Old Hickory Steakhouse Kicks Off 2009 Wine Series

With Stag’s Leap Wine Dinner on March 18

Rare “Cask 23” Cabernet to be paired with exquisite food and Artisanal cheeses

Gaylord National Resort is proud to kick off it’s 2009 Wine Series with the Stag’s Leap Wine Dinner at Old Hickory Steakhouse on March 18 at 7 p.m.

Executive Chef Wolfgang Birk and Maitre d’Fromage Carolyn Stromberg will welcome Jeff McBride, Vice President and General Manager of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars to create this exclusive culinary experience. Located in Napa Valley, California, Stag’s Leap is one of the most celebrated and historic wine estates in North America.

Lush wines, artisanal cheeses and superb cuisine – the holy trinity of epicurean appreciation – will marry in perfect harmony. Guests will discover a new world of Stag’s Leap vintage, modern and unique wines during this exclusive event – including Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the country's preeminent and rare red wines. The Stag’s Leap selections will be expertly paired with a six-course dinner. Menu highlights include:

• Pan Seared Diver Scallop in the shell with Artichoke Mousseline, Yuzu Vinaigrette

Stag’s Leap Karia Chardonnay, Napa, 2006

• Slow Braised Boneless Kobe Beef Short Rib with Root Vegetable Gratin, Cabernet Reduction

About Jeff McBride

Winemaker by trade, writer and teacher by hobby, philosopher by heart, Jeff McBride possesses a combination of experiences and skills that serve him well as Vice President, General Manager of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, one of the most celebrated and historic winery estates in America. In 2008, McBride was elected to the Board of the Napa Valley Vintners, where his leadership skills benefit the broader Napa Valley community.

About Executive Chef Wolfgang Birk

Overseeing the culinary staff of Old Hickory Steakhouse, Birk has culled his twenty years of experience working in the best kitchens of Spain, Italy, Germany and North America. Most recently, he served as executive chef of Miami’s famous five-star, five-diamond Casa Casuarina (formerly known as the Versace Mansion). Birk has also worked alongside many of the world's top chefs and taught at New York's illustrious New School. He has been honored with a certificate of appreciation from the James Beard Foundation in 1998 and 2004; a best chef nomination in Food and Wine magazine in 2001, 2002, and 2003; and honorable mentions in the New York Times, New York Daily News and many international food magazines.

About Maitre d’Fromage Carolyn Stromberg

Stromberg brings to Old Hickory Steakhouse more than five years of professional experience working with fine cheeses. As the restaurant’s artisanal cheese expert, she oversees the procurement, care-taking and presentation of more than two dozen artisanal cheeses. Stromberg is currently the only individual to hold the esteemed title of “Maitre d’Fromage” in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area. Prior to joining Gaylord, she ran wholesale operations for Cheesetique, an award-winning Del Ray, Virginia cheese shop. She also previously worked for famed California-based, cheese-maker Cowgirl Creamery at the company’s Washington D.C. store.
