in general I agree with her picks although her diss of Komi is not likely to endear herself to many

If you read the rest of the piece it's the economy.
Interesting.....I wonder if someone could tempt him back to the DC area - economy is still pretty solid here judging by the crowds when we've eaten out lately.

Hi all:
Traveling to Monticello today and wondering if anyone has any recent reports? General parameters....good food, decent prices that can accomodate a picky father, a garlic allergic mother and an, um, rambunctious 2 year old.....easy right!
Right now I am thinking Shebeen.....

Just a reminder that the new season starts tomorrow night (Wed, Nov. 12) on Bravo at 10 pm.
What did people think? I know its hard to tell from one episode but to me they generally seemed to be of a lower caliber than previous seasons.

ordered some of these last week - very, very good - hard to pick a favorite but if I had to it would be either the passionfruit or the chocolate - having pick-up at Artisan makes it very convenient

Ours has not been quite so severe, but it has definitely not been a good year for tomatoes. Probably 1/4 of the crop size we had last year.
Zucchini and cucumber, however, have more than doubled from last year's crop.
interesting - lucky for me I am having the oppostite experience from many posters this year - in fact I'd go as far as to say this may be my best year ever for tomatoes (and other veggies). Mine started ripening nicely 2-3 weeks ago and its been a tomato fest ever since - probably gotten at least 30-40 large tomatoes with another 20-30 still ripening (from 8 or 9 plants).....interestingly, my cherry tomatoes which are normally very reliable wern't great this year with only one plant producing in the way it should....also awash in jalapenos, serranos and several types of sweet peppers
Sept/Oct will bring butternut squash and pumpkins. I must try cucumber next year.
eggplants were a little dissapointing this year though

I was in a mad rush and went to Indiclub and had their $10 lunch buffet - well worth the trip - thanks again for the tip Jamie

thanks! this is a treasure trove of info

I have a meeting finishing up around 12.30 in Woodlawn, Maryland, just off 695 west of Baltimore. Seems like lunch options are limited to chain restaurants but thought I'd throw it out there in case theres a hidden gem close by

Last summer, Jose Andres posted his gazpacho recipe in about a billion places online.
Here's one. I haven't made it yet, but within days the garden will produce just about every ingredient necessary, and I definitely plan on giving it a whirl.
we tried this last night - simple and quick to make and was delicious - had the leftovers for lunch today - theres something incredibly satisfying about making something primarily with produce from your own garden

strolled by at lunchtime....probably 50 people in line

CF Folks are serving up a kickass BLT these days....I am going to be sad when tomato season is over

Indeed - absolutely a wonderful dinner and excellent company. Special thanks to Walrus and Tripewriter for organzing it all.
Who knew a Wolverine could prepare such an exquisite meal?
I'd like to echo everyone elses thanks and raves about the dinner. Special thanks to the wonderful, wonderful servers....they were fantastic

yup, noticed that tonight as I drove by - doors open, people inside and what looked like a couple of flat screen tvs on
ETA: missed Don's post but I don't think a menu with a $15 burger is necessarily a recipe for success in that space

Apologies for intervening in the burger mania but wanted to report on a delightful little lunch I had at Biriyani Corner, on P St near Dupont Circle. As they name might imply, biriyani is their specialty and I tried the Lamb Biriyani which was incredibly tasty - loads of fragrant rice studded with almonds and 6/7 tender chunks of lamb for $7.95. I treasured every bite!
Well worth a try for anyone living or working in the Dupont area. There are other non-biriyani items on the menu which might be worth exploring.

looks like DC loaned the place 500k to get up and running and it still only lasted 5 months
-
wow, less than 9 months

They deliver? I didn't see that on their Web site. Any chance they come all the way to Adams Morgan??
I called and asked about delivery and was told delivery was to immediate vicinity/Petworth only, "unless its a large order". Its probably on a case by case basis....

even though my dumb ass couldn't find the menu link last week, it did manage to track down the phone number for Moroni last Friday.....
....ordered 4 pizzas, some pupusas and some tamales....they offered to deliver to Upper Caucasia despite it being outside their delivery zone
Pizzas arrived piping hot and in great shape - Waitman is right - these are a contender for best in show here in DC, beautiful thin crust, tasty toppings....the only one that struck a bit of a sour note was the Puttanesca which was too garlicky and too hot peppery although that may be an individual taste issue, the La Capra with Spinach, garlic, goat cheese and onions was delicious
Pupusas were ok
Tamales were incredible....easily the best tamales I've had in years
These guys are absolutely worth a try.

stopped by DiBaggios this week - it was actually only about 30 mins from downtown with no traffic - I would estimate they had at least 40-50 different tomato varieties, same for peppers, 10-15 eggplant varieties, 10-15 basil
the place is a treasure!
I've been lax and haven't made it to a farmer's market yet. I'm not sure the ones I go to have even started yet. I have to go to Home Depot anyway, so I will check there. DeBaggio's is a huge trek for me - there's just no good way to get there from here! I've been there a couple of times and it was really good for unusual plants. I bought several of their scented geraniums. I may give them a call. Thanks! -
I 'think' I recall a previous article where it was noted that this would have no impact on the second location as there was no process for DC to recover monies owed from another taxing jurisdiction

Chicago, IL
in The Intrepid Traveler

Was in Chicago last week and ventured out to Kuma's. I'd generally agree with the above poster. Even on a BRUTALLY cold Tuesday night they were busy, with an estimated 1 hour wait for a table. We managed to snag some seats at the bar after about 10 minutes so were lucky. One thing that really stood out for me was the staff - they were some of the most delightful people I have ever come in total contrast to say, the staff at The Big Hunt who are a bunch of surly, unrepentant jerks (not some random slam - I see them as similar outfits in different cities). Burger (Bongzilla, how the hell am I gonna get that one past accounting?) took forever and was good but cooked a little more than I had indicated. Beer was outstanding, I had a 3 Floyds something or other, a local imperial stout, and Big Bear stout. Overall vibe was just great - music was incredible and the advantage of sitting at the bar was they took requests, so munched away to the sounds of Big Black, Ministry and Minor Threat among others.
