  1. [i'd like to point out to the people who read this website about once a week, and comment about once a month, that this so-called "sacred cow" is being excoriated for their Scotch Egg, with no pushback whatsoever from members. Read a little more closely next time before bringing up the false notion of "sacred cow" which is utter (pun intended) bull (pun intended) shit. Yes, there is slack being cut here, and even some "oh golly gee, Michael," etc. because savvy restaurateurs wisely engage and embrace the community, but, well ... duh.]

To pile on a little bit...

The lack of pushback also has a great deal to do with the respect accorded someone who has been here from the start and whose track record can be seen over 3000 + posts. And that's not even getting into having a reasonable complaint. :)

  2. Way to welcome the new guy by outing his face from the get-go, Joe Yonan. :)

Congrats to Tim Carman, to the Post for landing such a talent, and to the rest of us for keeping him here in DC!

Oh my god! I always knew that Tim was secretly Wylie Dufresne! It's the glasses that give it away.

In other news, I'm impressed by Don's ability to dig up a 3 year old story that Steve can link to a 5 year old tempest.

PS - Someone is still an ass and always will be. You figure out who it is.

  3. Closing up the last of my work and getting ready for the Turkey Day prep list.

    1)Turkey

2)Stuffing (now that I've been shamed by xcanuck into preparing some)

3)green beans in a preparation to be determined later

    4)biscuits

    5)cranberry sauce

    6)gravy

The drinks have been purchased (some inexpensive bubbles to start, Riesling, and Beaujolais)

I've got a guest bringing some hors d'ouevres.

Another guest bringing a mystery potato dish.

I'll clean the house this afternoon and start on making stock for gravy. Put the bird in brine before bed and stash it in the beer fridge.

The biscuits are my nemesis. I can never get them as light and airy as I want.

  4. Just a report that the mapo tofu I had for lunch today was excellent. The right amount of heat to just make you start sweating and just enough szechuan peppercorn to give you a tingle (apologies to Chris Matthews) without blowing out your tastebuds.

Their lunch special menu at $6.50/$7.50 for an entree and cup o' soup remains one of the better deals around Rockville Pike and why I'm in there once a week for lunch.

  5. My favorite soup of all time to make at home remains the Squash Soup from TKeller's "Bouchon" as adapted in the Sunday NYT magazine on 12/12/2004.

My copy is extremely yellowed (in addition to the yellowish squash soup stains) and wrinkled, but I'd be extremely put out if I lost it.

  6. Would that be the one at Montrose Crossing? (where the Super Giant and Sports Authority are) Never heard it referenced that way. Makes sense though.

Yep. I've been wandering around Rockville Pike on and off for almost a decade. One day a few months ago I left a client meeting and, in my utter lack of haste to get back to the office, went exploring. I saw the logo on a sign no more than 2 feet high and said to myself, "WTF? There's no Target here!" Sure enough I found it and proved myself wrong.

If you're on Rockville Pike, it's invisible. So I stole the name from the Secret Safeway.

  7. I drove around RTC today as I was on Rockville Pike and I read this thread last night. Just my 2ยข and I am probably stating the obvious but . . . things don't look too promising there. Lots of for rent signs at RTC and nearby. Bobby's and Gifford's are probably the most discussed ones on this board but there seem to be pretty many other vacancies along North Washington Street not in RTC. Also note that Harris Teeter is now at 270 and Montrose Rd. in a place called "Park Potomac Luxury Community". This is a relatively big store, relatively close to RTC with easy access and parking. At the risk of overstating the obvious, I tend to think that the Rockville area in general is overbuilt right now and it will take some time before there is enough demand for all of the shops and restaurants at RTC. Personally, I have always enjoyed the two Asian grocery stores which have been near RTC for a pretty long time. One is on 355, the other is on N. Washington. Also a little further up 355 is a nice place called Mama Wok & Teriyaki. It has been there for a very long time and has a sister store on 28 which I have not visited. The one on 355 is next to a gun store, but I am probably getting way too far off topic.

    JMac,

That HT is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to supermarkets around Rockville. Off the top of my head I can think of at least 1 Safeway, 2 Giants, the secret Target, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Shopper's Food Warehouse, and Rodman's that are on or near 355 within a couple of miles of the downtown. Plus the Whole Foods, which is a tiny store by their standards is moving to a new, bigger spot. In addition to Patel Bros. and Maxim, there are several ethnic food retailers along the Pike as well.

  8. I don't think I've seen reported on the site that Matchbox will be opening another location this year in Rockville in Congressional Plaza. It will be in that cursed spot where the likes of That's Amore, Shelley's Woodroast and PGA have failed. The existing structure will be torn down and a multi-level restaurant with outdoor decks will be built. Seems like good news for MontCo as well as this site that can't seem to work out for some reason.

I had initially missed this, but just saw pizzandbrew's post looking for chefs in the help wanted section. always nice to have another lunch spot close to the office.

Pizzaandbrew - Any guesstimates as to opening day?

  9. ETA Again: Um, it seems one of the ingredients I used was not safe as I didn't realize Fish Sauce has to be refrigerated. Live and learn and realize I need to take a food safety class.

    ? No, it doesn't. It's already fermented.

  10. Well ... we'll see. This is Rockville (actually Kensington) we're talking about. For some reason, you can't keep people away from P.F. Chang's China BStro or the FatCake Factory.

No, I'm not exactly a fan. To put it politely. :-)

According to the post office, it's actually North Bethesda. ; )

Only a short drive to Joe's Noodle House and A&J which I think will continue to be more popular than Seasons 52 when it finally opens.

FWIW - Exterior work on the project is basically complete and they are moving on to the interior build outs. I, for one, am more excited about having the new Whole Paycheck and LA Fitness within walking distance of my office than the restaurants that are coming.

  11. A second to both tfbrennan's suggestion (love Samantha's papusas) and heather's suggestion (especially the non-mex dishes and the seafood at el Golfo. (They also own the fish shop in the same building whose entrance is off the parking lot)).

The only positive to mi Rancho is the huge covered outdoor patio.

  12. Create a "Dairy Police" uniform, hit your local university dorms/frats/sorors and proclaim a raid. Promise that there will be no fines or criminal proceedings involved as long as they return all of the contraband crates in their possession. Start underground side business selling the excess that you will gather.
