italian to suit the kids' palates. Her husband is a big steak-and-potatoes kind of guy.
They're staying around 15th and Mass. We already have plans to take them to Jack Rose on Friday (at her husband's request), but my parents are looking for a relatively quiet and accessible place (easy parking?) for Saturday.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Speaking for myself - maniacal toddler with no off switch. Not that I posted often, but I had probably read every word written until 7/15/08. I miss it. Hopefully you all will still be here in 16 1/2 years.

Say hi to Jason, who's making the best margaritas in the city right now.
Click here for a write-up of Jason at New Heights.
Jason is a close friend of ours. Glad to see he's getting some well-deserved recognition. He's mad talented.

Tryst sells their House Blend (made from Counter Culture beans). Open City might, too - not positive.

Aw...Thanks Hillvalley! While we are on the topic of babies, congrats to Buckinghamilton and Diner Boy on the birth of Diner Baby last week! If his pictures are any sign, this is going to be one adorable little boy (not to mention he'll never have to wait on line at The Diner to get fed ) -
Constantine Stavropoulos' new venture across from Cafe St. Ex: click.
Full disclosure: I am married to the GM of the Diner. We're all really excited about this project! If you are too (and live in Dupont Circle/ANC 2B), we'd love to have your support at tonight's meeting.

Just out of curiosity, what makes people want to have their burgers cooked a bit longer than others? Is this a safety issue or a flavor/texture issue?
For me it's a temporary safety issue- I'm 39 weeks pregnant. Told hubby to order my burger (grilled, cave-aged Amish cheddar, and bacon) medium well and secretly hoped for slightly closer to medium. My burger (announced as "well done" by the server) was just shy of medium well and PERFECT- juicy and delicious and just how I'd wanted it. I am in love with this place. With the corn, watermelon, and pitcher of root beer I was in summertime heaven.

i am such a slow learner that we came this close to having this happen to us last night, and i never even thought of calling ahead of time. instead, we ended up at hank's oyster bar, which was having a somewhat off night. i like catfish, but not their sauce, which was heavy and a bit overwhelming. our server had a trainee tagging along and promised twice the service, which actually amounted to less than half. (this has happened to me a few times before. when a server shows up with a trainee, it is usually a bad sign.) next time i'm going back to colorado kitchen, and if it's closed we will probably go to cork or bar pilar, which is an especially good place to eat these days if you are looking for something from the farmers market because you missed it because you overslept.
Ah- Cork and Bar Pilar- good ideas! We were worried that by that point (6-ish by the time we got anywhere else) we'd have a wait, given that it was Father's Day, but we had no trouble finding a table at Red Rocks and enjoyed our meal.
-
Unfortunately, this method did not work for me, as I called on Sunday afternoon and got a message confirming their Sunday hours (5 - 9 pm). My Dad came up from Columbia for our Father's Day dinner at CK, only to find the "Closed" sign on the door at 5:45. Gillian- we love you and your restaurant, but a simple request: please leave a message on your answering machine when you will be closed during normal hours.some words of advice from an extremely slow learner: if you want to eat here on sunday night, call first unless you don't mind the closed sign. -
Not just within walking distance, but crawling distance are Argia's (Italian) and Clare and Don's Beach Shack (seafood). Of those two my choice would be Argia's.
Still well within walking distance are Ireland's Four P's, Pilin (Thai), Maneki Neko (Japanese), a pho joint (Pho 88, I think).
Have fun in FC!
Thanks Twinsdaddy! Argia's (or possibly Pilin) sounds just what I was looking for. Then again, vegetarian's husband loves all things Irish...

Sorry if there's already a thread on this- I couldn't find one. Any suggestions for casual, inexpensive dining near the State Theater? Within walking distance would be perfect, but not absolutely necessary. One in our group is a vegetarian, so I'd rather not take her to Elevation Burger. Otherwise, we eat just about anything (well, except sushi- I'm pregnant).
Thanks!! -
One Friday night in Adams Morgan, as I was opening the door to a cab and about to step in, it was SLAMMED from behind (thank God my foot wasn't yet inside the door) by a valet driver moments after some poor guy a few bars/restaurants down left him with the keys to his car. Much damage was done, the young driver looked terrified, and I was thankful to still have my limbs.

