  1. I also stopped by yesterday. They had the cuppies which are like cute little tarts and pies by the slice as well as beverages. To me the cuppie priced at $4.00 was less than half the size of the slices which were quite generous in size and cost $5.50. At the time I thought wow, it is a much better deal to get a slice. I bought a cherry cuppy or cuppie or whatever and a slice of bourbon pecan chocolate (BPC) pie. The BPC was incrediably rich and I cut it into thirds. You could taste the bourbon and the mix with the chocolate was just great. However, it tastes like an uber calorie splurge and that was just eating 1/3 of it. Today I ate the cherry cuppie/y and I loved it. The crust was flakey and yummy. So I can see why someone might want to get a cuppie/y since the crust/filling ratio is much higher than the slices!!

Normally, my go to place for coffee/dessert in Georgetown is Baked and Wired which I still LOVE. However, I think Pie Sisters is a contender especially if I find myself on that end of M Street.

  2. What Don said, because (sob) one of our biggest reasons for picking 2941 for our wedding was because we were hoping it would endure in its present form for anniversaries and other big "life" occasions and this seems worse, for our purposes, than closing down entirely :( Good luck, all.

Same with us!!! While our wedding was very nice (but small) the guests loved the food and the space. We loved that we could celebrate our anniversary there as well. It doesn't sound like the new incarnation will be such a great anniversary destination. However, I will wait and see.

  3. Just got back from Las Vegas. Some dining highlights included the following:

Lotus of Siam - The short ribs penang was probably the best dish I've had at a Thai restaurant anywhere. I thought that LoS was worthy of the hype. Do note when they ask how hot you want a dish 1 - 10, it can get very spicy. I ordered our appetizer as a 5 and it was too spicy for me.

Bouchon - breakfast. Everything was just right. perfect eggs, great croissants, etc.

Sage - Service and food were excellent. Loved my scallop dish and husband loved his short ribs. Also, have an absinthe (sp?) cart. We tried a Pernod which to me tasted like an alcoholic Good and Plenty. It was sort of soothing though. Also had an interesting cocktail called Tea Rose (I think).

  4. Anything new and noteworthy in Quebec City? For that matter, any recommendations at all...?

Just returned from QC and Montreal. In QC, as noted elsewhere on the board, we also really liked L'Echaude. Pain Beni was also good.

  5. My nieces are coming over for a slumber party this weekend and I'd like to order some dinner to be delivered. We live in West Falls Church. The kids love Chinese food (well, Chinese-American food actually!) Any suggestions would be appreciated as I don't have much experience with having food delivered.

    thanks!!!

  6. I use to frequent Breadline weekly but no longer work in the area. Stopped by today and had a Cuban sandwich. What a disappointment! It cost $9.50 and while still quite large was rather tasteless. There were large slabs of what seemed like mystery meat but I guess was pork. gone was the cumin flavor or any flavor for that matter. I remember I use to really like this sandwich and could make 2 meals out of it. Today's sandwich was large enough but not appetizing enough for 2 meals. did I just hit them on the wrong day or has this place gone downhill? Or could I just have an exaggerated memory of how good the Cuban sandwich use to be????

  7. Any good wine deals spotted at Costco recently? I saw that Joe H recommended the Nine Stones Barossa Shiraz. Is there anything else of note at Costco?

    thanks!!!

(If this topic already exists, please move this.(Sorr!!) I couldn't find an existing topic but think it might exist.)

  8. We purchased this bottle at Costco at Joe H's suggestion a while back and just had the bottle tonight with dinner. Everyone really enjoyed it (well, I'm not a wine drinker but everyone else enjoyed it!) My husband wants more!!! He thinks he can go to Costco and buy more. I doubt its still there but whatever. He can dream!

thanks to Joe H for the tip. My family thought it was a real winner.

  9. It turned out we were a group of 5 with some not very adventurous eaters. We ended up at Matchbox which was fine. We were there early so it wasn't too loud and the kids seemed to like it. I ordered my sliders medium and they came out well done but maybe its more difficult to cook tiny burgers medium? In any case, they were pretty good. I gave most of the onion straws to the nieces who gobbled them up. For dinner they gave us gratis some yummy donut holes filled with caramel. Everyone seemed happy and the Mystics won so it was a nice evening.

thanks everyone for the suggestions. I got lots of ideas for future outings in the Penn Quarter area.

  10. It's not area-specific to Gallery Place but we have this thread ...

I don't know that I'd call my usual suggestions -- Proof, Poste, or PS7's -- totally "kid-friendly" per se. That said, it depends on her palate, age, and demeanor. Can you give more information about your niece and we can try to hone in on ideas? :)

Thanks. My niece is almost 10 years old. She is open to trying most things (except a number of normally popular fruits!) I know she likes Indian food as she is regular at Raga in Arlington. (Every time she gets straight A's on her report card she gets to pick a restaurant and its always Raga.) Not sure how she would like Rasika as she doesn't deal well with any deviations from her usual Rogan josh (spelling.) She also loves sweets (or is that me. no its both of us!)

  11. I'm talking my niece to a Mystics game tomorrow night and would like to go to dinner beforehand. Does anyone have any suggestions for places that are kid friendly and have good food. I was thinking of taking her to Matchbox, but it sounds like its very loud inside. Any other suggestions?

(I have a feeling this thread must exist somewhere but I can't find it yet. Please feel free to merge with an existing thread.)

    thanks so much!

  12. Looking for suggestions of any restaurants in DC that offer lunch deals during the week. By lunch deals, I mean something along the lines of the Lickety Split lunch at Restaurant Eve (although I'm not expecting as great a bargain as that!!) We are looking for a place that is metro accessible. THANKS!

  13. You can't go wrong here. This place is really, really good.

One recommendation is the sushi menu. I have torn it up on many occasions. Then keep in mind that Chef Tunks spent a few years in the early '90s in Louisiana, so the seafood gumbo is quite good. If the Tower of Crab is on the menu, by all means, get it. It's probably the best homage to crab in the DC area right now.

You made me hungry just thinking about this place....

We loved it!! My husband had raw oysters for a starter and I had the gazpacho with lobster. I thought about some sushi but thought the gazpacho may be a bit more refreshing. For our mains, my husband had grilled trout and asparagus. He thought it was one of the better trout dishes he has had. I had the scallops with pasta, peas and bacon. It was delicious though I might have chosen something less hearty for such a friggin hot day. Loved it anyways. For dessert, he had sorbets and I had some sort of chocolate mousse praline concoction that was recommended by the waiter. It was divine!!!

We've had a tough month and this was the perfect outing to relax! I haven't been to Reston since the 1990's and it sure has grown!!!
