Had dinner at Mia's last Thursday and was quite impressed. I thought it was better than it had been in years-- I used to go frequently and then other pizza places beckoned, notably Pupatella (we make the trek regularly from Chevy Chase to Arlington just to go there.) I did not know about the change in ownership until today, and I was surprised to hear that Melissa Ballinger was no longer in charge. It seems unusual for a restaurant to drastically improve after a big change, mostly it's the other way around.
Anyway we had 4 pizzas: Mia's, Genovese, Jorge's Inferno, and Exotic mushroom. The topping were fresh and flavorful, and the crust was definitely in a league with the top pizza in the DMV. Go figure.

Even as a vegetarian, I love KP. My husband gets the kubideh, and I get the veggie plate. If I had one wish for Kabob Palace, it would be for a Veg of the Day on weekends.

I love that place too. We come all the way from Chevy Chase to go there (although TBH usually we combine it with a trip to the Dairy Godmother. You know, since we've already come that far...)

I'm curious if anyone besides me has an uneasy feeling each time they make the "walk of shame" across Wilson Blvd. after parking in the Safeway lot - I've learned to park close to Safeway so I can co-mingle with the cars there.
Ha, we take the opposite tactic-- parking at the far other end by the dumpsters because we assume no one could possibly care about those spaces. Also sometimes we go in and buy a half gallon of milk

Where did I dine? I think this one is going to need a clue.
The clue is, I liked the food here a lot more than Tom Sietsema did.

Any chance Mr. Landrum might consider adding a veggie burger to the menu? There have been any number of times when our group of friends have wanted to go, but haven't been able to since I'm a vegetarian. I know people always say "why would a vegetarian want to go to a hamburger (or steak) restaurant", and the reason is simple-- if they're with someone who wants to go have a burger!

Beginning tonight, the grilled portobello plate is now available again (but still not on the printed menu).
Thanks for the feedback.
Oh my gosh, this is such GREAT news. I too was upset, but didn't get around to posting about here yet. Thank you, thank you!. Just in case you have any doubt about your decision, here is the note that my husband had written on Nov. 9:
I've been a big fan of Ray's the Steaks for some time, in large part due the presence on the menu of precisely one tasty entree (the grilled portobellos) for my vegetarian wife. Last evening we ventured to Ray's for a special dinner to find that the dish no longer listed. We asked our waiter who explained it had been removed due to slow sales. To his credit he offered to see what the kitchen could accommodate. Predictably it was the "vegetarian nuisance special" plus the usual Ray's spinach and potatoes.Despite looking forward to this particular meal for about 2 months (celebrating a huge did-it-ourselves remodeling project completion)...we headed back down Wilson Blvd. to Guajillo.
Being both a confirmed omnivore and the partner of a vegetarian for the better part of 15 years I can see both sides of this issue, but the truth is that if she can't eat, then I can't eat.
It's especially unfortunate as we've really enjoyed the impact Mark Slater has had on the wine program and looked forward to experiencing some great wines. I'll really miss that hanger steak.
Hanger steak and mushrooms, here we come!

SO sad. My husband and I had a long-standing tradition of hopping in our little vintage convertible in the heat of summer and driving all the way from Chevy Chase MD to the Dreamery/DG (especially on Mozambique day) and then stopping at Gravelly Point on the way home to watch planes land. Those will forever be happy memories.
