  1. I remember the first time I went here was in high school for a prom dinner.  At the time in the early 90's I was amazed at the modern design.  It really seemed ahead of its time.  It was a beautiful humongous space.  The food still then wasn't spectacular, even with my naive high school pallet.  During college and after, it was a great spot to hang out with friends in the summer on the Georgetown waterfront.  I have tons of good memories of those carefree summer evenings, when we were all single, didn't have kids, and very little to worry about.  Sometimes the company you keep and the memories are worth more than anything else.  So for me, it is a special place, albeit one that I haven't been to in ages.

This should probably be moved to the Wegman's thread, but my experiences with the Germantown location have been fine to good (typically go a few times per month, though never for food court or cheese).  Their milk is super-cheap, they sell Sun Noodle ramen kits and Jeni's ice cream pints, and the generic brand groceries are surprisingly decent.  The Germantown location will still be closer to our house than the new one in Rockville, though we may end up going to the latter more because it's closer to our schools and on the way home from work.

True that this should be moved.  I was introduced to Wegmans while a student at Syracuse University, and the DeWitt store, which I believe was their first "mega" location.  At the time it not of this world when compared with anything else.  Their subs were a revelation (and I still think they hold up today because of the bread).  While the Germantown store (or any local store for that matter) does not conjure up the same memories from Syracuse, it is still about 10 steps above any Giant, Safeway, or Teeter.

  3. Green Flash Brewery closes Virginia Beach facility.  Green Flash based in San Diego has announced that they are closing their Virginia Beach production facility and have also stopped distributing to MD, DC, and VA.  I always liked their beers, especially, Rayon Vert (I still have bottles of this in my "cellar").  Anyone want to chip in the $20,000,0000 they want for the facility?  We can open a brewery and quit our day jobs.

  4. I picked up carryout the other night before the impeding storm.  I noticed that the Filipino spot next door was closed and that there were building permits posted in the windows.  I asked the person who helped me at Big Wang what was going in and he said that they were taking over the space and were essentially doubling their size (which is already on the large side).  He said they will be open in about 2 months and will have an expanded menu.

  5. A couple of weeks ago a friend and I walked up on a Friday in the hopes that we could snag a seat at Brother's and Sister's.  As we walked up the front steps, we were "greeted" by two large bouncers, who when we told them we didn't have a reservation, boxed us out, and wouldn't let us even move further up the steps of the property and told us to leave.  I guess a 40 year old lawyer is very scary looking and not the demographic they were going for.  It was very off putting, I don't really know what the purpose was of the treatment, perhaps, they could have just told us they were fully booked and we should try for another night.  I know it was Friday, soon after opening, but it was a pretty rude treatment.

I do visit the Arlington and Mclean stores for beer when I'm throwing a party of visiting my son.  I'm still trying to convince my son to shop the selection at Arrowwine and favor the local vendor.  I did convince him to blindly buy me Aslin beer whenever he gets to the brewery I Herndon.

On a related note, that same son dated one of the Trone(total beverage owner) Daughters when he was in high school.

Although a huge company, Total wine is a local company with headquarters in Bethesda.

They are also going to be getting shipments from their Offshoot brewery from time to time; I don't think these are distributed anywhere else in the area.

I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure that Offshoot isn't distributed anywhere other than through their own retail stores or their website.  I am going to head there later this week to pick up my first allocation.  Can't wait.

Now this is hummus.  I've yet to find hummus this good in the US (Zahav's product is not even close)

And to me Machneyuda would be a Modern Israeli restaurant, or I think they would probably describe it as a Modern Jerusalem restaurant.  We had a fabulous meal at the chef's counter several years ago.  Their sister restaurant, The Palomar, in London is also excellent, although it roams a little further afield with its influences.

That video made me very hungry.  Nothing like that around here.
