We have indulged in PNC Club seats twice this season when Scherzer was pitching.  He is the pride and joy of BL-6th grader's fantasy baseball team.  The first time, in early August, was perfect.  Great seats, and not terrible pricing if I wait to the last minute and don't bring Mr. BLB.

But the second time, on Labor Day, was less than stellar.  Tables cleared of plates of food while we were still eating. One plate removed while I was chewing.  It was miserably hot and they could not keep up with ice and cold water.  The brunch offerings weren't as good as the dinner offerings.

It was nice to have an a/c place to cool off though.  But next game we will be back in the 400s....

I do like hearing of other kids with fantasy baseball teams!

  2. Calamansi is tasty in ice tea and when squeezed on lumpia just before eating.  My dad had a calamansi tree in his yard when he lived there.

I was a teen when I visited the Philippines and I wasn't a fan of ube then (at least not as an ice cream flavor), but my palate has expanded and I definitely want to try it again.

I wonder if they do anything with rambutans there? Loved that fruit when I was a teen and I still like it. It looks like a red porcupine or spiny sea creature, and the inside tastes similar to a lychee.  I was told they weren't available in the U.S. back then, but in recent years I've seen it fresh a few times (most recently in Seattle), and canned (which I didn't care for).

I really wish he would sell off Kapnos, I really appreciated all the vegetarian options, and I liked the roast meats, it was a great compromise when dining out with picky eaters.  I wish a judge could order that the company went to "the ladies" and they would just rock it.  I know that isn't what happens, but what a loss for all the employees of all these places and the people under him who weren't apart of all this.  Haven't seen anything on all the stuff in the Liberty building in Ballston, but if one goes, assume they will all go, although I believe it is two leases (maybe three separate, but I think he did one for two places, and the other for one).

Agreed. I really liked Kapnos, and appreciated having it in Arlington when other good restaurants have closed (ah, Willow). Went to Kapnos numerous times with lots of people, but can't bring myself to go anymore.

  4. We went last night as we were in the area, and our dinner was quite good. Between us we had Braised Octopus (black garlic aioli, crispy potato), Trofie Pasta (genovese basil & Italian pine nut pesto), Cauliflower (lemon, tahini, garlic, mint), and Roasted Baby Carrots (whipped goat cheese, candied pepita). That's an appetizer, an entree, and two sides, and it was quite enough food as we did not have room for dessert (neither of us were hugely hungry to begin with).  We started with the gratis "flatbread" (really crackers) and labne (in a little circular dish like butter, and mixed with some things I can't recall other than a bit of jalepeno), which was tasty and a nice way to start. The octopus is a quite generous appetizer (I had it for a main with the two veggie sides, but shared all three with my dining companion and had some of her pasta). The potato disks were nicely crispy, the octopus (sliced rounds from the tentacles) was tender and tasty, and I avoided the little red rounds of hot peppers, though I had one octopus bite that was a bit fiery. (I definitely dislike when restaurants don't disclose the presence of hot peppers on the menu, because my husband cannot eat them in any amount or strength, but my dining companion last night didn't mind them. But if I'd gone with my husband and we'd planned to split the octopus as we've done in other places, we both would've been disgruntled.)

The pasta was homemade and had an excellent texture, and the pesto was very fresh and good. ("Pine nut pesto" seems like a retronym to me, but maybe the menu was pointing out that the pine nuts were Italian.)  It came with a couple of green beans and a couple small purple potatoes (potatoes with pasta makes me think of Big Night: "Maybe I should make mashed potato for another side!") The cauliflower was beautifully browned (it's always disappointing when roasted cauliflower is pale and underdone) and delicious, and the baby carrots were a beautiful and flavorful mix of colors, sweet, and well-prepared. All the cominations of ingredients were excellent.

  5. I really like the fresh spring rolls here (Gỏi Cuốn/Gỏi Cuốn Chay). We had an excellent dinner a month or so ago when I had those and green papaya salad with shrimp (I've never ordered that before so don't know how it compares to elsewhere, but it was very tasty). Husband likes their banh mi, son had I think grilled lemongrass beef over rice noodles and was happy, and I previously had their grilled shrimp over rice noodles and liked it a lot.

I still miss Minh's a lot, but having Four Sisters in the neighborhood helps (fewer options, of course, but everything's been good).

We've eaten there a bunch since I last posted and always been quite happy with our food. The boba tea is good, too.

We tried them a couple of times (long ago, right after Hsian Foong closed).  I liked it (esp. beef/broccoli) but my husband didn't like it.  Don't remember why and he probably doesn't either. Perhaps we ordered the lemon chicken which we loved at Hsian Foong and it was not good.  I think it is time to give them another try.  Thanks!

Ah, I still miss Hsian Foong a lot. Especially the Hsian Foong chicken and the sesame broccoli. Haven't found another place with sesame broccoli.

  7. Any recent suggestions near Arena Stage? I know sometimes people go to the Wharf, but that seems a bit risky time-wise, especially because it sounds like restaurants there may be crowded and seating could be delayed or service could be slow.

I'll probably go to Station 4 tonight, since we may have a deluge and a short walk would be smarter. But for another time, I'm looking at other options.

  8. Rosslyn will also have a middle/high school as of fall 2019, where the 8th-12th graders have off-campus privileges and a number will likely be going off-campus for lunch with some frequency. At their current location (walking distance Lee Heights), there are often students eating at the Lee Heights shops for a quick dinner before events, rehearsals, etc.

I cannot remind people enough of their upstairs, $30, 3-course at the bar - it's ridiculous. $5 cheaper than Restaurant Week, every week of the year - yes, it's a subset of the regular menu, but so what - other than Convivial, I can't think of any Restaurant Week menu in this immediate area that compares to this (Convivial really crushed Restaurant Week this year).

Is Kinship's bar menu available online anywhere? I could only find the dinner menu.
