  1. .....(I have to admit ignorance of Deli City - where is it?)....
Deli City is on Bladensburg Rd a block or two north of New York Ave (across from the Metro Bus garage). While it has a very good corned beef sandwich, it is nothing like the delis you describe. It does a lot of carry out business though there are maybe 20 or so tables. If you don't get sit down service you order at a window in the corner. It's only open Mon-Fri something like 6am to 6pm.

    LOVE Attman's!

  2. I've never seen it in cans. Dr. Browns comes in both packaging year round & don't do anything different for Passover. I think the big boys only do the 2-liter bottles for the holiday (more cost-effective?).
I've bought the KP cans in New York, Chicago and Pittsburgh, but I've never seen them around here. I didn't know Dr Brown's used the same formula year round.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  3. Has anyone seen any kosher for Passover Coke in 6-pack cans?

I've seen plenty of 2-litre bottles (look for the signature yellow cap), and 2-litre bottles of Pepsi as well (plain white cap, with a blue KP on top) but no cans (Giant has 6-packs of Dr. Brown's black cherry as well as 1-litre bottles).

    Thanks very much,

    Kevin

  4. Help, y'all! I am going to Savannah this week and need some suggestions for fleshing out my eating itnerary. Can you believe I've not even researched the sites? Food is my mission, people! So far I've got the following under consideration:

Masada Cafe at the United House of Prayer for All People (lunch) I love a church basement cafeteria, don't you?

    The Breakfast Club (Tybee Island)

    Queeny's To Go-Go (lunch)

I am short on dinner places and watering holes. I'm not planning to go to The Lady and Sons as I will be leaving my TOURIST shirt at home.

Clary's on Abercorn is one of my favorites. And for hipster doofus trivia, it was used in the movie 'Midnight in the Grden....' as a drugstore.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  5. Lydia R, I second jparrott's nomination of Elizabeth's for breakfast. Check out the menu You would need a cab to get here as it's in Bywater and not a good walk from where you all will be.

Uptown on Canal is a great neighborhood place called Mandina's. My favorite on the menu is the crab fingers, but everything I've had there over the years has been great. You will have to take the streetcar or a cab for this one as well.

I will strongly second Mandina's. Though it's over three years since I've been, and they are only very recently opened post-Katrina, I'm sure you will have an excellent meal there. YES to the crab fingers and a great veal parm. A block or two up Canal and over on Carrollton is Angelo Brocatto which has fantastic gelato and should not be missed. A very short walk from Mandina's (though don't miss Mandina's bread pudding!)

I walked to Elizabeth's when I was last in NOLa and had no trouble, but I don't know how much different it is now. I'd ask a few locals and if they balk, take the cab. DO NOT miss the praline bacon.

Another localish spot is Parkway Bakery for excellent po boys. It's several blocks east of Canal and a few blocks south of Carrollton and is an easy walk from the street car. One of the few spots that had Louisiana Gold hot sauce (kind of a combo of Texas Pete and Tabasco). Be sure to have a Hubig's pie for dessert. In some ways, I consider Domilise's better than Parkway for po boys, but Domilise's was a 20 minute walk from the St Charles street car which I don't know if it's running. Parkway would be much easier to get to.

Fiorella's in the Quarter has some of the best fried chicken, but it's kind of smokey at times and the wait can be long. Best to be/get a little drunk when there.

Several friends have been post-Katrina so my recs should be valid. I hope you can get to Mandina's and report that it is as good as it once was. I've read nothing in re the newly opended Mandina's.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  6. Recently moved from DC to Philadelphia and struggling to find a quality fish market. Recently I've been quite disappointed with the quality of fish at WFM, lots of dry, limp, gray bits of fish in their cases. And they're still charging $20 a pound. In the DC area I adored the seafood at River Falls Market and BlackSalt. Does anyone know of a good spot in Philly to get fresh seafood: whole fish, fillets, shellfish, etc..

I did a bit of searching on Chowhound but most posts were to the Reading Terminal Market vendors whose stands were rather smelly and not much to look at. I want fish that sings!

    Thanks very much.

