  1. This is a bit off as it assumes that the restaurant -- like an illiterate peasant subject to the merciless whims of the global potato market -- has no control over its policies and could not make it simpler for you to get a seat.

They're under no obligation to make anything simpler because the market is under no obligation to go there. If the market revolts against these terms, then it will have spoken. I'd also argue that going to a no reservations restaurant is "simpler" than a hot place that takes reservations, because the people who fuck up the reservation schema by booking tables they never bother to cancel.

People act as if these restaurants are the DMV, a public institution that one has to do business with to lead their life.

  2. Sometimes it's what the restaurant insists on putting you through that you never even get to the door.

This is another thing I find funny -- how is a restaurant "putting you through that?" Seems to me that the quarrel should be with the marketplace, not the supplier. A restaurant opens, allows people through its doors whenever they'd like during their posted hours, but you can't get in because the crowd has spoken. The restaurant did nothing but serve food during open hours, it's their customers who are blocking the door -- not the staff. And, has been documented by others (including Sietsema in the article above), a no reservation policy actually leads to more diners being served in an evening.

  3. What goes around comes around. When Erik Bruner-Yang, the chef of the no-reservations Toki Underground, visited a like-minded peer, his verbal review of the production began: "I waited two hours for Rose's."

Toki offers reservations from 5-6:30 on weekdays. Kind of like "some reservations" Momofuku (which only offers reservations for the $125 family fried chicken dinner. $125 group meal reservation, hey that rings a bell!) People need to calm their tits over this stuff, including ole fuddy duddy Sietsema. He should stick to worrying about decibel levels, not weakly carving out meta-narratives in "trend pieces."

But hospitality takes a holiday at establishments that don't book.

Seems to me one of the most expressed praises for Rose's is the gracious service.

The shift is surprising for a city where power brokers like to be recognized and, better yet, to show off their standing.

Are you lobbying for the dull expense account crowd who made this city a culinary backwater for decades? Fuck them.

    I need a cup of coffee. :)

Very welcome addition to Kensington. Bright, practical space that's set up well for folks who want to pop in to get some work done (WiFi) or just enjoy coffee and a quick bite. Not really comfy for lingering, but no big deal. K-town has become a hot spot for Vigilante beans, they're used here as well as Saturday Farmer's Market stand and Suburban Trading Co. Had a really well made double cappuccino when I stopped in last week. They do pour overs and have a substantial breakfast and lunch menu. Big fan already - helps to fill in the Montgomery County independent coffee desert.

  5. Hey all,

I was wondering if any stores or distributors offered keg delivery in DC.  I have a bad ankle and we have 100 or so thirsty people to quench this Sunday.

Now this is a Mother's Day plan!

  6. Rose's is also no longer the must go to restaurant in D. C.  That is Fiola Mare now which has an extraordinary location and is in a spectacular room.  Factor in Washington Harbor and the boat docks a few feet away from outdoor tables and Barracks Row just doesn't have the appeal that it might have had over the winter.

I don't think Fiola Mare is a must go restaurant for anyone in DC under the age of 35 -- who don't even know what the Washington Harbor is (they probably think it's in Oxon Hill).

  7. In the wasteland of chain restaurants that is MoCo, we are lucky to have a local gem like Quench.

I appreciate that this is kind of a throwaway line at the end of a nice review -- but I really don't think of Montgomery County as a chain wasteland. Maybe that's true in the north and west of the county but in southern, eastern and central portions that's not the case -- especially when you compare with the other suburban/exurban counties in America (try getting good Thai or Peruvian food in DuPage County, IL). You just have to look (and it's not that hard thanks to places like donrockwell.com ;)) for the family run joints lurking off the main drags. Pizza CS, Joe's Noodle House, Ren's Ramen, 8407, Samantha's, La Brasa, Bob's Noodle, Grapeseed, etc, etc. And when you consider how terrible the liquor laws are for MoCo businesses and how close we are to a major dining city -- it's all the more impressive that there's some good eats here.

  8. I should mention that the Red Roof restaurant in left field is a despicably horrible palce to eat. What it lacks in quality, it makes up for with horrendous service and higher than stupid prices. Take an Applebee's and remove any semblance of cooking talent from the kitchen, double the prices, and you might have something as wretched as the Red Roof.

Just for the sake of clarity, I'm assuming you're referring to the sit down restaurant portion of the Red Porch. Don't want to be a busy body editor, just want folks to be clear about your warning! :)

  9. Sadly I know better than to eat at the during a game in the first series of the season. Huge crowds mean huge lines and overwhelmed/underprepared staff members. I'll check out G during a Marlins game ;)

The disappointing news that I can report, beer prices went up by $0.75-$1.00. Booooo! Will now set you back $9 for a 20oz aluminum bottle of Miller Lite/Coors Lite/etc. $9.75 for a 20oz Sam Adams draft (my go to). Still $10 for 16oz craft beer from the Red Porch. Better be making the playoffs at those prices.

  10. Went to Union Market for some early dinner grazing yesterday afternoon. Getting Fish and Chips at District Fishwife was definitely our priority -- and they did not disappoint. Fiona took my order and had a bit of time to chat as things were winding down on what was probably a pretty busy weekend for them. She talked me in to one of her DC Brau/Chocolate City Black & Tans. The superior (DC Brau) Penn Quarter Porter kind of overwhelms the Chocolate City Copper Ale -- and the two don't layer because there's no nitrogen added to the porter so that it will float over the ale (as you would see when Guinness Drought is used). But this is over beer nerd analysis - it tasted like PQP and was refreshing.

The fish: terrific. And I don't even like catfish. Was wary when I saw that she uses blue catfish, but I appreciate her reasons for using the species. We need to save cod and get rid of nasty ass catfish, so might as well fry em up! And DF charges a reasonable $12 for two sizable filets with a large serving of chips. If she was using cod, I bet the price would be more like $18 or a much less generous portion would be on offer. But the star here is the excellent, crispy batter and nice frying. The fish itself was flaky, mild and clearly very fresh. I wonder if catfish tastes a little better when it wonders in to the saltwater of the Bay, where it's not supposed to be.

The chips: excellent. Kind of a hybrid between hand-cut skin-on fries and proper chips. Nicely cooked and great with the homemade ketchup that Fiona had just finished cooling. So glad that was ready for us. The tartar sauce was nice too.

Union Market is such a nice place to bring our toddler; parking, enclosed but room to wander, plenty of tables, easy for us to get food and adult beverages on the go. I think DF will be our go to for fish and chips now. Fiona got me to enjoy two things I'm usually pretty anti, catfish and ketchup. :D

  11. The only other thing I'll note (in case anyone from Rose's is reading this) is my that work computer won't let me access the menu.  I can get to the site, but when I click the "menu" tab, a new window opens up and I get this message:

Your request http://rosesluxury.com/the-menu/ was denied because of its content categorization: "Restaurants/Dining/Food;Suspicious"

That's to do with your firewall/network settings, not necessarily the RL site.
