  1. I'm intrigued by Chicken 65, which I've never tried before. Northern Virginia Table Tennis Center is less than two miles from here, so I'll be trying this dish soon.

Does anyone know of other Southern Indian restaurants that have Chicken 65? I don't recall ever seeing it on a menu.

Up in Columbia, I have seen Chicken 65 at both Mirchi Wok and Chutney before. I don't see it on their online menu right now though, so they might have been specials or they might just not be listed online?

  2. Grabbed a few slices today, that's some darn good pizza. I liked the NY style better than the Sicilian personally, though both were good. Good sausage too, looking forward to them getting the rest of their toppings lined up so I can get a proper ricotta + sausage pizza (my favorite for NY style).

Well the bad news is it sounds like their delivery range will be just short of reaching where I work (they said 3.5 miles is the current plan but it might expand). The good news is they will be open 7 days a week so I can actually get some pizza on a Monday night.

As expected there's only about ~5 seats in the place, so unfortunately that does make it difficult to bring friends along.

The fish balls were fantastic - possibly the best I've had anywhere. They were not dense or gummy like they are a lot of other places. They were light and just enough chew to hold them together, and tasted like fish, not just "fishy". I completely agree on getting double fishballs.

The shrimp balls were also delicious, and filled with something. I don't know what! Do I want to know what?

Pretty good article too, want to try that Shanghai style braised pork next time I go I think.

  4. Sorry for the lateness on this, but they have a lot of special events and deals going on here so if you like this place you should probably keep a close eye on their twitter. They did a 4 course beer dinner pair with Waradeca beers, 50$ including tax&tip, tickets in advance and limited to something like 40 people. I unfortunately could not find anyone who could go with me so I missed it, so hopefully they do more events like that in the near future. They also do stuff like discounts on burgers during football games and such.

Also, they have brunch here on the weekend with a different menu, including fried chicken and waffles (which were awesome). You can also get a bottomless buffet (which is actually pretty good, and includes omelets and waffles of course), and/or bottomless brunch mixed drinks. So again if you love the normal menu it's worth checking out the brunch as well for a few new things.

Need to try those chicken wings myself next time!

  5. Yeah the menu here is big enough that you know there's probably a handful of really good other things on it, but you might have to sort through a whole lot of okay to mediocre dishes to get to them.

Might try out that Sichuan Beef & Tofu dish next time myself.

The 5 spice tofu is really good. Fish balls will always be my favorite though, maybe I should ask next time if I can just get double fishballs.

  6. The dry hotpot here is really awesome, hit the spot perfectly and now I'm fighting off a spicy food induced coma. For mine I got beef, Fish Balls, Tofu, Rice Cakes, Pork Belly, and Potatoes. I'll do without the Potatoes next time (they were kind of in an odd place of being thin sliced but very soft, I'd rather they were crispy or chunks) and probably swap in a different vegetable, but other than that everything was super good. Just for the hotpot (which has a 6 item minimum) totaled about $20, but that's enough food for 2-3 people or meals easily.

I did also try the chicken wing and lamb skewers, they were both good (especially the lamb though) but considering the quantity of hotpot you get, I'll probably skip them from now on.

I'm curious how good the rest of the menu is, they have plenty of other staples on the menu, though many of them only seem to appear on the to-go menu and were not on the dine-in menu?

  7. This place is open by the way. We stopped in on Thursday, they were very busy up front but there was a bunch of empty tables in the back. Got a whole lot of good beers and the Berkshire Pork, and a deep dish cookie for dessert.

Food was very good, beer selection was excellent, service was excellent. The director Greg came out to our table personally and gave us a bottle of a favorite beer of his. Pretty cool!

  8. Since there are apparently 3 Ramen places in Rockville within a very short distance of one another (Temari, Maki, Ki No Spoon), would anyone care to chime in on if any of them are particularly worth a visit and/or which one is the best of the bunch?

  9. When I had the Monte Cristo at the Clarksburg location a year or so ago, it was not very similar to the ones I had had at other locations. It did not appear to be in a deep fried shell of any sort, and was pretty overdone. Not particularly good. I dunno what the deal is or why their's was different.

Anyway, there's another one of these opening in Frederick at Market Square, for whatever that's worth.

Well here's a nice surprise, a great Mexican place right along East Street here in Frederick. Turns out this place has been here for years. I'm always on the look out for good places to get Tacos/Burritos/Etc, so I stopped in for lunch to try the place out.

It's a small place, it's got a decent number of tables crammed in, but it seems like Take Out is most people's preferred option. The service here was kind of exceptionally friendly and helpful, both my server and the lady working the register were incredibly friendly and helped me figure out what to get. I went with the Cancun Burrito, which is Chicken, Chorizo, Beans, Cheese, and Salsa Verde, with a side of beans and rice.

So yeah, wow. Might be the best Burrito I've ever eaten, amazing flavor, and a little bit spicy. It came out very fast as well, even another patron who came in after me was surprised how fast they got their food so I'm guessing that's just how they do. I also grabbed some Sopapillas to take home with me. Amazing, and obviously cooked to order since they were still very fresh by the time I got home. They also have Tres Leches and Churros which I will be sure to try on future visits.

They also have lunch specials, $9.99 for a whole lot of good food and a soda. It looks liked they used to have breakfast specials, but unfortunately they are no longer opened for breakfast, and instead open at 11am for lunch. So yeah, if you're in Frederick and need some quick and amazing Mexican food, give this place a try.

