This is really funny: I had never heard of "Firth of Fifth," but I knew about "Firth of Forth" because I saw it on a map once, and it was such a cool name that it has always stayed in my memory - I guess Genesis was making a pun.

(A "firth" is an estuary - where the river meets the sea. In this case, it's the estuary of where the Forth River empties into the North Sea.)

I'm curious-- what do you think of the music?

  2. I finally got a Spotify account. Man, the rabbit holes I get lost in. Anyway, I was checking out some albums that I listened to a lot back in college and came upon Seconds Out. It's amazing how well I'm remembering it-- despite over 30 years and all the bong hits.

Firth of Fifth from Seconds Out.

Another cool version of Firth of Fifth.

  3. How about "boner" as an archaic word? I'm talking about the kind of boner that means something along the lines of "stupid mistake". I had a co-worker who would use the word without looking to get a laugh. It was just part of his vocabulary. I knew what he meant (and stifled a laugh) when he'd say, "I made a boner", but who uses that anymore? He was from the Tidewater region-- is it part of the local lexicon? He was also a chef. Maybe that had something to do with it.

  4. For appetizers: moules marinières, pâté de foie gras, beluga caviar, eggs Benedictine, tart de poireaux, frogs' legs amandine, oeufs de caille Richard Shepherd-- c'est à dire, little quails' eggs on a bed of puréed mushroom. All mixed together and tossed in a bucket with the eggs on top. Double helping of the paté.

Main course: jugged hare with truffles, anchovies, Grand Marnier, bacon, and cream.

To drink: six bottles of Château Latour forty-five, a double Jeroboam of champagne and six crates of brown ale.

Wafer thin mint and a bucket.

  5. Hi All-- does anyone have any recommendations for an alert system with Life Alert, Life Station, Philips Lifeline, or any of the other services? I'm trying to get my mother set up and it's challenging. Fee structures are all over the place and some of the services seem suspect in terms of quality.

    Thanks for any advice!

    Michael

  6. A few hours after the shooting, the NRA tweeted:

    It wasn't up for long:

A helpful vocabulary lesson from the NRA:

Here's the NRA bitching about "The Ruling Class" being anti-gun. They seem to think that the ruling class consists of Bill and Hillary, Michael Bloomberg, Rahm Emanuel, and the leaders of the Women's March. The article was published 4 days ago. My understanding is that our current ruling class is made up of Wayne LaPierre's c*ckholsters, so what the fuck are they talking about?

It's shit like American processed cheese that skews people's ideas of value. Real cheese is not fancy. It's just normal food. The processed stuff is what's abnormal.  American "cheese" is cheap.

    Agreed. Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product?

Is there a reason that Supreme Court justices don't have term limits? (I don't remember where this is spelled out in the Constitution, or the reason it was established as such - it just seems like it would solve a lot of problems - even a twelve-year term, or something like that. Plus, that way, the American public would know in advance when certain judges would be leaving the bench, and why *not* know that?)

[I know I may sound like I'm against one party with these posts, but I assure everyone I'm not. It's the action itself that I find deplorable, and I'd be saying the exact same thing no matter who perpetrated it.]

    Some good points here:

"Why the Supreme Court Needs 18-Year Term Limits" by Ben Feuer on latimes.com

I wholeheartedly support term limits for the Court. Having octogenarians who haven't had any exposure to the real world in decades making such critical longterm decisions is just plain dumb. For instance, most of the current Court has virtually no understanding of current technology. I can't imagine my wise grandfather making an informed decision about net neutrality. Also, when you get to a certain age, who knows how sharp your mind is? I'm in my freakin' early 50's and the ol' noggin ain't 100% as it once (arguably) was.

And as far as I can tell, the Constitution doesn't say anything about lifetime tenure:

    Quote

    Article III

The judicial Power of the United States, shall be vested in one supreme Court, and in such inferior Courts as the Congress may from time to time ordain and establish. The Judges, both of the supreme and inferior Courts, shall hold their Offices during good Behavior, and shall, at stated Times, receive for their Services a Compensation which shall not be diminished during their Continuance in Office.

Once again, that ancient document just doesn't line up with modern reality. WTF is "good behavior" in this context? In my opinion, these lifetime gigs are a form of tyranny.

And yes, I'd be just as likely to throw out RBG as any of the others despite my leftie views.

In my lifetime, I know of no greater transgression against the American political system (the President had almost *ten months* left in his term).

Agreed. It was appalling and the repercussions of McConnell and crew getting what they wanted by upending the rules will haunt us for decades.

And remember, the transgressors had plenty of praise for Garland until they suddenly didn't.