As does Biagio on 18th St. (Adams Morgan/Dupont). Made a great Christmas gift for the adventurous.

(I have also tried to get delivery from Thai X-ing on several occasions, which would be excellent, but I have thus far been unsuccessful. Each time I have tried to order, I am told that there is no delivery that night. This makes sense because it is such a tiny little operation, but it is a bit of an annoying tease. I haven't tried in several months though, so if anyone is actually getting delivery from there, I would love to know so that I can try again.)
Last time I stopped in for takeout, I asked about this, and I'm pretty sure they said they would deliver on Friday or Saturday evenings (not positive about this though, as it was a couple months ago and my memory is a bit hazy).

Sorry, dude- check out post #46.How about a pho/BBQ fusion joint called Pho Q? -
Had an incredible birthday dinner here on Saturday!
OK, I'm firmly in the camp who thinks the gougeres are out of this world- whoever thinks they're "just ok" must be smoking crack. Light, airy, cheesy, completely addictive, they were a real highlight of the evening.
The onion tart was a winner, also- much lighter and thinner than I was expecting, these crispy wedges went down easy. Very tasty.
For mains, Mr. Hamilton ordered the 72 hr. shortrib, and I the lobster burger. The tastes I had of his shortrib made my eyes roll back in my head. Sooo good- very tender and flavorful, it melted in my mouth. Loved the mashed potatoes, too.
I'd been dreaming about the lobster burger since enjoying it at the lounge at Citronelle about a year ago, so maybe my expectations were too high, but I was (very slightly) disappointed, as this version seemed more like a firm seafood mousse than the chunks of lobster tail I seem to recall. Still, it was great, but I was wishing I'd ordered the shortrib. Or the hanger steak. Or the tuna burger (which I also remember loving at Citronelle's lounge). Actually, all the plates passing by looked fantastic. Just means I need to get back ASAP. Oh- also had the mac n' cheese, which I loved, but was too full to make much of a dent in. I'm a fan of the rich, wet mac n' cheeses, so I'd order this again. Drunk, full, and happy, we skipped dessert and headed home, but not before checking out the action in the kitchen from the window to the rest rooms. I could have stood there watching all night- what a show.
Also great to meet some fellow Rockweilers!
(and pretty sure we saw M. Richard himself dining with a friend!)
Oh- and our server was fantastic- friendly, attentive without being overbearing, and our meal was well-timed. A great evening.

Our reservation is for 8, though I wouldn't be terribly surprised if we're still waiting for our table at the bar at 8:30. I'll PM you with our descriptions.OK- what time are folks going? We are there at 8:30- Would just love to say hi. -
As are we! To celebrate my second year turning 30.We're there as well on SaturdayAnyone know if the fried chicken is still served with a mustard sauce?

Dino & Uptown.
Georgetown stroll & dinner outside at Citronelle lounge.
Cheap daytime date- the zoo and slices at Vace.
Picnic under the full-bloom Cherry Blossoms at the tidal basin, followed by a stroll around the monuments (this works day or evening).
Dancing at Madam's Organ followed by Diner cheesesteaks.

When searching for the perfect spot for my company's holiday party for 60, I landed on Circle Bistro- you could either rent the whole restaurant (and adjoining bar/lounge area for cocktails) or their private room, which I recall being a bit more spacious (and you could still rent the bar/lounge area for cocktails). The food there is fabulous, the staff is a dream to work with, the size is perfect, it's in a good location, and it offers valet parking. I remember the price being much more reasonable than any other option I'd explored (Oval Room, Charlie Palmer, etc.) Unfortunately, our entire holiday party ended up being canceled this year, but I'd definitely recommend CB.
Good luck, and congratulations!
