  1. It's a little obnoxious. What percentage of their customer base is families? We'd rather take our kids to restaurants where they are welcome, not tolerated.

A very significant percentage. Why? Because they've always been very, very, very accommodating to children and to parents who want to eat well accompanied by their children. Probably more so, I would venture, than any other DC restaurant of even vaguely comparable quality. But don't let their unimpeachable past track record stop you from completely writing them off based on an unsourced report by a no-name blogger about what they may or may not be planning to do in the future.

  2. How's this for etiquette? Our 2-year-old is an uncanny mimic and, as a result, we try hard to model politeness when the family eats together at home. This has some unexpected side effects when eating out, though. A few days ago, the two of us stopped at a local diner for lunch:

Waitress: "Would either of you gentlemen like more juice?"

    Toddler: "No thanks, honey."

    Dad and Waitress: "!!!???"

Waitress: "Well, you're pretty smooth for a little guy."

Dad: "He gets it from me."

    Waitress: "Clearly not."

Toddler: "I cool dude! That's right!"

We definitely got an extra scoop of icecream with our dessert.

  3. Hey, I never even saw this thread.

The Mrs. and I decided to detox and refit in January, too. We're eating lean protein and rabbit food, mostly, and have gone strictly teetotal for the duration.

So far, the dieting hasn't really bothered me, but I don't much like the bugs crawling around under my skin.

PS: Dare I ask wtf is going on in the forum section associated with this particular topic?

  4. Sorry to be a wet blanket, but I think it's a lousy idea and every bit as pointless a gimmick as -- oh, I don't know -- say assigning absolute point scores to wine and claiming that's any useful indication of the relative quality of a 92-point Aussie Shiraz versus a 91-point Sancerre. Hey, it's just another way of sorting out a crowded field. :P

Seriously, what's wrong with simply telling people that 2Amys is a very good Italian place and Thai Square is a very good Thai place? Why does anyone have to sit around a conference table pounding Diet Coke and fretting over whether it is the pizza or the pad phrik that most closely approaches the Platonic ideal?

  5. Thanks for these recommendations. I'll be heading to Boston's western 'burbs (Natick, Framingham, and the Newtons) and need to have suggestions for two dinners so I won't end up at the Natick Legal Seafood (won't have time to get into Boston proper). In addition to Le Soir & Sichuan Gourmet, I have these – please help me fine tune:

    Lumière, West Newton

    Blue Ginger, Wellesley

Sorry, I missed this. If the trip hasn't already taken place, you might also consider Oga's in Natick, off Route 9 just past Natick Mall. Among Boston's best sushi places.

Lumiere is very good, by most reports. Blue Ginger can be good, but is noticeably on cruise control and is almost impossible to get in to on any kind of shortish notice.

PS: The Figs in Wellesley has closed and is to be replaced with another tony, Italian, Michael Schlow venture called Alta Strada.
