  1. I second the comment on Konchan Chaar. It was intense on the flavor and light on the salt, with just enough season to bring out the sweetness of the shrimps. Other dishes that I liked were fish curry, baby eggplant, pineapple menaskai, and those strange noodles with a very unique aroma. I am not a veteran Indian food eater, so it was wonderful to try so many dishes not offered in typical Indian restaurants.

Thanks for organizing this event and thanks Indique Heights for a great meal.

  2. Dim sum (or dian xing in pinying) means snack, so any small plate or portable street food in China can be called dim sum. Cantonese dim sum can be very elaborate, but that is more of a recent development. Traditional Chinese breakfast is much simpler and cost effective, usually consists of congee, xi fan (basically hot water mixed with yesterday's rice), fried crullers, steamed buns, and different types of pickled vegetables and whatever leftover from the night before.

  3. Maybe because I told the cashier this was a first for me and it wasn't terribly busy, every space in my paper bag not taken up by the burger was filled w fries.

When I go to 5 guys with husband, we share a small order of fries, and the most we can consume was maybe 2/3 of an order. This past weekend, we got lunch at 5 guys. The four of us each got a burger and shared one order of small fries, and we were finally almost able to finish the entire order.

  4. I got the Wellington, while it contained a juciy beefy patty, the mushroom topping was too overpowering (cognac mushroom toppping from Rays is my favorite). All I can taste was rosemary and mushroom. The place was rather chaotic and they made several mistakes on my order (forgot my fries, burger not cooked to temperature, didn't know what garlic fries was). I will wait a month and give it a another go.

  5. Thanks Eric for the invitation to tag along. I thought the pea shoots were some of the most tender and fresh ones I have ever had. I probably consumed at least 50% of that dish. The crab was cooked bi feng tang style. It was very similar to spicy salt and pepper, but also had small chunks of pork and egg. We wanted to order razor clams with yellow chives from the wall menu, but they were out of those too.

  6. I am a member of yelp elite. I got the invitation to join the elite squad after I posted around 60 or so reviews and over 100 photos of local eateries. The overall demographic tend to be in their 20s and 30s, but they do value quality over quantity. In other words, if all of your reviews consist of "this was so yummy and everything was so tasty", then you are not going to get invited. Like Bettyjoan said, Yelp hires one person to "manage" a particular area (a person by the name of Kevin L manages DC area). I think they have a monthly event where you get free booze and appetizers, probably sponsored by yelp, but I haven't personally been to any of them yet. I am certainly not getting free meals out of this, and I don't see anyone become attach to a restaurant just because they got some freebies out of it yet. I use yelp to look at pictures of the restaurants and their food. I am one of those person who is more likely to go to a particular restaurant if I know beforehand what the food looked like (Check out the grill mark on the meat and the freshness of the sushi, etc). Another thing yelp does is very similar to $20 Tuesday, which consists of bunch of people getting together for good food. I know they have a pho group, a pizza group, and a carnivore group.

  7. I am looking for a steak restaurant for our anniversary. Which place has better steak? Do they age their steak differently (ie dry-age vs. wet-age) or cook their steak differently (ie, broil vs grill)? Which place is more laid-back and relaxing? I hate stuffy restaurants, so I think Prime Rib is out of question.

  8. I've seen a few people praise the smokey petal. When I tried it, the baby clams looked like they were out of a can. What I tasted in that dish was mostly dried bits of beef. I can see the clams but they were flavorless and overpowered. While it's a pretty presentation, which reminded me of clam taco salad, I was not at all impressed with that dish. I wonder if I went on an off day and should try this again.

I thought it tasted mostly like lime leave and lemon grass. I still like the taste of the dish, but not a fan of the crackers, which was like chewing styrofoam. Their version of shaking beef was very tender and slightly sweet. Much better than Viet Bistro's and Four Sister's.

  9. Their grilled chicken was pretty good and came with a sweet chili sauce and a smoky tamarind sauce. I didn't care for their shrimp panang. An order only had 6 medium sized shrimps in a sauce that resembled Maesri brand curry paste. Nothing wrong with Maesri brand curry sauce, but I can easily make it at home for a fraction of the cost. The drunken noodle was well seasoned and not clumpy. The portion size was smaller than other Thai places since they place the noodles on a bed of cabbage for volume.