There are a few seafood places in the Italian Market. Hopefully they will have something you like.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  7. I had a 6-7 year old ask for a Pellegrino and tell me "It better be pellegrino and not just soda. If it is plain soda I am sending it back." Later on she informed me her mac and cheese would also be sent back if there was anything green touching it. (We typically garnish with a TINY bit of fresh chopped herbs) Her mom was having a conversation with the other mom at the table and didn't so much as bat an eye so I guess that must be pretty normal behavior. It just seemed so strange coming out of such a pint sized package. And it was not in an asking sort of way either. If you could see the attitude in her face, she was actually condescending me. After dealing with the mothers throughout the rest of the meal though it all made sense.
    A real life 'Veruca Salt'.

Sthitch's "ether towelettes" - hilarious AND a great idea!!

  8. The Heart Attack Grill in Tempe Arizona, where the waitresses are dressed as scantily clad nurses and the cooks are dressed in scrubs is involved in a cause celebre over the term "nurse". The State Board of Nursing is threatening legal action and The Center for Nursing Advocacy has also gotten involved in the fray.

I see the Heart Attack Grill as no more different than Hooters and don't believe for a second that nurses are being harmed by this place. Perhaps the use of the word "nursing" to mean sipping a drink should come under scrutiny. :)

    Thoughts?

  9. They could use Google maps. Take the 495 W (or whatever it is) direction off of 95 S and take the exit for Georgia Ave. South, drive for about 1.5 miles, make a left on Colesville Rd. and it is right there.
You can't (legally :) ) make a left on to Colesville from Georgia. The Colesville Road exit off the Beltway would probably be easier.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  10. Wired article

Some of this stuff looks interesting enough to be worthwhile (the two jellied concoctions), but dehydrated rum? Vanilla bean wine? Dumb.

Unless the dehydrated rum is like the dehydrated vodka they had in a Jerry Lewis movie about a hundred years ago called 'Way, Way Out', where they added water to a pill to make a bottle of vodka, I agree that it's kind of dumb. :)

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  11. Disagree entirely about Carls. I had some ice cream (well, I call it ice cream) at Carl's a week or two ago -- it's nice enough if you happen to be in Fredericksburg (like, finally blowing your top on I-95 and bailing) but not at all worth a special trip.
I'm wondering if Carl's had made changes in the last couple of years, as like Ilaine, I was there recently (after lunch at Allman's - still great) and while Carl's was good, it wasn't nearly as good as I recall from 2 years ago and many visits before that.

I also think Neilson's is the best in the area, and I like Dairy Godmother, but it's not as rich, to me, as Neilson's. Not that I wouldn't be happy to live in proximity to a place 1/2 as good as Dairy Godmother.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  12. I thought so. No offense itended, I was just joking regarding Al_Dente's searching Roadfood for any connection.

It's actually rogeufood.com, and it looks very similar to this board (I guess it's a standard package sold by Invision).

I'm hoping to make it to Chubby's this weekend, and maybe do a comparison to Mr Chelsea's in Reisterstown as Chubby's is open Sundays.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  13. No. I am moderately offended that someone would feel compelled to remind be to be a gentleman and that "no means no" as though I were too low-rent to know these things already.

    "Jacket required" is fine.

Alas there are far too many mouthbreathers behaving badly in places one would consider classy, that the rules neither offend me, nor surprise me. I wish it weren't so. :)

    PX sounds great.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  14. Their fries are decent if you order them "well-done" (and yes, "animal style" is a must-try).

I had a four-hour layover in SFO last month and convinced one of my friends to pick me up and drive there because I hadn't eaten one in nearly two years. Oh my. In-N-Out is one of the top 2 or 3 things I miss most about California. Seriously.

"Maybe I was speeding a little bit and I got pulled over. I was just really hungry and I wanted to have an In-N-Out Burger."

If they're good enough for Paris Hilton to get arrested over, they're good enough for me :) . If ONLY there were a franchise a little closer to D.C.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  15. I spoke with the manager at the Vienna Whole Foods and he has plenty in stock.
The "plenty of stock" turned out to be ten. I bought four bottles, though I may have made a mistake as it (along with all the China Bowl sauces) is a discontinued item.

There was no Cina Bowl chili puree (though lots of Plum and Hoisen sauces) at the Whole Fields on Rt 7 across from the Trader Joe's / Lido Pizza center.

    Thanks,

    Kevin
