Palena's pickle prowess continues to impress. My burger was accompanied by a lightly pickled piece of sweet corn last night. With just the right balance of sweet and vinegar it was the perfect way to say goodbye to the summer.

have you tried Breadline's baguette? It's really good and it doesnt hurt to have more options, since there seems to be a lack of quality bread around here.
There's definitely a lack of quality bread around here. I think Breadline is OK, but they can be a little inconsistent. I also like Bonaparte, which I get at the Dupont or Foggy Bottom farmer's markets. However, I found LPQ to be much better than either one of these.

Hands down, they have the best baguette in DC. I picked one up on Sunday. It wasn't perfect but it's the only baguette in the area that approaches the ideal of crusty exterior and light fluffy interior. Good flavor as well. I was pretty stoked to finally get a good baguette in this town, but kind of bummed that I have to go to Georgetown to get it.

Entree suggestions?
I enjoyed the Black Cod.

Paradiso is definately better than 2 Amys, and so much more accessible, less kids, better crowd, too.
Just curious, what about the pizza at Paradiso do you prefer to 2 Amy's?
-
I've browsed the menu, but I haven't eaten there. It seems to be Spanish/South American. It's moderately priced and has been crowded every time I've walked past.

My friend ordered one of the meatball platters, and he gave me a taste of it. It made me really happy even though it was a little cold. I know where I'm eating next week.
I actually prefer the meatballs with white wine sauce that he does as a special on Wednesdays. I'm trying to give them up though, as I'm attempting to limit my caloric binging to the weekends.

Where is the Greek Deli?
19th, between L and M, right next to Smith and Wollensky.

I see the final 4 (remember last season it was 4, not 3) are likely to be Hung, Howie (yes Howie, he's got talent, and entertainment value), and then two of either Dale, CJ or Brian (in that order most likely). I think Sara and Casey will be out in short order.
Overall I agree that it'll likely be Hung since I think he's clearly the most talented. But then again, I don't think the most talented contestant won last year....
It's Hung's to lose.

Nothing does the trick like a pizza from Vace and a beer from my fridge.

Is 2 Amy's slipping? At lunch this weekend my soft shell sandwich was great, but our pie was a little undercooked. It was not so bad that you would send it back, but not up to the standard that I've come to expect from them. Has anyone else noticed this? Hopefully it was just one off pie and not part of a pattern.

I don't care about the website. I wish they were still using OpenTable....
I don't care about either. I wish they had more seating.

I will normally order if we intend on sharing a couple dishes and we've talked about it. Or sometimes, I'll order her a glass of wine if she can't decide which one she wants. But, as a rule I don't normally order for my better half or for anyone else. It just seems weird to be talking about someone in the 3rd person when they are sitting right there. We were out recently and the waiter didn't even look at her, expecting me to order everything. That's kind of rude in my mind, but others may disagree. The other funny thing that I've noticed is that often when we order a light dish and a heavy dish, i.e. salad and a burger, they will mix it up and assume she ordered the lighter dish.

Last night I had Chilled Cucumber and Almond Soup: pureed cucumber and almond with crab meat, thinly sliced cucumber, baby greens and pickled cherries. I am not clever enough to accurately describe how good this was, so I'll just say Best_Soup_Ever.

Whole Foods does pay their employees better, and it shows. The employees at the DC stores I frequent have better attitudes/customer service skills than any other similarly situated business in the area. The checkers at Giant on 9th don't seem to care whether I live or die, let alone whether I am able pay for my purchase in a timely fashion. Ditto, any CVS in DC.
My real issue with WF isn't price, it's quality. (Although a little part of me dies every time I pay a dollar for a lemon.) They consistently fail to live up to to their mission statement/marketing hype and that's why I hate them. And yes I do shop at WF nearly every week.
-
Mackey's fear is IMO correct--I predict that WF will not survive with its present business model much longer--when the other guys really start selling this stuff at reasonable prices, its customer base will evaporate.
Or the could just, you know, lower their prices.

Another venture from David Winer, who owns Logan Tavern and Merkado Kitchen, is supposed to open this week in Columbia Heights. It is being described as an "industrial-chic American" restaurant with an outdoor patio. No idea on the menu.
It's open. Didn't look too exciting though.

So my wife and I were thinking about doing the all-inclusive thing - I hate the stress of paying for food on vacation. Any recommendations? I'd like to find the one with the best food offerings of course
Many of these places get their food shipped down from Miami. The cooks may be local, but the raw materials are not. The food is also dumbed down for tourists. Once upon a time I lived in Jamaica and I love Caribbean food. I've spent some time at a well known all-inclusive and the food wasn't bad. However, If it were me I'd stay away from the big resorts and seek out some local food.

My weekend in NYC: Resto (Murray Hill), Bouley, Inoteca (Lower East Side)
Resto is a Belgian place that recently got 2 stars from the NYT. We ate there late on Friday night and at 3/4 full this place was loud (hardwood floors and tin ceilings). Bitter Ballen (deep fried veal meatball/fritter) and lamb ribs were quite good. Housemade sausage were just ok, and frites were kind of subpar. The lamb ribs were the fattiest thing I've ever eaten--in a good way. Beers were outstanding, but for some reason most of the patrons were drinking wine.
Bouley: Let me just say that it was everything I hoped it would be. $48 lunch tasting menu is a steal.
Inoteca has an all Italian wine list and simple menu. It gets crowded, so go early or go late. I only had a cheese plate, but I was sitting at the bar and could see everything coming out of the kitchen and it all looked great. I wish we had a place like this in DC.
I need to eat a salad now.

What kind of sandwiches? Are we talking strictly deli fare? The Greek Deli has some great gyro/souvlaki/tuna/egg salad/falafel, etc on pitas, and we've gotten lunch platters from them on a number of occasions. Not sure of their delivery radius, though (19th and M).
Greek Deli does great catering. I've never had their sandwiches delivered but they do a host of other things and really put on a nice spread. "The Best!" according to Kosta, and who am I to argue with Kosta?

"Sable goes down like satin."
Um, yeah...

You could call them. 202-281-6679My wife and I have been wanting to get to Kotobuki for ever. We were thinking of doing an early dinner there with the baby. Anyone know if they have high chairs? -
Can you eat at the bar here? And if so, what are my chances of finding a spot for two around 7 tonight?

Goat's Head Soup, aka "Mannish Water". I didn't know what I was eating at the time, but it was quite good.
