It sounds more like he invented sparkling cider than Champagne. Dom Perignon employed the new, thicker glass that finally withstood the winter and spring re-fermentation in the bottle.

Very true. If only the British were growing grapes back in those cold dreary hillsides back in the 1600's they could lay some claim the issue.