  11. I feel like I've spent a lot of time talking about how good this place is but I don't have any posts in this thread somehow? Not sure if Don spun this thread off something else or I'm just crazy.

Anyway, just want to reaffirm that this place deserves all the praise it gets. Tons of great things on the menu, I have a difficult time deciding what to get every time I go. Personal favorites tend to be: Muhammara or Pasha Ezmesi spreads, Adana (delicious ground lamb skewer), Sucuk, Spiced Chicken, and the Tavuk Pide. But there's probably a dozen other things I might order just depending on how I feel.

Another big advantage of this place is that it's big. Really big. If I somehow get roped into going out for dinner on a Friday or Saturday night, this is usually the place I'll try first.

Their specials rotate pretty constantly by the way, I've seen some pretty unique things on there and had a few that I wish were on the regular menu. Last time I was in they had a hummus made with Ghost Pepper, yikes.

  12. Heading to Frederick for dinner with friends in two weeks.  We head up there a couple times a year to meet with another couple as it's pretty much half way from both our houses.  We usually eat at Family Meal, but are looking to try something different.  Still want that casual vibe and mid-priced menu.  Right now, Tasting Room and Monocacy Crossing are both on the target list.  Can anyone make any additional recommendations or suggest which of these might be more appealing?

Might be too late at this point in time, but Reina is worth a look if you want to try something Latin American. There's also Pistarro's, which is generally pretty good (many of the best things on the menu aren't pizza just FYI).

If you haven't done Ayse yet, that's generally the first one I recommend, especially with a large number of friends or family to share everything with. Price can swing pretty high or low depending on what you order, but most of what they have is good.

Monocacy Crossing is solid. Had some really delicious stuff here the last time I went, and the Coconut Poundcake was pretty great. Also I ordered a shot of a craft brewed Absinthe that they had ... and they gave me about half a snifter full of it. I appreciate it, but wow guys that stuff isn't light.

Also related to Frederick dining! Has anyone been to Cafe Bueno yet? It's a little place along East Street (south of 7th Street IIRC) in a small stripmall. Everything I've read so far suggests it's very good, but I haven't had a chance to run out there myself. Why am I reading about food at 11:30pm. Now I'm hungry.

  13. Finally got to stop in here last night, after an extra long day of work so I arrived a bit after 8. Place was mostly full but I got seated immediately. For what it's worth, the exact hours listed on the door currently say "From 5 until we run out of dough."

So when I was talking about the place being small ... yeah. There are 7-8 tables, with room for maybe 8-10 people at the bar, so you might fit about 40 people in here at a time. They have a hostess and waiters here if you were wondering as well. The space is pretty nice overall, just small.

Some interesting stuff on the menu, but I decided to just try their regular Margherita to keep it simple. The sauce is pretty good, a small step above Pizza CS or Pistarro's equivalent. Crust was a little disappointing, a little too crispy and not as good as Pizza CS's in general. Overall impression is good so far though, I'd take this Margherita over Pizza CS's or Pistarro's equivalent.

Next time I will be trying something a little more adventurous to see what else they can do. There was another pizza that caught my eye which had egg, shaved truffles + white truffle oil, and fontina. There's also one with "fairytale squash", n'duja, rosemary, and ricotta, which also sounds pretty amazing.

Beer selection was solid but nothing super exciting. Dessert wise they have ice cream and cookies. I tried the cookies, they were fine but again nothing special, probably wouldn't order them again.

Service was very on point and friendly. I got in and out pretty quickly, and my pizza came out quite fast.

Overall take, I like this place so far. It's much less out of the way for me than Pizza CS, and isn't in an awkward location like Pistarro's. But again it's extremely small, it seems like going here on a day other than Tuesday may be a real crap shoot (especially for the time being). The question remains at this point if they will have a particular kind of pizza that completely wows me, like my favorites at the other places in the area. And I will be pretty interested to see what else they decide to do with the menu here in the future, I'm assuming they plan to add entrees later, and some of the pizza styles I imagine will rotate in and out with the season.

  14. Yep. I was kind of surprised they took that spot because I recall it being very small and narrow. As I said before, it's in a pretty high traffic area, being on the intersection of 124 and 28, and being next to a school with a lot of foot traffic around the other shopping centers.

If it's good, I suspect it will be difficult to get into unless they find some clever way to get a lot of extra seating.

Of course, I am without a car this week so I likely will have to wait until next week to try it. :I

  15. The latest thing in town seems to be a place called Reina, a "Modern Latin Bistro." It's across the street from Brewer's Alley in what used to be Acacia. Website.

Run by the same group as Brewers/Isabellas/Ayse/Pistarros.

Stopped in once for brunch and tried out a few things, but I need to go back with a few more people to get a better idea on the rest of the menu. Initial impression is positive, and the outdoor seating area is pretty nice.

  16. Nice location, tons of car and foot traffic, school nearby, and directly on my route home from work :D

    Hope it's good!

Update from their ad on craigslist:

We are searching for a handful of talented wait staff for the highly anticipated Inferno Pizzeria Napoletana near Gaithersburg, MD. Acclaimed chef Tony Conte is starting the 40 seat restaurant with a projected opening in mid-September. We will be serving VPN certified Naples style pizza along with half dozen appetizers and a couple entrees that will change weekly. The food will be an evolution of what he accomplished at the Oval Room for the last eight years

So there you go, should be opening in a few weeks hopefully.
