  1. This is going off on a tangent but since OpenTable has already been mentioned -- I am surprised how often I do show up for a reservation, dine as scheduled and a few days later receive an email informing me that I was a no show. How hard is it to check the box on the OT front end?

  2. I'm comparing a Hacker-Pschorr Munich purchased at German Gourmet with a Scrimshaw Pilsner purchased at Lost Dog Cafe. The Hacker-Pschorr is fresh and interesting; the Scrimshaw is yogurt-smelling and moribund. To restate the obvious: Treatment from brewery to refrigerator accounts for quite a bit - there's no question in my mind that the Scrimshaw is damaged.

I had a few Scrimshaws the the other night. It's not damaged, it just sucks.

  3. From the department of oh-yeah-it-was-totally-their-fault-dude:

Washington, D.C.: I went to Farrah Olivia last week and ordered the pork tenderloin and the waiter asked me how I wanted it done. I thought pork was like chicken and had to be cooked all the way through. I asked for it well done. Anyhow,it was rubbery and flavorless and I couldn't eat it. I get the feeling that restaurants during RW make ahead the three dishes they will offer and they sit under a heat lamp in the kitchen for too long...
  4. Le Soir in Newton Highlands, which was a very good neighborhood restaurant, has been replaced by 51 Lincoln, which is a very good neighborhood restaurant.

Irrelevant detail. According to FBI crime statistics, Newton was the safest city in America in 2003, 2004 and 2005. It fell to fourth place in 2006, though, after a resident merging onto Rt. 9 gave another driver the finger.

  5. I spent many happy days patronizing Eetcafe Het Molenpad (Prinsengracht 653) in the late 90s.

Restaurant D'Theeboom on the Singel was pretty reliable back then. Hardly a fresh review, of course.

Kantjil & de Tijger on the Spuistraat was always good for a quick Indonesian lunch near the center of town. It's also more or less across the street from Hoppe, one of the better gin tasting bars (proeflokalen). Tempo Doeloe on the Utrechtsestraat used to be held to be the best Indonesian food on offer, as I recall.

If you just want to drink some good beer, try In de Wildeman on the Kolksteeg. Even has a no smoking (anything) section.

Some of the better brothels also serve surprisingly good food. It is said.
