  1. Kong Hee Fat Choi everybody! For the traditional Chinese New Year meal, my wife and I went to Mark's Duckhouse this evening. Ordering from the New Years specials we had the steak in pepper sauce (asked for it "not too cooked" and it came out really succulent and tender) a vegetarian mix featuring lotus root and lots of snow peas and meaty mushrooms, which was also quite good, but needed some chili paste to kick up the lotus root which really doesn't have much of its own taste, some noodles with a seafood medley ( I thought this was good, but my wife said it disappointed her because of too much soy sauce) and a really great pigs knuckle with choi sum. All of these dishes are featured during New Years because their Chinese names are double entendres for things like money, long life, happiness, etc.

Anyway, I post this because several of my recent previous visits to Mark's had led me to believe that it had gone downhill since being taken over by new management a couple of years ago. This evening, however, has led me to revise that view. The service was excellent (although we dined early -- before the dinner/New Years crush), the food was fresh and well-prepared and the wine list -- paired down but respectable and at a good price point. I enjoyed a couple of glasses of Bastgen Blauschiefer, an off-dry riesling which was a perfect enhancement to the dishes we had. Mark's will be back on our rotation.

  2. Personally, I don't think this Friday is too soon, nor should the weather be an impediment (as long as we pick some place Metro accessible). I know I'm going to need a drink this Friday, given the way the work week is going.

    Good luck with this

  3. I've lived in Fairfax County for almost 30 years, and this area does not have a good track record in supporting really good innovative restaurants, outside of Tyson's Corner. And yet folks are more than willing to wait in line for a seat in one of the ubiquitous mediocre chains. So I'm a little skeptical about Fabio succeeding in Fairfax County, much as I'd love to have him that close! Arlington (along the Metro) or Alexandria (Old Town or Del Ray) might provide a more faithful clientele.

If the stars align, I will be one of the first in line to hail his return to our part of the world!

The location that formerly housed Chillis on the corner of Annandale Rd and Rt. 50 has been available "for lease" for more than two years. Of course that location really is a wasteland -- but it's worked for Present which is right around the corner.

If you are referring to today's story, on the front page no less, of the WP, my reaction is sure it was relatively easy in the old days at the Palm, at the original on 45th and 2nd in NYC there was no menu, for waiters to retain the orders in their head. Steak or lobster? Hash Browns? Creamed spinach? How would you like your steak? [Olive or twist? ] Still it's nice in a throwback kind of way to know that they are trying to retain at least some of the traditions by not writing the orders down, even if modernity is catching up. I liked the kvetch about it becoming more difficult because many customers are watching Food Network and thinking they're chefs.

  5. Tried lunch at Screwtop yesterday. Been thinking about the Buffaloaf sandwich since I saw it described above. Did not disappoint. A great way to fill yer belly on a cold winter's day. There are some additions to the sandwich options such as grilled cheese sliders. They need some patronage at lunchtime so I hope those inclined will keep it in mind as a good option for the midday meal.

  6. I just wish they would update their website, as this blurb about Murky is still on the LT site:

Actually the quote, which refers to the coffee program at Liberty and not at Northside, is still basically accurate. Nick Cho was the provider of both the equipment and the know-how that still informs the coffee service at Liberty ( i know because I witnessed his teaching lesson for the Liberty staff). Now that could change once Northside opens....but the beans at Northside will still be provided by Counter Culture.

  7. Stopped by Liberty Tavern, subbing as the temporary am home of Northside Social 'til the real deal opens, this morning to kill some time. Had the egg samwich which is quite good, served on the house-baked toast with the applewood smoked bacon usually seen on the Liberty burgers, some greens and flavored with maple-butter. I would warn the consumer to beware as the yolk in the fried egg is served soft. Not expecting this I bit into the sandwich and had a yolk explosion down my sleeve. [Next time will ask for the yolk to be hard-cooked.] They are still anticipating a mid-January opening and are working on the food menu.

  8. The congee was a lot of food - it came in a one-quart plastic container - and for $6.50? It's a great value, one which every single post-midnight-hungry person on this website should be enjoying. Other than the squid - which is great in this, and merits your attention - it's meant for shoveling down uncritically, and would be excellent for a preemptive strike against impending hangover.

    Cheers,

    Rocks

Or for a recuperating Malaysian Chinese lady who wants something easy to digest that reminds her (somewhat) of home.

  9. Stopped by Screwtop last night. When I came in a little past 5, I was the first at the bar, but within about 20 minutes the bar was full and nearly all the tables were also takenm, so Wendy is off to a roaring start. Half the space is devoted to the retailing of wine and chees and the rest to the Bar. Nice selection of cheeses, and the wine list available at the bar covers all the bases. Congrats, Wendy.

  10. My dinner tonight at Willow was good, and in the Dining Guide, it unquestionably remains the top restaurant in Ballston, but out of the ten-or-so times I've dined here, this visit fell somewhere in the middle of the pack. Incidentally, at 9 PM on a frigid December Thursday, the bar area was packed.

The $5 bar menu is a fantastic bargan, the teaser item to get people in there and drink expensive glasses of wine (which come in huge pours). Instead of the "50 under 50" section of the wine list (which features 50 bottles under $50), I'd rather see "20 under "20." That would be much more impressive, and would afford truly budget dining at this otherwise pricey restaurant.

    Cheers,

    Rocks.

A couple of days ago Tracy (chef-owner) told me that recently the bar has been slammed (not by Liberty standards, I'm sure) in comparison with the way it has been in the past. She said the bar is full practically every evening and the draw seems to be the $5 bar food menu. Aside from Gougeres there are many tasty offers -- a couple of which in combination would even pass for a nice supper. Also the flatbreads are available, and I think they are quite good. BTW Don, calling Willow still the best restaurant in Ballston may be damning with faint praise, don't you think? [if you want to give yourself a real treat don't skip dessert at Willow, Kate Jansen didn't win a RAMMY for nothing]
