  1. Desperately seeking restaurant that serves octopus or squid cooked in its own ink. Jaleo has this as a special once, but I've never seen it anywhere else. I have seen squid ink pasta- the black kind- but not pasta with ink "sauce." This, too, would be a great find. Please PM me if you know of anywhere that serves something like this or something else with ink. Thanks!!!

  2. For the last seven years I changed to Soy oil for all my cooking since peanut and other allergies mushroomed. Now I have seen increasingly a lot of SOY allergies.

Ashley- You have attended the DR.com dinners previously at Passage and could you kindly jog my memory as to, what did we serve you. We can definitely do something for your dinner though it might not be all the same dishes.

Synaesthesia- We are using the fresh Blue crabs, Dungeness comes frozen and the fresh ones are very expensive. Crab Tikki (cakes) app. is with pasteurized Jumbo lump.

TheMatt-Your allergies can be more easily solved, in the samesauces would you like us to cook some kind of fish, chicken or lamb.

Thank you so much for your response! I actually have never been to a DR.com dinner, only the picnics. I certainly wouldn't want to put you and your kitchen to any trouble!

  3. I've never tried it so can't speak towards its quality, but there is an Asian noodle/pho place on L between 19th and 20th. I believe it's called Noodles Fresh or something like that.... Whenever I've walked by it's been pretty populated, but that could be due to the lack of lunch spots in the area.

  4. REally... I'd choose Juice Joint on VT Ave btw K and L. Organic for the most part, healthy, and you can ask about ingredients and specify to your heart's content (I know, I have food allergies). Otherwise, I'd opt for a Jose Andres restau, like Atlantico or Jaleo.

  5. Stopped by Potenza for drinks with a date a couple weeks ago. Can't recall the name of the drink I had, but it was some sort of strawberry/balsamic/basil concoction that was very strong, not too sweet, just not what I expected (Orvieto perhaps?) We also ordered the bruschetta with gorgonzola, which we thought would be toast topped with cheese. Instead we were subjected to bread absolutely soaked with a cheese sauce. It was... gross. I can't describe it any other way. I like gorgonzola, but this was like someone decided to make a Velveeta version of it. We actually laughed about the dish.

On the other hand, the bar service was very friendly and helpful.

  6. Neither. The regular Rocket Fuel dressing at the 12th Street location was pretty spicy. And yes, it tastes like water because I was told they are water-based, not oil-based. I guess that's why they're in the SPA category?
No, I know that! I'm just surprised, b/c the last time I tried it, it really had all the flavor of H2O :D
  7. This may be an odd recommendation, but anything with the Rocket Fuel dressing at Chop't now fits this bill too. Whew! I thought I was drinking Siraicha sauce! Ask for extra dressing if you want it extra spicy.

Hmm do you mean the tex-mex or asian rocket fuel? B/c to me the regular rocket fuel tastes like water!

  8. I have also been to Cal Pep. I echo this poster's sentiments and suggest getting a seat in the back. The front bar is overwhelming. I was with a group of 5 and we were able to get a reservation. If the fried baby artichokes are available, ask for two orders.

If you can't get into Passadis del Pep, his formal restaurant, make your way to Tapas del pep. Straight bar tapas, a wait for sure, but well worth it. I waited two hours for Pep himslef to ask me what I liked, and serve up the most delicious tapas. I ate my weight in seafood, causing Pep to remark "she looks small, but wow, she eats a lot." One of my favorite memories from Barca.

  9. Hi All:

Just got back from lunch at Teatro Goldoni and have an incident to report. I ordered the whole rock fish served with potatoes and cabbage. The plate came out and the waiter showed it to me with the detail that he would de-bone it. That's great b/c I was wearing a dry-clean only business suit. He de-boned it and then, to my absolute horror, dribbled olive oil all over it!

I could taste that underlying the layer of EVOO taste was a really good lunch but that heavy oiliness left me not wanting more. I didn't even eat half, which was embarrassing as I didn't pay and hate wasting food.

Given the reviews and pictures here, I was expecting greatness. Are they worth another shot? I will stay tuned.

Is that sarcasm I detect? I certainly hope so.. .because EVOO... the HORROR!

Next time ask for light on the oil, or, for goodness sake, get over your dry clean only suit and cook the fish yourself!

  10. Overnight soaking in cold water is not necessary. A half-hour soak in hot water does the same thing--but you don't need that much water. A cup or two for one ounce of 'shrooms is plenty.

That is what I use for my non-soy "soy sauce." I use some of that liquid, plus vegemite/marmite dissolved in a bit of hot water (very umami rich), plus salt, molasses if I have it around, sometimes a bit of red wine.

    Oooooh mami.

  11. Haven't been to Poste in awhile and we are heading there tomorrow with some friends visiting from out of town. Would appreciate thoughts on two questions:

    1) Any standouts on the menu that cannot be missed (whether it be cocktails, apps, entrees, or dessert)?

    2) Are nice jeans with a dressier shirt suitable for attire there?

    Thanks.

    1) I love love love the Hamachi appetizer with crispy ginger and scallions. For cocktails, try the lavender margarita or the basil lemontini- two standbys that have never done me wrong. If anyone goes for brunch, their version of the bloody mary (which I've only had virgin) is delicious.

    2) You will be completely fine in that attire. I've seen much more casual there.
