  1. So, help? We like kitfo (raw! They cooked it last time at Queen of Sheba. Not nice. Pile of ground beef.) Sambusas are also a favorite. Other things, well, we will try many different things. We like to try a variety of food.

Had some great (raw) Kitfo at Dama in Arlington and the tibs were great too. A recent convo with a cab driver about the best Kitfo in town spurned the visit. Supposedly the region the owner is from is known for their Kitfo.

  2. I vaguely remember the volume being on for some games at Rustico, Eatbar and Liberty Tavern - since this is a big game they might have it on tonight. Could be worth a call to ask. Hard times will be beyond packed - they are a Caps bar. Spider Kelly's has decent beer and I'm a fan of their nachos - but again it is more of a sports bar scene.

  3. Really? Last time I got sushi at the Clarendon location it was AWFUL. I ended up throwing it out - not that there was anything like "the fish was rotten" but just that it didn't taste very good at all.

Of course, this was probably a couple of years ago. I've never had the remotest desire to try WF's sushi since.

I agree, the Clarendon Whole Foods sushi is awful - or at least it was a few months ago.

In my experience, the grocery store sushi pecking order is Foggy Bottom WF>Deana and Deluca>>Harris Teeter>>Other Whole Foods.

  4. I finally checked out the made to order Kaz sushi at the Foggy Bottom location and was pleasantly surprised. Best grocery store sushi I've had, better than Deana and Deluca's and better than a lot of restaurant sushi too. Price is steep but they were generous with the fish portion. Interesting options in the make your own - spicy sprouts, sweet tofu, etc.

  5. When I read this today, my first thought about the manufacturers was "Boo Effing Hoo." They figured out a way to make cheap, fatty effluvia sorta palatable to stretch out ground meat "products" and sell it to the ignoratti. Now they are crying "Foul!" because they have been caught out. If 25% of a cow is involved in this mess, then maybe they ought to think about paying some trained butchers to do a little better, instead of the untrained folk they use and pay them peanuts. When did all this "useless" meat become a problem? When they started using non-union, untrained meat cutters, perhaps? There's a "side of the story" I'd really like to read.

The way I read it this other company found a way to use other slaughterhouses' scraps. The 'theys' are different companies. Theoretically, that means it is profitable for the slaughterhouses to waste 25% of the cow even if pink slime doesn't exist. So there is little economic incentive to hire a skilled butcher.

  6. Whenever my family is in town, or we are traveling together, at least one person insists on going back to change before dinner because they feel whatever they wore for touristing (usually the culprit is a t-shirt, jeans and sneakers) will be out of place where we are dinning that night. Since I hardly ever wear those things, its not me, but my midwestern family has enough sense to know you don't go to a nice place looking like a schlub.

And I don't believe its a socioeconomic issue at all - its a matter of being raised with social awareness and manners. Decent looking clothes are cheap these days anyways.

  7. You are unconventional. I never would've thought to eat Japanese in Cleveland but I can see that NoodleCat is quite tempting with their offerings. This trip, I really want to try a Symon joint and I want something more than sandwiches. Perhaps you can tell me whether the following is worth trying: beef cheek pierogi, wild steel head trout, pork schnitzel, braised short ribs, and muffalettta. Now that I typed them out, I don't think they're really all that exciting sounding. I wished Lolita serves lunch - crispy chicken livers, roasted bone marrow, etc. sounds so much more interesting. I'll check out Greenhouse Tavern too. Thanks.

I had the beef cheek pierogi for lunch a few years ago - from what I remember I enjoyed it, although it was heavy.

I've also heard good things about this place.

  8. This little tidbit, which seems to have escaped our attention, is awesome.

In this day and age, anyone who doesn't take 5 seconds to google their business name before they invest money it is taking a big $$$ risk that is completely unnecessary. Especially if you are going to be doing your own trademark filings with the PTO instead of hiring a lawyer - and clearly do not understand trademark law. This quote "And we were able to get the initial approval for La Forchetta for the United States. Nobody else will be able to use it" - uh yea thats not how it works. Its baffling how many people do this.

  9. She should have had better advisors & PR.

That's the thing - her PR person quit over this, BEFORE it went public. People were wondering why her publicist abruptly quit a month before this all came out. Its pretty implicit her publicist didn't think this was a good idea, and quit when it became clear Paula was going forward with it anyway, despite advice not too. The publicist didn't want anything to do with it.

I get she didn't want to lose her livelihood, but the whole healthy eating, lose weight, we are an obese nation bandwagon is big and getting bigger. There is plenty of money to be made going that route. I'm sure some network would pay big bucks to have her on some weight loss show.

  10. Please, I know that I am archaic, backward and without hope of future growth. But that's all right. It's just me.

    And Andy Rooney. RIP.

I only very recently got a smart phone. I still find the hardest thing to do on it is make a phone call. And I'm not even 30.

On that note, what is the easiest way to use the dining guide on a Droid based phone?

  11. I've gotten take out here several times and they've done a good job - always ready in the quoted 15 minutes, even when they are slammed. They have had a wait a few times I've been (a Thursday and a Sunday) and been suprisingly busy but not full on random weeknights as well. A big change from the Mei's patronage and even the early days of Mala Tang. The Zhong dumplings, Dan Dan noodles and Mapo Tofu have all been good - with the Mapo tofu being less oily than HKP (this is a good thing).

  12. I'd second Seventh Hill if you have a vegetarian.

Sunday night I'd suggest 14th St., Estadio, Cork, Masa 14th, or Birch and Barley are available for food; plus there is a healthy bar scene at ChurchKey, Cafe St. Ex, or the Gibson if you want upscale or Black Jack if you want bocce ball.

You could also check out the new Mintwood in Adams Morgan on Sunday.

Also I'd keep in mind March 17th is St. Patricks Day and a Saturday -- won't see any revelers I bet at Fiola but I'm sure other places in Penn Quarter/Chinatown will be a mess.

  13. Once the Neighborhood Restaurant Group brewery and bar opens at The Yards, all of Cervera's places in Southeast will be white noise (and I'm usually more 'pro' his places than 'con').

Ditto. It would not surprise me if that place becomes as big of an attraction as the stadium. And with that great, mostly still undiscovered waterfront park next door I'm sure most people won't mind the enivitable 2 hour wait as much.

But I'm sure Xavier will rake in some business with the overflow.
