  1. I second Don's note above. I recently organized a work dinner at Oval Room. It was a fantastic choice for a large event. We had about 50 people and the food was awesome. The steak was perfectly cooked, which is not easy when you are serving that many people at once. I think the restaurant is pretty reasonable for how high quality the food is there. Our budget was $100 a person w/ food, tax, drink, tips and we were able to stay on budget (maybe a bit more, we were all a bit 'hazy' at the end of the night).

I can't wait to go back and try their regular menu.

  2. I really like Northside Social. I have had their Breakfast Sandwich with Sausage three times, and every time the poached egg was overcooked. Has anyone else experienced this? I was wondering if this was by design

. I asked for a soft poached egg, and still received a hard yolk. Obviously the sandwich is still delicious either way, I think it would be better with a runny yolk. Admittedly, I am being nit-picky here, just wanted to see if anyone else had a different experience.

  3. I went by today to check it out. The coupon is certainly a great deal. The truck looked awesome, the inside looked clean, and they had great music playing.

This being their first day, I am hesitant to give a review. I didn't really like the sandwich ( I got the chicken with rebel sauce), it was OK, i thought the bread was very dry and I was expecting all of the different toppings to brighten up the sandwich, but it fell flat for me. This was my first banh mi ever, so I do not have anything to compare it to.

I did go with two coworkers, one of them had the Tofu, they both really like their subs. The Vietnamese iced coffee made with Cafe Du Monde looked really good. i would like to go back and try that.

I will try it again in a few weeks. I hate to judge a place on their first day.

  4. The article notes that Landrum is touting fried chicken. I always liked the fried chicken at Ray's The Classics until it was discontinued. I wish they would carry it at the original Rays which I am more likely to frequent.

    Michael -

Any word on whether or not the other Ray's locations will be seeing the new menu items mentioned for East River?

  5. I had a chance to visit the sneak peak of Northside Social this past weekend, and visited again this morning to try the food. Overall, I am very impressed. Great Coffee. Huge selection of baked goods and the breakfast sandwich I had with Maple Sausage, Poached Egg, and VT Cheddar was fantastic. I have a more thorough review on my blog.

I would highly recommend checking out their breakfast selection, I have not had a chance to try their evening menu, but it looks good.

I am curious to see if it will be the immediate success that Liberty Tavern was. That place seemed to be packed from day 1. I can't imagine the stress level they are experiencing right now, with opening Northside Social, Lyon Hall, and running Liberty Tavern all at the same time.

  6. I went to Spider Kelly's last night to check out the new digs. As soon as I walked in, I was amazed. The new space is awesome, and immediately I thought Spider Kelly's is going to be my new favorite bar in Arlington. I liked the old Spider Kelly's a lot, and I am impressed that they were able to combine a sports bar, with an upscale yet comfortable feel. I haven't seen another bar like it. The beer specials were awesome last night ($2 bottles till 8).

So the drinks were great, the new space is great, now onto the food. Unfortunately, this is where the evening went downhill. I had not read the previous post about the growing pains Spider Kelly was having before I visited last night. It was very obvious they were having trouble keeping up. Our food took forever to arrive at at our table, and once it arrived, we found out that our orders were not put in correctly. I have to say I miss the old fries and the fried chicken was super greasy. The hamburgers are still good though.

But, the important part is, the manager at Spider Kelly's acknowledged the problems, corrected our orders, asked for feedback on the new menu and comped part of our meal. Every restaurant needs some time to iron out the kinks and I think once Spider Kelly's does so, it will be the best bar in Arlington, hands down.
