  1. They used to have Rocky Mountain Oysters at the Rocky Mountain Diner but a quick review shows that they are no longer there  . They make a very fine Huevos Rancheros, the Turkey Posole is pretty good, the Pan Roasted Chicken is also quite tasty. For your friend they have Buffalo Meatloaf. My favorite thing about this place is the home-made lemonade. Very localcentric especially at lunch and happy hour.

  2. I don't remember the reason for Gerard's closing, but Galileo and CK both closed because their landlords renovated their buildings and evicted them, not because of a lack of patrons due to food or service issues. Whether or not they had issues, that just wasn't the reason they closed, as your post implies.
I can't say I was a fan of Galileo (not the Lab) prior to its closing and CK never floated my boat (but really that's all about me). Gerard's restaurant disappointed more often than not, sadly because the shimmer of deliciousness remained evident in may dishes but never broke through to the surface regularly enough to risk my budget.

My most recent meals at Vidalia have not disappointed at all, most have consisted of bar eating not table service. I didn't detect the over butterfication mentioned in an earlier post. I have not been blown away by the wines available by the glass at the bar btw. But I generally drink crappy wine so ymmv.

  3. Nothing terribly wrong with this place. The staff has always been pleasant, on occasion the live guitar music has been spectacular and the food average to better than average. Prices, if my memory serves were in line with service & food. I haven't been by in about a year but it was kind of my go to place when Waitman wanted to shop and I would rather not.

I'd go back again. They seem to have a weekend brunch but I have not tried that.

  4. Omakase blow out at Sushi Ko?

Waitman and I had a stupendous spur of the moment visit there last week and I want (but can't afford) MORE!

I love the ambiance and food at Komi but it's just way too much for me and my pathetic appetite. I always leave feeling overstuffed and guilty.

The chef's table at Teatro was a blast, we celebrated 3 birthdays that night. I was as usual, overwhelmed by the food but the experience was delightful.

  5. Crock pot experiment. Trinity + 1 diced carrot, 4 bay leaves, dried thyme, garlic, 1 lb Salavdorean red beans 1.5-2 lbs smoked pork necks, water to cover. Cooked 4 hours yesterday, slowly reheating on low now.

If this works I will be pretty pleased. Smells good, no muss, no fuss and 1st time putting crock pot to the task for which it was created.

I will also get to use the fuzzy logic rice cooker that Santa was kind enough to leave under the tree. What a lovely piece of work that is!

  6. We bought a gang of lobsters at Great Wall the other day, served them on pasta in a sherry sauce, and then rendered the shells into a bisque for Christmas dinner. At these prices, it's crazy not to buy lobsters every week.

  7. My Thanksgiving goose was cooked on a grill mounted rotisserie and finished in about 3 hours. I had stuffed it with some fresh fruit (apples, oranges, cranberries, and pears), and then when it was done, I emptied the cavity into a pot added a bit more orange juice to produce a wonderfully flavorful compote. The members of my family that generally go for dark meat (including me), love the goose, those that prefer white meat, not so much. It was a fun experiment, and I hope to make another one in the near future.

If you have any leftovers they make a tasty curried soup or stew using (heaven forbid!) plain old McCormick's curry powder. I imagine it would be even better with a Jamican curry or some Garam Masala and turmeric.
