  1. for lunch- instant noodles at TenRen (they stick a tea-soaked egg in it), and steamed pork buns. its the best food i can find within walking distance of campus- and free wireless.

for dinner- didin't feel like going far, didn't feel like eating heavily- dithered between the bar at palena or dino- went to dino. Mmmm, burrata, mmm, boar. (Why is it that most of my comfort foods would make my mother scream in horror?)

  2. Since I locked my house keys and my wallet in the house yesterday, and didn't notice till I was at school, yesterday was very sad. Fortunately, I realized I had no wallet before spending my last $1.25 on a bottle of water; I got a Dr. Pepper instead. That held me until 4pm, when I found an emergency Kind nut bar while turning my car inside-out. (hoping to find a $10 bill to spring the car from the pay lot. $75 ticket if you can't pay. A different ticket if you leave it overnight. I only found a $1 and some change.)

Walked the mile to my office, borrowed a $10, scrounged more change from my desk. Ate some awful cheese and peanutbutter crackers. Walked back to the car, moved it to my assigned student lot (in delaware or new jersey, can't remember which), walked the two miles to the metro. Was 10 cents short to exit the metro.

Got home (magic!), scarfed down a Weihenstephan.

Somehow, after all this, the comfort food I settled on? A pint of cider and a veggie quesadilla at Kramers. Maybe it was the books. Maybe I was craving corn with spinach and cheese. Who knows. (Actually, Nick's Google-fried steak was kind of tasty. But mostly I stole his spinach.)

  3. though I should have ordered the Aviation I noticed only later on the cocktail menu.

Oh yes, you definitely should have had the Aviation. I had quite a few on my birthday a couple weeks ago, which rendered me unable to type up a homage to the food. I do remember fighting everyone else for the gnocci, and refusing to share my risotto. I also remember a love-in at the bar later, where we encountered another party celebrating a birthday. And then things got really hazy...

  4. I have to agree with 'mojoman' and will also say that by injecting your personal feelings at that time would only serve to fuel an already nasty situation.

To be clear, I wasn't referring to injecting my personal feelings while the party was still there; that clearly wouldn't have done anything to improve the situation. I was referring to after the abrupt departure, when their server looked a bit shell-shocked, but was carrying on with the job.

Clearly, the best solution is to go back and be a happy customer as soon as possible, and bring more people.

  5. As expected- Komi was wonderful last night. It was a slightly delayed birthday dinner, but very much worth the wait. The only damper on the evening was a table of four nearby, who inflicted a series of abuses on their wonderful server- most of the party arrived 25 minutes late, and then they ordered, and then *ten minutes later* two of them recalled that Oh, dear lord, they were Catholic, and thus couldn't eat meat- it was Lent! And Friday! Even so, accommodations were made, and still they complained about everything, and then- they left, abruptly, in the middle of the meal.

I guess, mostly, this is a question out to the gruppe- what does one do? It feels wrong to just sit by quietly, which in the end is basically what I did. I tried to catch the servers eye, and smile, and if they had come over to my table I *would* have broken my silence and told them what I thought: that they had done everything right, and sometimes people just suck. But they were trying to go on with their job, and I really didn't want to break their composure after they managed to keep their head up and smiling despite the stresses.

But man, do some customers suck.

That said- Thank you, to everyone at Komi, for such a good evening. I hope to be back soon. (Who knew that I liked radishes?!)

  6. I've been told by several wine-knows that the longest-running wine-tasting group meets every Tuesday at a church somewhere near the German Embassy. I'd like to attend, but I can't find any further information about these tastings. Can anybody help me with this? Thanks!
There is a yahoo group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wwcs/

Can't provide much more info than that (I'm allergic to a lot of wine, so have never been), but the people I've met seem to be a nice bunch of folks.

  7. I'm hungry, but the wind keeps howling at my window and rattling the gates. So I am drinking tea and crunching scharfenberger cocoa nibs. Perhaps, later, I will bestir myself and wander out to Tryst for a grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a mug of The-Drink-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named (chaippucino). Or perhaps a draft of Guinness with a shot of espresso.

Might not be classy, but I'll enjoy myself anyway.

  8. Dinner and a movie?

    much ado about nothing? harsh...

I venture out so others don't have to in this weather: They're still a bit confused today. Best to put off for a day or two- hopefully by then they'll have also picked up some decent mats to capture the slush and cover the slippery floor. Too many people behind the counter and loitering around- I was happy to see that they seem to have hired some enthusiastic and friendly locals, but they shouldn't all be behind the counter at once. And even more limited seating than at the falafelshop.

They're down to four brats left, no idea how they're doing on others. I got a spicy Italian sausage, downtown- it had decent flavour, but wasn't a bit spicy. And $7.50 for a sausage and a soda seems a bit excessive, considering that I can get a tasty sausage and tea at Teaism for less, and have a place to sit. OTOH, I expect this place will shine with the tipsy crowd, especially once they start piling the toppings on. Chili cheese fries at 2am? Probably an easy sell. Not so much at a sober (and chilly) lunch...

The weather isn't cooperating, either- it switched from sleet to snow and back about three times on my trudge there and back. Stay home, stay warm, say hi to the Dawgs later this week.

  9. Confirmed- they are opening tomorrow at 11, got a chance to look at the menu and it seems like you get a choice of hot dog/sausage and tunr it into whatever you want via the fixin bar. My mouth is watering, I will be there tomorrow, snow permitting

Clearly I will cut class, sleep in, and then walk a few blocks over to have a nice haute dog tomorrow.

I love it when a plan comes toegther!

  10. Sooo, you're a member of the "Geezer" contingent? Welcome to the club.

Seriously, we rented a Zipcar (that Prius hybrid parked in front of San Marco) one Saturday night last September to go a party thrown by a DR.com member. Returned at about 12:30 am (waaayyy past our bedtime) and found the WORST traffic jam I have ever witnessed at the corner of 18th and Kalorama. I believe staying indoors on the weekend is a very good survival strategy.

moi? a Geezer?! I think I'm more of a Curmudgeon, actually.

OMG, you *never* should drive up 18th between 9pm and 3am on a Friday or Saturday. Really, from 7pm, given the Lauriol Plaza nightmare at T. (depends on how you feel about driving in the oncoming lanes between S and T.) I like 15th, because the lights are a continuous green from P to Euclid if you go exactly the speed limit. or 19th, if I'm coming from Florida. The light at Florida and 18th is a disaster.

But yes, I did crash at a friends house last night rather than try to drive back into A/M at midnight...

  11. Soon I hope to resume long afternoon walks with the little dog.

Heya. Why don't we make plans for me to come over for a walk after class next week? Walks would be good for me as well as the dog! (Sorry I missed you earlier this week, I was in Toronto freezing my &%! off.)

  12. It's where Mantis used to be (and Pasta In, and India 2000, and Miss Saigon, and La Plaza  ) Doesn't bode well, does it?

Hrmm. Personally, I always thought the buddha at the bar looked rather pissed off to be in such a raucous environment, and thus the closing was inevitable... although clearly the location is somewhat suboptimal, as most foot traffic is on 18th or calvert.
