  1. Heading to Charleston in early April for my brother's wedding.  Getting in two days early to explore with a reservation one night at Husk.  Any must try's for the second night?

In terms of exploring the city, I plan on doing Fort Sumter by boat and Magnolia Plantation and Gardens.  Any other recs?

  2. I recently relocated to South Florida (Boca Raton to be more specific).  Haven't had too much time to check out the restaurant scene but early assessment is that the pizza, Italian, and seafood are above par, and for anything else don't even bother (you'd think with this many Jews we could find some decent Chinese food!).

I read about this new Kosher spot called Rami's Pita & Grill in Hollywood, FL (1/2 a mile west of 95 on Stirling).  On Monday's and Wednesday's they do Lamb Shawarma as a special.  First place I can seriously recommend.  Right off the spit, fresh hummus, tahini, and Israeli salad.

  3. Had a longer write-up but screwed up the pictures which caused the post to delete.

Just got back from Paris...incredible city just tough in 100 degree heat (hottest three days since 2003).  Most restaurants don't have AC so keep an open mind.  Lunches were quick and on the go.  Definitely try Cojean (www.cojean.fr), a local chain there that's sort of like a Pret a Manger with healthier, fresher, more unique options.  Two dinner highlights were Ellsworth and Bistro Paul Bert.  Ellsworth is a four month old restaurant in the Palais-Royal area, a close walk from the Louvre.  The chef is Canadian and it had a new-American, Rose's Luxury type vibe.  Highlights were the broccoli, squash blossoms, and bone marrow.  Bistro Paul Bert would be my neighborhood bistro if I lived in Paris.  They take reservations by phone only.  Anthony Bourdain did a feature here on a No Reservations episode featuring their steak frites (which are legit).  Had a chilean sea bass ceviche and steak au poivre.  Glasses of Bordeaux are 5 Euros!  Ended the trip at Laduree...don't skip the Kouign Amann.

  4. Had dinner here Friday night (former Manzanilla space).  Fantastic new addition to the Flatiron area.  Collab from Justin Smilie (Il Buco, Barbuto) and Stephen Starr.  The space and menu feels like ABC Kitchen with more of an Italian influence.  Highlights for the apps were the Japanese Mackerel (celeriac, brussels sprouts, pistachio, benton's ham + tangerine) and the Beef Tartare (black trumpet mushroom, puffed farro, anchovy + egg yolk).  Don't miss the Short Rib for Two (loved the shaved horseradish) and Estrella pasta with chicken liver for entrees.  Service was fantastic and Mr. Starr himself was actively working the room.

  5. Best bets in that area are Sushi of Gari (which I've heard has slipped in quality recently), Sushi Seki (expensive), or Tanoshi, which is at 73rd and York.  Omakase there is $50 and well worth the value.

I'm headed to Kura in the East Village tonight which is another hidden gem if you're willing to make the trek down (I promise I'll post about it Don!).

  6. To date my favorite burger in NYC is Minetta Tavern's Black Label Burger, although the $28 price tag doesn't allow me to splurge too often.  Last weekend while on the Upper East Side my girlfriend suggested we try J.G. Melon.  It was around 2:30pm so we only had to wait five minutes.  I won't go in to much detail about the history of the place, although it probably deserves a spot in the Oldest Establishments thread.

The burger was a close second to Minetta.  Nothing fancy about it; great char on the outside, a juicy medium rare on the inside, melted cheddar, a few pickles/onions, all for $11 (see pic below).

  7. Hi All,

So I'm planning to propose to my girlfriend in early March.  I want to make dinner reservations for our families the night of the engagement for a party of 11.  I don't think a private room is necessary, just somewhere relatively quiet in Union Square, Flatiron, or Midtown.  Nothing too fancy, I was thinking something along the lines of Crispo at 14th and 7th.  I feel like Italian always works well or American.

    Any and all suggestions welcomed!

  8. Hey Guys,

I'm celebrating an anniversary tonight.  I have reservations at L'Apicio, Lafayette, and Jewel Bako currently (leaning toward L'Apicio or Jewel).  Looking to spend in the range of $200 all in.  Any other suggestions for a romantic/quiet place below 30th St?

    Thanks!

  9. I'm a huge advocate of the DC dining scene (although currently live in NYC). I never dined at Suna but thinking more big picture as opposed to Post review-like factors. Suna charged $48 for 4 courses and $76 for 8 (don't quote me on that). That's expensive IMHO. Friends of mine who ate there said they left hungry after the 4 course meal. The restaurant is above a comfort food restaurant that charges $20 for a bowl of pasta. I understand trying to push the envelope, but I don't think this was the right neighborhood for this restaurant. Capitol Hill is a late 20s, early 30s neighborhoody crowd. I know the restaurant was trying to be a little more hipster and this wouldn't have worked on H Street either. A restaurant like Suna needs to be downtown where they can charge more for both 4 and 8 course meals and get the clientele who are willing to pay it. The restaurant never had more then 4 tables at a time most days. Just a bad business decision.

  10. We are headed to Columbia (Maryland) to meet some friends on Friday evening and would love some guidance as to a good sushi restaurant. Sushi Sono? Sushi King? Hanamura? Something I'm missing? Thanks!

Sushi Sono by a long shot. Best sushi from DC to Baltimore. If the sushi nuggets and the tuna 3 ways are specials get them.

  11. @jasonc - We arent really inventing the wheel here, and there is always going to be competition, but based on the number of quality partnerships we've been able to establish and success thus far we have been able to stick out. I hadn't heard of Dining Date Night but did notice that they launched in June of 2011 whereas our company launched in May 2010. Thanks for pointing it out!
