  1. Longshot but if anyone knows, you all do.

Will be flying into Birmingham Sunday night and am staying in Hoover for early morning meetings in Montgomery on Monday morning.  Dining solo.  If there are any viable options in or near Hoover (I'll have a car but don't want to venture too far), I'm game.  Thanks.

  2. What about street parking in the neighborhood?  I don't think it's all restricted around there.  But it will be interesting once The Italian Store opens.

I'm so steamed about the parking at Lee-Harrison.  Today, after the Peter Chang lunch (organized here), I had to climb into my car from the passenger side IN A SKIRT.  The person who parked on the driver side parked so close to me that I couldn't get in my car.  I will not go there on a weekend, ever.  I hate that parking lot . . .

And I will try the blueberry - thanks.  But that's a pricey cup of joe.

  3. I used to travel to Harrisburg regularly for my old job and always stopped here on the way back.  Love the pies - I get the frozen ones.  Very reasonably priced.  Their apple dumplings are good too.  And, of course, the fruit.  I don't miss that job but I do miss this place.

  4. At my desk craving sushi and had no idea where to go for take out.  Google search and this place came up.  Website offered lunch special - $9.95 for three rolls.  I'm game so I head over - crazy strip of haphazard stores facing Shady Grove Road on one side, this place around the corner facing Gaither Road.

Ordered yellowtail roll, Philadelphia Roll and Spicy White Tuna roll.  Got some eel nigiri too.

I'm no sushi expert but the fish was fresh, rolls presented nicely and held together well, and the eel nigiri provided generous portions.  I thought the yellowtail roll was kind of small so I'll stick to nigiri yellowtail next time.

Staff was friendly and restaurant area had a few lunch patrons on a rainy day.  I'll go again for sure.

  5. I meant to post this before but life . . .

I celebrated a significant birthday here almost 2 weeks ago.  While I did not organize the event, my dear friend did and said the management was amazing - over the top helpful.  There were about 40 or so people around the bar tables that were reserved for us.  No complaints, no hassles.

As for the food, I never sat down to eat a meal but things were passed to me during the night - the parmesan tater tots, some excellent mussels and really good bread (my cousin was ensuring that I wouldn't be too sloshed - hence, the bread. It worked).

I love the setting and the proximity to my house - I plan to visit on a regular night soon.

  6. Ate at the Mosaic District location last week - I like that the front windows open so you can sit at the bar-like seating and be partially outside on a nice day. Don't remember which salad I had but it was delicious, fresh and free - it was my birthday, I mentioned that while the preparers were making my salad and they said "Lunch is on us!" Making me a customer for life.

  7. Ah Garretts;  my first "local" in DC the summer of 1987, before I knew better.  Never ate there, would get faced nearly every Friday afternoon after the last law class at GW, drinking pints of Rolling Rock.  Would slip the bartender 5 bucks to play the new alternative cassette I had just purchased at Tower Records.  My buddies and I would stagger out of there around 8 o'clock, grab a couple of slices at the disgusting pizza takeout place on M Street with the bouncer standing in front, and stagger across the bridge to Arlington.   Glory days

And that bartender may have been my law school classmate/friend Chris who worked there to make coin for tuition.  Spent many an evening there as well, free shots included.

  8. I'm taking her out in DC, she's taking me out in Baltimore (and she'll pick that one).

I originally thought Fiola but now there are so many options and I'm so out of the loop (thanks, kid).  I trust DRers to steer me in the right direction.  I loved my one meal at Fiola but I know there are so many good options now.

I'd prefer somewhere that takes reservations.  It's for a Friday night at the end of the month.

    Thanks, Nancy
