  1. Is the Merrifield Great Wall on Gallows still open for business, August 2021? Yelp reports that it has closed. Inquiring minds (hungry stomachs) want to know!
  2. Has Miu Kee closed? I called this afternoon to order takeout and Verizon said "not available at this time". Would be a loss, one of my favorites in that neck of the woods. Excellent BBQ and large servings of ma po bean curd better than most.
  3. A good option for Annandale carryout, good taste/cost ratio. My go-to when I want a lot of food on a budget. Operated by a very nice family.
  4. Dominion Deli has closed. Windows have been papered over and there is a goodbye message on Facebook. Unfortunate: it was an independent deli with real food in a convenient strip. Good breakfasts and old-fashioned sandwiches. It will be missed.
  5. Thank you, Kibbee. We visited Marib last year and were very happy with it. Maybe we'll check out Saba soon. We are a group of readers who discuss our book selections at local restaurants. We try to eat at a restaurant associated with the locale/ethnicity featured in the month's book selection. Doesn't always work (we want to keep our reading options open regardless) so sometimes we just eat somewhere local and interesting. We appreciate yout thoughts. All suggestions will be gratefully received!
  6. Checking in after a long time offline. I'm searching for restaurants within 20 minutes of the George Mason Library (east end of Annandale strip on 236). US 50 and Gallows Road (Merrifield) probably ok, maybe north end of Springfield. Moderately priced. Here's the catch, am especially interested in African (west and Nigerian), Italian and other European, and Persian and Turkish. Also, any seafood recommendations, especially crabs and crabcakes? We already have good lists for Asian although of course any new recommendations would be very welcome. Amid the abundance of restaurants in the area, the cuisine preferences make a tall order. Any ideas? Thanks.
  7. Panisa Thai has become my extended family's go-to. There is an area in back with a long table, rendering the restaurant considerably more baby- and kid-friendly. Good food, cheerful and good service, pleasant decor and very reasonably priced. Easy to enjoy frequently!
  8. Has Hong Kong Palace closed? Confused and saddened by entry at Gayot that it is "closed." https://www.gayot.com/restaurants/hong-kong-palace-falls-church-va-22044_33vg080503.html As in, "permanently closed? Checking today!
  9. Speaking of Hong Kong Palace, has it closed? Gayot says is closed https://www.gayot.com/restaurants/hong-kong-palace-falls-church-va-22044_33vg080503.html Meaning, closed-closed or just not open right now ... ? I gotta find out TODAY! The Shopper's at that side of Seven Corners has reportedly closed as of September 1 and will be renovated into a Giant. A loss, this was an interesting grocery for an occasional visit, combining "merican with FFX County multicultural offerings.
  10. Thank you for the brunch and weekday buffet news. I enjoyed the food and decor when I ate there several months (a year?) ago. I avoid Tyson's like the plague but will get a grip and visit again soon.
  11. Ah, Uncle Liu's. Somehow haven't been for a while. Time to check out the latest incarnation! Sounds very good.
  12. Yup, guess so. For those who require wine, there are plenty of selections including moderately priced ones.
  13. Count me in; how do I sign up? Afghan Bistro is wonderful although I haven't been there in a long time. My Afghan friends, from Kabul, give it an A+ for both authenticity and taste. Would also be pleased with a progressive dinner and cooperate, although it is recognized the human tendency is to stay put once enjoying a good meal.
  14. Agree completely. The Afghani members of our party raved about the food ... and yes they know how good home-cooked Afghan food can be. Another of the many factors to commend Afghani Bistro is that they serve halal meat (see my entry at that topic). We'll be back for sure.
  15. Afghan Bistro presented a delightful meal for our party on Friday 9.30. The kabob were tender and cooked medium rare as ordered. The vegetable combo entree included rice with carrots and raisins, sabzi, potatoes and pumpkin; all were excellent as was the eggplant appetizer. Even the American style salads with chicken on top were very good. The house provided complementary chopped Afghan salad (tomatoes, onion etc.) and pickle. Afghani Americans in our party loved the food. Wine prices begin reasonably at $32 and the whole meal was extremely fairly priced. On the east side of Alban Road (continuation of Backlick past Fairfax County Parkway) south of McDonald's. Our family's new go-to spot. Very popular and reservations for dinner are recommended.
  16. Curious Grape closed Saturday March 28. I noticed an email from Friday identifying the closing pricing for wines and describing the final wine tasting which was held on Saturday. Too bad. I wish the owner and staff well for whatever lies down the road.
  17. I was at the butcher shop today and the clerk said the restaurant would open for summer. Must wait: BooHoo! But bought meat treats I am looking forward to cooking at home.
  18. Hello all --- I'm Mary, a foodie from way back, now living in VA. Annandale, to be exact: and pleased that as it turns out Annandale has all kinds of unanticipated food options to explore. I'm looking forward to hearing everybody's opinions about the eats around the Washington area. Gardening, vegetables and history/ethnography and botany are other interests, so there's lots to explore. Glad to be here. Yesvirginia
