  1. Ooo, this is a good idea. On the Italian Store, I would personally quibble with the Milano - I think the Roma is more interesting with the prosciutto base, but it's one of the bigger salt bombs there (!) so it's probably not a sandwich for everyone.

I love A. Litteri's subs and some of the sandwiches from So's Your Mom, but don't feel qualified to name "bests" so maybe someone else can?

  2. Sadly (for those of us who grew up on the LES), Guss has moved their operation to Brooklyn. We visited sometime last year, and it is definitely more geared towards distribution, rather than retail, but they were quite happy to see me come in to their barrel-lined stark white outer area buy a few quarts.

If I could recreate their garlic sours, I'd be in heaven, so I'm looking forward to trying No1Sons.

  3. My +1 and I walked in to the bar for drinks and dinner (as we try to do every few weeks), and who's standing there behind the bar but Chris Cunningham! He said he'd been there about 2 weeks. We are quiet, background devotees of his drinks from previous locations; my +1 mentioned one she'd had (I can't remember what it was), and he grinned and said brightly, "hey, how about a rickey!" She was happy with all three of them. After a glass of wine, I asked him to make me an interesting gin drink, nothing sweet, and he came back with a tasty black raspberry basil gin fizz. The food included the fish and chips, which had some perfectly fried, sweet scallops; the pork spring rolls and mussels with chorizo; and the caesar, which includes grated smoked gouda, was good enough to make my +1, who hates smoked cheese, reconsider that whole idea of splitting dishes. Dessert was the double chocolate cake.

We're happy to have Chris in the neighborhood.

  4. What's not to love about the $30 bar dinner? Absolutely nothing. Last night, we were looking for a good way to kick off the holiday weekend, and realized we hadn't been to Corduroy in a while. Shame on us. Sat at the bar and had a great time drinking sazeracs and cucumber gin fizzes made by Deanna. Dinner was an ethereal chilled spring pea soup; softshell crab for the +1, faux ribeye for me (very tender for a shoulder cut, great flavor); the sorbet trio (strawberry, grapefruit, and mango) and pistachio bread pudding. We also got to taste the High West 7000 vodka, made from oatmeal with notes of caramel - really - and Whistlepig rye. We vowed to return more regularly, and then we promptly fell into food coma.

  5. Manhattans. which don't go with the rest of the meal but were great nevertheless

Enchiladas with chicken (simmered in an improvised chili broth that got reduced to become the sauce), goat cheese, and black beans

Rajas poblanos, except we had no poblanos and subbed in anaheims and red bell pepper instead

    Halloween candy :x

  6. My +1 and I are trying to eat less meat, so I'd really be interested in getting this book, but one question, based on the dishes mentioned - are there a lot of eggplant-containing recipes in it? I ask because we are two of the apparently miniscule population of eggplant-haters. And I mean hate; even if it's chopped up and hidden in tomato sauce and other vegetables, we can tell it's in there...

  7. Appetizer: remaining Sour Patch Kids from the bag I bought last weekend

Cod with North African flavors (from the NY Times - it calls for halibut, I only had cod) - this was a good way to use the preserved lemons and various olives that have been sitting in the fridge for a while

Israeli couscous tabbouleh-style - this recipe accompanied the fish recipe and was a good way to use the parsley and mint in the fridge...I was obviously looking to clean out a bit

    Steamed broccoli

  8. This doesn't beat pork/provolone/rabe in any way, but if you take I-295 instead of the Turnpike after the Delaware Memorial Bridge, there are two Wegmans (I believe exits 34 and 40, or somewhere thereabouts, but one is much closer to the offramp) where we usually pick up stuff from the prepared food amusement park. :)

  9. I imagine other posts seem to have many dishes because 2 or 3 people are dining leading to descriptions of 8 or 12 dishes. Bring solo, it's "just" the 4 and dessert.

That is definitely part of the reason, but I think Joe H had the 8-10 course tasting menu, which was described to us and is obviously a non-DR-deal option. For the record, the 4+dessert option stuffed 3 of us healthy eaters, who ate breakfast around 10, had a light snack around 3, and then ate at 6:45. BTW, the chestnut soup is amazing and incredibly filling, so if you get it, make sure your other courses are light. The pancetta-wrapped monkfish was moist and flavorful. I enjoyed the veal medallions, although now I wish I had tried the branzino, but I have no real regrets - I think it's difficult to go completely wrong right now. They're obviously trying very hard. As others have noted, the service was quite gracious, and an error on the check was quickly fixed. Roberto's wife walking around chatting with the tables in her gorgeous Italian boots was also a highlight. :(

  10. We missed District Taco's closing time at the Courthouse Farmers' Market by justthismuch, so after some hand-wringing (I *really* wanted tacos) and research, we hit this truck. We were not disappointed. The offerings haven't expanded, but boy, they hit the spot. We tried the al pastor, asada, chorizo, and chicken. They come with onion and cilantro, with cucumber, radish, and lime on the side, plus a spicy red salsa and a tomatillo salsa. The gentleman cooking them had trouble remembering how many we had ordered of each, so I was the lucky recipient of a bonus al pastor to eat while we waited - perfect, since I was starving. The chicken was a little dry, but was fine after the tomatillo salsa and some lime. For $16, this was a great lunch.

  11. Dang, I still have one of those Groupon certificates(purchased on Aug 18) - thankfully it only costs $10.

Groupon will refund your money - we had the same issue when Posh closed. I can't remember if we contacted them or they contacted us, but it doesn't hurt to drop them a note.

  12. Bridge Kitchenware is having an enormous sale. It seems to have been going on for a while (all the standard size cake pans are gone), but there are still bargains to be found.

You know not what you have wrought in my household. :)

Does anyone have the Cuisinart Smart Power Blender, and is it worth it at $70?

  13. Yep. It's also disgusting when they get called "athletes." It's the whole culture of wanting to be famous for something, and it just doesn't matter what that something is. Glorifying the stuffing of one's face, while multitudes of people are getting by on very little to eat every day, or every other day, is just awful.

It's also just disgusting to watch, if that was the original intent of this thread...
