  1. I had brunch here this past weekend.  The eggs in hell (2 eggs in tomato sauce with a slice of grilled bread) were fine, but nothing special.  However, I was pleasantly surprised by the side that I ordered.  The menu only described it as "mushrooms."   So I expected ordinary mushrooms.  What I got was a side of maitake mushrooms with lightly crispy tops and meaty bodies, with a soft cheese "sauce" (like ricotta) next to them.  I would go back for those mushrooms.

Freddy's is/was offering them (not sure if it's a permanent menu staple now), but as a substitute for a side you don't get many.  Alamo fries the spears mozzarella-stick style, but I've found that's a horrible way to do it, since hot, greasy frickles are manageable in chip form, but the spears retain a tremendous amount of heat from the frier, so biting into a fried pickle spear can be akin to biting into semi-gelatinous pickle innards.

Honestly, though - Glory Days Grill does good frickles, and they give you a decent amount of them, too.  The *rest* of their menu might be kind of boilerplate, but their frickles are good. <_<

Citizen Burger in Clarendon has fried pickle spears, but I agree that fried spears are inferior to fried slices.

  3. The following excerpt is from Momofuku Nishi's tumblr page (which was linked via their twitter).  They started serving brunch and also stopped including tip in their menu prices.

Beginning Saturday, June 4, Nishi will serve weekend brunch from 12 – 3 pm. On top of select dishes from the dinner menu, new brunch offerings will be served.
Additionally, Nishi’s brunch and dinner menu prices will not include gratuity starting June 4.
What does this mean for guests?  We will have more flexibility with how we price our menu. You can check out the full brunch menu here, and Nishi’s updated dinner menu will go live before service tomorrow.
What does that mean for staff? We started this experiment to pay our cooks a wage we believe in. Cooks will maintain the same wages moving forward as they did with the no-tipping model.
This is by no means the end of the no-tipping discussion at Momofuku. But at this moment, we think a tipping model will benefit our guests and staff. Thanks to everyone who has come to the restaurant during our first six months. We look forward to seeing you for brunch or dinner soon.

Matsutake in Ballston has a sushi and hot food buffet at lunch on weekdays. It was pretty crowded yesterday. It was about $13 and ok. They had a large variety of sushi. A number of the rolls had tempura fried ingredients or sauces on top. The piece of salmon I had tasted kinda fishy. They also had hot foods including gyoza, teriyaki beef, spicy chicken, lo mein, fried rice, egg rolls, spicy cucumber, soup, rice, and salad.

As an update, Matsutake in Ballston closed in 2014.

  5. Chef Morimoto's Momosan (ramen plus other dishes) opened on April 8, 2016, at 342 Lexington Ave (between 38 and 39th St).  I've eaten there 4 times, and I really like it.

My favorite is the lunch set.  A small don (rice bowl) and small ramen for $16.  The zuke don, which is raw tuna with soy, sesame, nori, scallion, over rice, is my absolute favorite. Chunks of very fresh raw tuna with a soy sesame seasoning over rice.

I've had the tonkatsu pork ramen as well as the tan tan - coconut curry ramen - and enjoyed both.   The broths are rich.  The ramen noodles are good but aren't as springy as the noodles at Daikaya.

I've also enjoyed the chashu salad - lettuce, cucumber, slices of pork.

The dinner menu has a larger selection of appetizers.  I didn't care for the duck in crispy wonton skin (like a little taco), but that was because the sauce was sweeter than I like.  The buta kimchi -- sauteed pork jowl and kimchi - was flavorful and delicious.  The $2 side of rice was on the smaller side, however.  I could have gotten 2 sides of rice.

  6. Saw this article through a tweet by Barred in DC referring to a tweet by Isaac Arnsdorf:

Politico: "Johnny's Half Shell Is Moving to Adams Morgan"  From the article:

That's partially true. If you reserve at the bar, drinks aren't included, but they obviously expect you to order drinks a-la-carte. If you reserve at a tabe, during checkout, you are asked if you want the alcoholic or non-alcoholic pairing. The non-alcoholic pairing is a lower price, I think by $20 or $30.

Yes, at the bar, you can choose what you want for drinks.  I had dinner at the bar and pre-paid $150 for food.  Once I was there, I was given the option of the alcoholic beverage pairing ($100) or a cocktail or wine by the glass.  I didn't ask, but I would assume you could ask for the non alcoholic pairing as well.  As of last week, I think cocktails were available at the bar but not the dining room.  I enjoyed both the presentation and taste of the coffee cocktail ($20 including tip/tax) (I'd order the coffee cocktail with dessert).
