  1. Had some truffle cheese that we acidentally let dry out a bit, so I shredded it, blended it with butter & olive oil, toasted it on Atwater walnut raising bread.

Pasta: Opera gemelli w/turnip greens, onion, garlic, rosemary, smith meadows rosemary lamb sausage, lots of parm.

    Last of the chocolate gelato

We had a bottle of 1978 Stag's leap cabernet with a low fill and we tried it to see if it had any life left. It did not. Second attempt was Valplicella I Progni Ripasso Le Salette 2001 which was spot on {well spot did not have any but he said it looked good to him.

Spot enjoyed his pizza, chow and water. He also actually moved 6 or 8 inches to eat some TJs cat treats. He managed to not bite Kay or I eating his cat treats. He is working on his aim.

He is on his third day of chewing on an old sock with catnip in it. His aim at picking up the cat treats is pretty bad the past couple of days. And he has been attacking the air and the carpet.

  2. Brisket from the freezer. This was local brisket, slow braised in red wine, onions, garlic & herbs. The braising liquid was pureed into a thick sauce.

    Japanese Soy Pickles.

Kay had a perfect try Manhattan: Old Overholt, Cocchi americano & rosa, Bitterman's Orange cream citrate bitters, The Bitter Truth Jerry Thomas bitters

I had a Gibson: Plymouth gin. Dolin Dry 4 to 3, cocktail onions, Peychaud's aromatic bitters, Bitter Truth lemon & olive bitters

Spot had complaints. Not enough Pizza. Not enough cat chow. He also won't fininsh his pizza if we don't scrape the leftover bit down to the center after his first dive into the bowl. He no longer is willing lick the bowl clean as it is undignified. He finds our waiting on him paw and paw is more dignified.

  3. Gemelli pasta with shrimp, sauteed greens, garlic.

    Chocolate gelato.

We made two otherwise identical Martinez, one with Broker's gin and the other with Hayman's Old Tom. I liked the Old Tom version better, Kay the Broker's. We also doubled the Marachino Luxardo to 1/2 oz. We used Cocchi Vermouth di Torino and next time a richer vemrouth is in order.

  4. Crudite.

Leftover Kohlrabi leaf soup w/Asiago and Fontina but no sausage. The cheese is a superb addition.

Can of Genova yellowfin tuna in olive oil w/cocktail onions, stuffed green olives, homemade mayo.

Every time e open a can now, Spot thinks is is Pizza Time for Spot and he meows loudly and blocks our steps from the klitchen to where his bowl is. Then come the dirty looks. We made a deal with him: wash the dishes and we will increase your pizza ration. So far.... He has some sort of excuses: no opposable thumbs and to fat to jump on kitchen counters. As if!

  5. Crudite & garlicky yogurt dip.

Atwater scalded rye sourdough with melted asiago & fontina and then leftover slices of grilled chicken breasts.

Kay scours Next Door and 5 mile etc for free or cheap stuff. This is her outlet now that garage sales are a thing of the past. Her latest score is a like-new Breville toaster oven for $40 which is like 20% of the price of new. This is an amazing appliance. I set it for 3 slices, medium color and it made three perfectly matched slices, exactly medium color in 4 minutes. WOW!

  6. Salad w/Barajas Romaine, anchovy, marinated artichoke heart, green & kalamata olives, canned tuna, lemon juice, olive oil, rosemary-garlic oil. Atwater bread to soak up the dressing.

Soup: kohlrabi leaves & stems {barajas} onion, guanciale, canned plum tomato crushed, beans, garlic, rosemary, mandarin zest, parsley, spice rub, lamb & rosemary sausage from Smith Meadows. Started by sweating the guanciale, onion, garlic & herbs. Added tomato & water but kept it thick. Next, I poached the sausage in the tomato, onion, guanciale & kohlrabi stem mix until they were fully cooked and then set aside. Finished the soup using water instead of any stock. Cooked the heck out of everything until both the leaves and steams of the kohlrabi were melting soft. Then sliced one sausage into our portion and froze the rest.

When we buy bunched veggies at the market the big bonus is the greens. Today's shop included not only the Kohlrabi greens, but radish greens and turnip greens as well. When you buy veggies at the market, the greens rarely are delicate enough or tender enough to cook.

The last of the St Andre. Stoned wheat thins.

Arugula w/lemon, olive oil, a drop of fish sauce, parm.

Chicken breast marinated in shiokoji, fish sauce, dusted with toasted cumin powder. Grilled on the YakiNiku grill.

Vinco Biancoperso Bianco. Orange wine with a touch of fizz.

  9. Crudite & salsa verde

    Left over greens soup w/tomato.

    Marinated Beets from Barajan {candy stripe w/champagne vinegar & olive oil, golden beets w/lime, tangerine & sesame oil, red beets w/red wine vinegar * olive oil}

We are looking forward to the protection of our watch cat. He will strike fear in the hearts of any burglar by sneering at them. Or make them feel left out when he ignores them completely. That is if he even wakes up!

That is if he wakes up when they break and enter. Maybe if we can convince the burglars to carry a bag of Trader Joe's cat treats.

I went here on Jan 4 for dinner, and it was intensely mediocre.

This is one of the worst, most egregiously priced drinks lists in the city - we had a beer.

The pet nat sparkling Birichino Malvasia Bianco wholesales for $12.67 {2018 vintage, they listed 2017} and they were selling it for 68. 5 times + markup?

My last meal at Ssam bar was so disappointing & so ridiculously expensive it was my last meal at any Momofuku restaurant. My first at Ssam Bar was revelatory even though it was ridiculously expensive.

Have you ever had it fresh at the store?  The reason I ask is that I grew up eating their pizza (circa late 60s) and it tastes nothing now like the pizza I had as a kid.  I'm not saying the current pizza is bad (although I tried a slice maybe 10 years ago and it wasn't great), it's different.  I used to have a slice and a coke before enjoying a movie at the Midwood Theater.  Maybe there was a different pizza place nearby and I'm thinking of that place.  We always called it Avenue J pizza and then it was the best pizza.  I didn't even know its name until my sister said it was showing up in the Zagat's guide.

Not to cast aspersions, but something else may have changed since the late 60's

I know I havent changed since the late 70's. 😭
