  1. I went in the other day and met the new owner. Looks like some of the servers and bartenders will be returning, so I won't have to re-introduce myself. I drove by again the other day just to see the sign. It makes me really happy. Too bad I work late on Friday, I'd love to go to the re-opening. It also means my wife will know who to call when she can't reach me at the brewery :)

  2. I'm getting into this discussion late in the game, but has anyone mentioned Growlers to get a growler? If you're looking for empties, you can also check out local homebrew shops. I was looking at getting them wholesale, but they are still damn expensive unless you order in bulk. Check out Maryland Homebrew.

If you're looking for alternative places to fill a growler, we fill them for $10.

  3. The article states that the landlord was owed $160,125.64 and the court found in favour of the landlord on that account.

I have no idea what weekly rent on that property is...but wouldn't you think that with $160K of back rent owed, they were more than just a few weeks late? Doesn't sound like "indian giving" to me. Sounds more like cash flow management.

I am aware of my earlier statement. I don't know why I was leaning towards Clark. Ah well, I had a few beers when I wrote that.

    Deffinately a cash flow issue.

  4. Only one side says that there was such an agreement, and no terms were discussed, so we are not sure what really transpired. If the landlord could not make payments for taxes or debt service because the tenants were not living up to the terms of the lease he has every right to take them to court. There really is not enough information in the article to determine if one party acted in good faith, bad faith, or a mixture of the two.

I stand corrected. I'm just used to slimy landlords, mine isn't, but I think most are.

I guess I can relate to the landlord a bit, I know when one of my distributors doesn't pay me right away, and the brewing industry is notorious for this apparently, it sets me back quite a lot. I'll shut up now. :)

It was funny that the Gazette referred to the General Store as the General Store Post Office Tavern, I thought that's what pissed Clark off in the beginning when the Post called it G SPOT. To me it was always the G SPOT, never ate there. I was in there perhaps once, and that was to drop off beer samples, I never heard back from them.

So I revise my original post, its a shame a restaurant has to close, and leave it at that. :)

  5. On second thought, I would probably have paid money to see the argument.

But the landlord had agreed to a weekly payment plan, he turns around and sues them when collections came a call'n for back taxes. Its for lack of a better term, indian giving

  6. I was flipping through the Gazette yesterday and came across this headline "The General Store closes its doors" http://www.gazette.net/stories/03302011/takonew213740_32539.php

Regardless of what some people think of Clark, I myself have no opinion, it is a real shame that she was forced to close down. The article, I felt, made the landlord look like a real prick, he probably is. So, I'd like to wish Gillian Clark and Robin Smith good luck in their next venture.

  7. I used to keep a bottle of this in my locker in high school, why? Because in a Windex bottle it looks like the product - my locker was searched twice for... umm... contraband and they never found it, though they must have thought that I was mighty vain to keep a mirror in the door (why else would I need a bottle of window cleaner).

Here's something that isn't a cocktail, but its just as bad as a bad cocktail. Never buy a tequilla named after the neighborhood you're buying it in. Many years ago, I bought a bottle of "Cleveland Park Tequilla." Wow, what a mistake. It smelled and tasted like terpentine.

  8. Okay, on thing that was worse than the beer and cider. It was called a "Windex"

    It contained the following:

    blue curacao

    rail tequilla

    triple sec

    Sprite

See why it was called Windex? It seemed to be popular among the early 20's crowd, it was a drink made to just F you up and not to enjoy.

  9. The Snakebite is a classic!! :)

You'll probably hate the one beer cocktail that ulysses turned me onto: the Dog's Nose. A pint of stout with a shot of gin poured in. Zuidam gin has a nice vanilla vibe to it, and pairs really well with different stouts and porters I've tried. Gary Regan has a recipe where you heat it up and add additional spices, I like Justin's way better.

I guess I'm a purist when it comes to beer. I'll make beer with other flavors in it, but why pervert a perfectly good brew with something else. I can understand if its crappy beer, but if its made with good beer...this would be like making a bourbon and coke with top shelf bourbon.

  10. I just saw a tiny blurb in this week's City Paper, at least online in the Young & Hungry section. Carole Greenwood was booted after two days at Bethesda's Foods, Wine, & Company. The owner said she just wasn't a good fit. I remember when she was in Cleveland Park, I had a friend who would help organize Cleveland Park Day and get the local businesses to part take in activities or donate something. She was the only one who didn't, in that whole block from Porter to what...Macomb?

I was offered a job at Buck's and I kept coming in for my "first day." After being asked if I could "come back tomorrow" three times in a row, I just said, "screw it." She said she wasn't ready to show me the ropes. That doesn't show a lot of organizational skills. Not too long after that she got booted from Comet Ping Pong and Bucks. I found Bucks to be way over priced. A few friends of mine who had eaten there were scolded by Greenwood when they sent their dishes back. I'm not trying to bad mouth her, okay maybe I am a little, but she is just not a very nice person. I have a big problem when people do not act professional, and it seems to happen a lot in the industry, egos get in the way, a people with short tempers try to make you feel really small. I find the shorter the chef, the worse their temper is. I got yelled at alot, I'm 6'3. :)

Here's the article from Bethesda Magazine http://www.bethesdamagazine.com/Blogs/Table-Talk/January-February-2011/Another-One-Down-at-Food-Wine-amp-Co-Carole-Greenwood-is-Out/

  11. Depends on if you want the tour and tasting. I am open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays. Saturdays it has to be after 2:00. This Saturday is kind of shot, I'm doing a tasting at Roots Market in Olney. Fridays, I am around 8:30-5PM with the exception of 20 minutes on Friday when I go and drop off beer at the DLC.

If you wait a week, I should have another experimental beer ready to drink. I just bottled the Brunch Stout.
