  1. Thank you, Kibbee.  We visited Marib last year and were very happy with it.  Maybe we'll check out Saba soon.

We are a group of readers who discuss our book selections at local restaurants.  We try to eat at a restaurant associated with the locale/ethnicity featured in the month's book selection.  Doesn't always work (we want to keep our reading options open regardless) so sometimes we just eat somewhere local and interesting.

We appreciate yout thoughts.  All suggestions will be gratefully received!

  2. Checking in after a long time offline.  I'm searching for restaurants within 20 minutes of the George Mason Library (east end of Annandale strip on 236).  US 50 and Gallows Road (Merrifield) probably ok, maybe north end of Springfield.  Moderately priced.  Here's the catch, am especially interested in African (west and Nigerian), Italian and other European, and Persian and Turkish.  Also, any seafood recommendations, especially crabs and crabcakes?  We already have good lists for Asian although of course any new recommendations would be very welcome.

Amid the abundance of restaurants in the area, the cuisine preferences make a tall order.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

  3. Speaking of Hong Kong Palace, has it closed?   Gayot says is closed https://www.gayot.com/restaurants/hong-kong-palace-falls-church-va-22044_33vg080503.html  Meaning, closed-closed or just not open right now ... ?

    I gotta find out TODAY!

The Shopper's at that side of Seven Corners has reportedly closed as of September 1 and will be renovated into a Giant.  A loss, this was an interesting grocery for an occasional visit, combining "merican with FFX County multicultural offerings.

  4. Count me in;  how do I sign up?  Afghan Bistro is wonderful although I haven't been there in a long time.  My Afghan friends, from Kabul, give it an A+ for both authenticity and taste.

Would also be pleased with a progressive dinner and cooperate, although it is recognized the human tendency is to stay put once enjoying a good meal.

  5. Afghan Bistro presented a delightful meal for our party on Friday 9.30.  The kabob were tender and cooked medium rare as ordered.  The vegetable combo entree included rice with carrots and raisins, sabzi, potatoes and pumpkin;  all were excellent as was the eggplant appetizer. Even the American style salads with chicken on top were very good. The house provided complementary chopped Afghan salad (tomatoes, onion etc.) and pickle.  Afghani Americans in our party loved the food.  Wine prices begin reasonably at $32 and the whole meal was extremely fairly priced.   On the east side of Alban Road (continuation of Backlick past Fairfax County Parkway) south of McDonald's.

Our family's new go-to spot.  Very popular and reservations for dinner are recommended.

  6. Hello all --- I'm Mary, a foodie from way back, now living in VA.

Annandale, to be exact: and pleased that as it turns out Annandale has all kinds of unanticipated food options to explore. I'm looking forward to hearing everybody's opinions about the eats around the Washington area. Gardening, vegetables and history/ethnography and botany are other interests, so there's lots to explore.

    Glad to be here.
