  1. If you live near Eden Center and your guests are into ethnic/exotic foods, you can get party platters made for about 10-25 dollars, depending on the item at the delis there. Trays of summer rolls, spring rolls, grilled meats, etc. Cheap and tasty, too.

  2. Kotobuki was awesome last night. I love the place. It's just so small and cozy and hits the spot for sushi.

The toro was FANTASTIC last night - you must go and get some TODAY if possible. Holy moly, it just melted in your mouth and was soooo incredibly rich that I nearly fainted with pleasure.

Ok, not fainted but I sure as heck stopped talking for a good minute!

Last night's damage = 30 pieces of sushi, sashimi and maki. Yippy!

And if you like green tea, the green tea mochi will hit the spot!

  3. ...

Dim Sum is the secret baby charmer.  Can't fuss if your mouth is full of baked pork buns.

Mind you, most dim sum restaurants are so noisy you can't even hear your own thoughts, much less hear some kid crying.

Pet peeve - people who go to restaurants and constantly talk on their cell phone in a LOUD VOICE LIKE THIS. Last night I wanted to pitch the bottle of fish sauce at this woman who was nattering away on the phone. @#$!

  4. Cubano's is nice for lunch. It's a good setting and the food's tasty, if a bit pricey. It's not a mom and pop, hole-in-the-wall operation. I second Negril's patties - those are the best I've had in the area.

  5. Here, here! I'm tired of parents who think that it's not necessary to disclipine their kids' public behavior. What, they just think that when they grow up they grow out of it? Hardly.

Have mercy, don't even get me started on how rude people can be to you if you work in a carry-out restaurant. Amazing how rude people can be just because they're consuming their food at home...ai.

  6. Shoot, let's not restrict this to kids. I've seen teens and adults behave badly in chains and restaurants. Ugh.

Hot Shoppes was a chain and I loved it. Granted, it did mislead me to believe real mashed potatoes must served with an ice cream scooper but nonetheless, I loved every bit of it.

Chains do have their place, that's for sure!

  7. Last night's dinner was at Kotobuki. Stellar!

    I had:

    Mackerel sashimi (starter)

    Seaweed salad

    Main course:

    Lobster

    Uni (YUM!)

    White tuna

    Toro

    Spicy scallop roll

    Yellow tail roll

    Salmon skin roll

    Dessert:

Green tea mochi ice cream (DELISH!)

So that was 28 pieces of sushi consumed by lil' ole me last night.

    OH YEAH!

  8. Water buffalo yogurt from Trader Joe's. Strawberry flavor by Woodstock. Goooood stuff. Go try some today, seriously!

It's really thick, almost like a custard with very little whey, if any at all. Much thicker than Total Greek Yogurt. Very mild and not tangy, which is good.

It soothes the craving for something rich and creamy. This is my second one of the day.

  9. FYI, it's cilantro in jars of yummy goodness at Chinatown Express. No parsley. It's a typical Chinese condiment - cilantro, scallion, ginger and garlic oil (or variations on the theme) - to eat with your BBQ or steamed chicken.

Speaking of goodness- who here has had the pickled garlic and reaked for days afterwards? I did, I did! Oh man, that's some good stuff.

  10. Sorry guys, I can't make the dim sum days due to practice commitments. i went to China Garden this past weekend and found it to be pleasantly surprising. It wasn't great but it was good.

Then again, I had my palate spoiled up in Flushing, Queens, NY 2 weeks ago. Oh MAN, are we deprived down here. <sobs>

  11. In the book, Cooking for Mr. Latte, the author has a couple of recipes using Meyer lemons. One that stands out is a pasta dish that I quite can't remember what exactly was in it but according to her, 'twas good. (Apologies for the spotty memory, my brain's on cold medication...)

  12. Hi all:

I don't know this section of town very well, I'm afraid and was curious to know what good eats are nearby. I know Chinatown is about 4 blocks away (correct?) and I can find decent eats there but I'd like to know what late-night dining options are near the cinema. Forgive my ignorance but what section of town is this - is this near Penn Quarter? What are the reasonably priced good eats near the cinema?

Thanks in advance for your help!
