  1. We have a friend over, so I made Spanish ribs in the Instant Pot.  It's chilly today, so I chopped up the 2 butternut squash that have been sitting on the counter and roasted them with a spice mix that I got from Colonial Williamsburg far too long ago.  The ribs were great, no sauce needed and the squash was the right side for the meal.  Our friend doesn't like leftovers, but I do and there's just enough ribs and squash leftover for 1 more serving.

  2. Last night was too nice to not grill.  I didn't have any particular plan but I did have chicken breasts and shishito peppers.  Peppers got tossed in olive oil and then sprinkled with salt.  I sliced 2 small breasts in half so they'd cook faster, and seasoned them with a lemon-pepper mixture.  Put those on one side of the grill and peppers on the other.  Once the peppers were done, I left the chicken for a bit longer while I got out the salad ingredients.  While the chicken rested, I built the salads.  We had some leftover bean sprouts and shredded carrots so those went in, along with cucumber, celery, radishes and romaine lettuce.  Chopped up the chicken, added it to the salad and made myself stop nibbling on the peppers until my husband came back from his walk.  The peppers were great, and the salad was delicious.

It was roasted chicken night. Roasted and glazed with an onion sage jam that I had forgotten we had 6 4oz jars left of. Then mushrooms and potatoes in a cream sauce. Also, salad. And biscuits.  Quite tasty. Oh, and I had maple cream to put on the biscuits.

    Later, ice cream.

(Yes, it is my annual sort and purge the house season. In the process we always find food things that we had forgotten we had. What ARE we going to do with 12 4oz jars of blackberry jalepeno jam?)

If you like making bread, I bet both of those would taste good in a swirl bread.

  4. Last night was pizza. Earlier in the day, we made BBQ pulled mushrooms using oyster mushrooms from our Misfits box.  We had small amounts of shredded gouda, cheddar and mozzarella cheese, so I used all 3 on the pizza. We didn't have any open jars of tomato sauce but we did have the BBQ sauce, so I drizzled that on the dough, then topped with the mushrooms and cheese.  My husband would have preferred a bit more sauce but I thought it turned out very well.

  5. Dinner last night and quite delicious: http://www.notquitenigella.com/2020/08/10/sushi-bake-recipe/. Makes a huge amount of food, we'll get at least 5 meals out of this pan.  We also made this for dessert:   https://aprettylifeinthesuburbs.com/cupids-cloud-a-valentines-day-dessert/ and had these cheesecake bars today. My husband isn't a fan of food coloring so he blitzed some frozen berries and added them to the cheesecake mixture for the swirl and I quite approved of this change.

  6. Last night the plan was to do mushroom tacos.   Due to a grocery ordering mishap, I ended up with 4 oz. of mushrooms, instead of 14.  Also, Vidalia onions instead of yellow onions and all of my avocados were firmer than I wanted.  But continuing right along, I cut the recipe in half and we each ended up with 1 tasty taco.  I made the salsa first (halved this as well) and while it's like no other salsa I've had before, it's absolutely delicious and we ate quite a bit of it just with tortilla chips.  I had a small amount leftover that went in the fridge and unlike other sauces that linger in the fridge after the recipe is made, I suspect this one won't last much past today.

  7. Last night was spaghetti with sausage marinara sauce. My husband wanted to try a variant garlic bread so he made garlic butter pull-apart bread.  Pretty tasty and if you aren't going for the toasty crunch, it's really good.

Today was an old favorite version of shepherd pie.  Hubby made it, so it's a little spicier this time but still tasty. We had some instant potato mix in the pantry from a camping trip, so used that quite successfully.

Do you ever feel underappreciated as the cook? It is such a shame that I have a house of bland, unadventuresome eaters. Last night I made SeriousEats Smashed Sunchokes from our CSA cooked in butter with fresh thyme (delicious and different, but only I ate them), tilapia sauteed with white wine and butter sauce with lots of fresh dill and parsley (my wife did like this one FWIW), and stir fried napa cabbage with sesame oil, garlic, ginger, pickled red chilis, onions (it wasn't very spicy at all but again only eaten by me). The others mostly ate old challah bread and fish sticks with plain steamed broccoli. I just can't with eating the same boring bland food every week but it is what the family wants. Remind me to never open a restaurant I would be so sad when the boring items are the most popular.

On a related note - anyone has good but crowd pleaser recipes for beets, cabbage, turnips, or radishes? We get all of these uncommon vegetables for us in the CSA and I'm the only one who eats them.

BTW - David Liebowitz's pickled radish recipe is awesome.

Have you tried making okonomiyaki or will they eat coleslaw?  My husband isn't a fan of beets or cabbage either, which partially contributed to us moving away from CSAs and toward Misfits Market.  We have tossed diced turnips, radishes and beets onto sheet pans with potatoes, squash, etc and roasted them.  Little salt and pepper, not too complicated, but a tasty side for almost anything.   If you mix them with potatoes, could you do mashed turnips?  I'm a fan of pickles, so I make up quick pickles and then slowly eat them on sandwiches.  I've made this recipe with daikons, carrots and cucumbers and it'll last for a couple of months in the fridge.

We didn't grill it, but we did this Honey Sriracha Chicken pizza with the third dough ball.  We both liked it, and I've added it to my list to try on naan pizza when the weather is warmer.

  9. For week 2 we decided to try Baan Siam's menu.  From an ordering perspective, they get high kudos.  Easy to order, got a text when the food was ready and was able to do curbside pick-up. For our meal, we got the Pineapple Chicken Bites and Chicken Tapioca Dumplings as starters, Papaya curry with chicken and Shrimp stir-fried with spicy shrimp paste as our mains, Kanom Krok for dessert and the Frozen Lychee and White Lotus Slushy as our drinks.  The only disappointment was the chicken was overcooked, which was surprising as the shrimp was perfectly cooked.  The other elements in the papaya curry were very good though.  I was very curious about the dumplings as I always like to try new things that are intentionally gluten-free.  I really liked both the taste and the texture of these, and we both enjoyed them a bit more than the chicken bites.   The Kanom Krok was also new to the both of us, so we had to try a Thai dessert that wasn't mango and sticky rice.  These little balls of coconut enjoyment were a very good way to end our meal and we both really liked our drinks.  I avoided the soups and deep-fried menu options as I had a bit of a drive home but definitely would recommend the restaurant and look forward to trying more of their offerings in the future.
