  1. So has anyone had much look in finding Finger Lakes wines in the DC/MD/VA area? Particularly in quantity.... like 3 cases worth? I need 3 cases of finger lakes riesling by the 3rd weekend of May - I've got a very nice person from Total Wine trying to get me 3 cases of Wagner.... but even he was saying I should look for some back-up options... total wine also carries Hazlitt and Bully Hill, but I'm not going anywhere near those. I'd love to find a place that carries Standing Stone.

  2. So in the last month, I've discovered the 5th and K location and have been trying out some different sandwiches. Started with the 9th St Italian. Good, better then anything I can get nearby, but not as good as say Italian Place. Next visit, Art Museum (breaded chicken, roasted red peppers, prov) - quite good. Anyone had the chicken sandwiches with grilled chicken instead of breaded cutlet? I'll have to try that sometime.... part of me thinks that the bread and the breading don't complement each other as well as they should... I'll also need to try some of the other combos. The Pattison Ave.... wow! Easily the best of the 3 I've had. While I can see how some folks could think that the sandwiches should be bigger given the prices.... can't say that at all about the Pattison.... eating it, the meat and brocolli rabe are spilling out... the pork so moist and complemented perfectly with the brocolli rabe and the sharp provolone.

Best part, so close to work... never a reason to go to Quizno's again......

  3. There are scallops available as well as crab royale I believe. Both tasty from what I've heard (I can't tear myself away from the steaks). Also clam chowder in addition to the bisque.

And yes, you can call ahead for reservations. I think they hold some of the seats for walk-ins, but you can definitely call ahead.

Also salmon diablo.... that's how I get my non-beef eating wife-to-be to go.

  4. This last Tuesday was packed at about 7pm... tough for even 2 of us to grab a seat. Vulturing for seats definitely required. Had the scottish cask ale, Schiehallion, and also the Hopfenkonig. Friend had the Bell's Double Cream Stout, which was also available in cask. Food... tater tots (awesome), and the cheese flatbread. The 4-oz pours are definitely nice for sampling. 5 bartenders taking care of everyone - their hearing must be incredible (or perhaps its their lipreading) to make out some of the orders at the bar 3 people deep. The bottled menu comes out in a 1-inch 3-ring binder.... and the pages are laminated double-sided.... though it does also include the wine list.

Awesome place.... especially not even 1 block from home. Now I've got to try downstairs....

  5. Using DPop's definition, another new place opening up: Crepes on the Corner in the original Garden District location @ 14th & S.

looking forward to trying Birch & Barley. A place that's not in the dining guide is ThaiTanic... which I personally like better than Rice, particularly when taking price into consideration.

So Don, I guess just looking at where other places are placed in neighborhoods in the dining guide, we're using a definition for Logan Circle of roughly 16th Street to the west, 10th Street to the east, Corcoran (or maybe R) to the north, and Mass (or maybe N) to the south?

  6. Checked the place out last night. As has been mentioned above, the concept seems to have scaled back a bit (see menu). It's now an--order at the counter, get a number, and they bring the food out to you--place. I had the chicken skewers which came on a salad; mrs rbh-to-be had the grilled asparagus salad with a chicken skewer. The food was well prepared... though perhaps a bit heavy on the dressing for the salad. Boylen's soda fountain, handful of fruity type mixed drinks (rum punch, vodka lemonade, among others), beers such as Blue Moon.

The place is not a destination restaurant by any stretch of the imagination... though if you're in the mall and want a bite to eat, it's definitely a good option and fills a nice void between the food court and the higher end places at the mall. I'm a bit surprised that the place only has an external entrance and no direct entrance to the mall... I'd think this is a place that'd benefit from mall foot traffic. The look and feel of the place would lead one to believe that it's a chain.... talking to annapolis friends later that evening about the place, they were surprised it was a local restaurant instead of a chain. Definitely kid-friendly.

  7. Hazlitt is a nice mid-day stop for the popcorn they provide w/ the wine tastings. Everyone's already stated the cream of the crop..... Dr. Frank's, Standing Stone, Wiemer. Wiemer's a bit pricier... but the late harvest Riesling is amazing. Vidal Ice is great at Standing Stone.

Glenora used to be better, but they're open until 7 or 8pm...later then most places. I love Wagner's deck in back.

On Cayuga Lake, Sheldrake Point is good, Swedish Hill/Goose Watch are ok.... maybe among the better sparklings in the area.

I'm going at the end of the month.... can't wait....

  8. Parking in AC is $5/day (though somehow I think some may be $10) - however, it comes with a free transfer... so when you leave one casino, ask for a transfer receipt.... then at the next lot, you can use that receipt for your payment.

  9. I was here a weekend ago... and with saturday dim sum lunch, we indulged in the peking duck... which was tasty. But the interesting bonus is getting the duck soup, which they make using the carcass and adding some veggies (chinese cabbage primarily), tofu, and bean threads. As one of my friends said, it tasted quite "ducky". Not a lot of places do this, and it'd been awhile since I'd had it. Some places will also create a noodle dish using some of the duck meat, so it's Peking Duck - 3-dishes.

  10. Somehow, I've managed to eat at the one in Manhatten, Union Station, and NYNY in Vegas (and maybe even the one in Tysons). While they may try to do things from all over the U.S., I can't say they do any of them particularly well.... even pancakes in Vegas were disappointing. For chain restaurants at the price point, I'd rather be at Friday's or Cheesecake Factory.

  11. Last summer I use to go Sundays ~4pm and there was barely any wait to order. I've had a craving for a Hell-burger the past month, but last week went to Palena to avoid the lines. I'm guessing lunchtime until closing it's slammed now.

Anyone visited post-POTUS, when the line isn't out the door?

Is there a window of opportunity, a magic time to visit? :D

I went about 10 days ago... Friday evening about 1030pm.... no line

  12. I was here with a friend last night also. We sat at the bar... happy hour here runs 4-8pm and offers half-price drinks and appetizers. So we each had a couple mojitos and split veggie nachos and these veggie egg roll things. The drinks were quite good, particularly at $5 each. The food I agree was not spectacular. I'm curious to try some of the other dishes when I'm not w/ my vegetarian friend though. Service at the bar was attentative. Reasonably busy for a Wednesday night.... but still quiet enough to have a reasonably-volumed conversation.

I think it's a good addition to the 14th St neighborhood though; not quite anything else like it nearby .... now if we can get a laid-back pizza joint (think Faccia Luna-like, or maybe even Pete's Apizza) and a good bagel shop into the neighborhood.....

  13. I work half a block from there.... am looking forward to it. Though 5th and H doesn't quite sound right.... barring a major renovation.... SE corner - church parking lot; SW corner - Red Roof Inn/Irish Channel; NW corner - Li Ho, Momiji, Full Kee; NE corner-assorted row houses. Maybe it's one of the retail options at the bottom of the new building at 6th and H?
