I guess my perspective is weird.  I played and knew the game, and think I know it now, but I haven't followed top level soccer in years.  I watched much of the Belgium v. England match yesterday.  Without having World Cup perspective drilled into my head it seemed strange to watch a match played in the world's number one tournament wherein neither team was giving all out;  many top players on both side were being rested.

Don't like that in a tournament of such consequence.  Every match should matter.  It doesn't make sense to me.   Regardless those were excellent players and frankly I enjoyed the flow of the game with opportunities to score at both ends.  Excellent players played hard.

The goal was a thing of beauty by a highly skilled player with knowledge.  He got the ball in striking distance with only one defender on him;  moved and faked quickly before other defenders could converge, created room and an opening for a shot, saw the goal, saw the opportunities and ripped off the perfect shot at one of the corners.  BOOOM BOOOM

The 1st-place team in that group was destined to end up in what is considered to be the harder Round of 16 bracket.  Going into the game England and Belgium were both headed to the Round of 16.  But they were tied in points (6 each) and goal differential; one of the other tiebreakers put England in 1st.  So to be blunt, England probably didn't mind that they lost and slipped to 2nd place.  Not that they should think that they're on the easy train to the final.

The last 10 minutes or so of Japan's last game was an exercise in wasting time; Japan knew they were through into the Round of 16 even if they lost and Poland was just happy to be able to go out with a win.  Crowd was very unhappy.

  2. Mason Dixie is making its debut on QVC right now; co-founder Ayeshan Abuelhia is doing the presentation.  They're selling 18 biscuits; options are buttermilk, cheddar cheese, sweet corn, or a combination of the three.  The show host is from North Carolina so he's a really happy guy right now.

Here's the listing on QVC's website.

In Group C action, pre-tournament favorites France punch their ticket to the next round, although they need to pick up their game if they hope to do much in the knock out stage.  A sad farewell to the plucky Peruvians, who are making their first WC appearance in 32 years!  A big win out of the Socceroos of Australia next week could very well see them through, while Denmark will be looking for a point.  We'll find out on June 26.

I figured out the scenarios for Argentina, Nigeria, and Iceland in Group D based on Argentina's 3-0 loss today and speculating on the result of tomorrow's Iceland-Nigeria match.  Lots of them involve tiebreaks.  The final Group D matches will be June 26 at 2 p.m., with Argentina vs. Nigeria and Iceland vs. Croatia.

Some folks think he had his mind made up even before the Cup win.  We know he wanted an extension last summer and didn't get one.  You can't discount bad feelings about that if he thought it meant "A Cup or else!" after so much (Cup-less) success. Boz may have had it right and the Caps could have come hat in hand with an offer that nullified the extension in favor of something that would wipe the slate clean.  I'm sure we'll never know.  If he doesn't go to the Islanders he could also look for a position with the Seattle expansion in 2020, maybe with an ownership component.

Or if he doesn't get a new job before the start of next season, he could pick up a mid-season job (perhaps early in the season if a team is really doing bad).

Apr 30, 2018 - "New Korean-Vietnamese Restaurant Coming to Arlington Ridge" by Bridget Reed Morawski on arlnow.com

There are informal signs up for this at 2921 S. Glebe Rd. (the former Arlington Diner space).

I don't mean to be kicking a beloved institution, but Arlington Diner was awful - I'd only been there once, but it was pretty close to abysmal.

    ---

But that's not why I'm writing - in the former Domino's Pizza space, at 2923 S. Glebe Rd, in-between the former Arlington Diner space and Starbucks, there's a small, hand-written sign up in the window that says "xxxxx Dumplings" (I can't remember what xxxxx is - it's something like Chinese Dumplings, or Asian Dumplings - I only glanced at it today, and I'm pretty sure the second word is "Dumpling" or "Dumplings.") Anyway, there's your non-news of the day. I'm not even certain if this is a separate restaurant, or if it's going to be part of 2921 S. Glebe Rd.

I thought Ovechkin was going to have a heart attack when they missed the open goal the second time.

And when the clock stopped with 1:00 left? What's up with that? That was the longest couple of minutes of my life.

That was a clock malfunction in Vegas.  There is an official timekeeper so the problem of how much time was left was solved pretty fast.

weezy, once the Knights pulled their goalie, it all made sense, but the Caps started killing the clock *immediately* after their 4th goal, which - I *think* - was several minutes before the Knights pulled their goalie (when I wrote what I wrote above, they hadn't yet pulled their goalie ... I don't think). Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd love for someone to re-watch the final eight minutes of the game with this in mind.

Not to piss on the party - man, it has been a long time since I've seen DC this happy. It has also been a long time since I've watched a sporting event that stressed me out this much (Clemson's national championship win, actually, in Jan, 2017).

Fleury was pulled with around 2 minutes left (I believe it was 2:04), and the Caps missed the open goal twice.  The fourth goal was scored with 7:37 left.

  8. Mamma Lucia's is getting some media love on NewsChannel8 for Ovechkin's extremely regular order, delivered to him at 10:30 a.m. at Kettler after practice:  Chicken Parm, plain spaghetti, 4 sauces (Alfredo, marinara, meat sauce, and Marsala), plus bread.  Apparently his favorite sauce is the Marsala because it soaks up the bread.

Edit:  As for the game, Smith-Pelly's goal is one for the ages.  Beautiful.

Driving home last night, I was surprised to see that there is a new place going in where Sultan Kabob sat vacant for so long (I've worked in Old Town for 11+ years and I think it's been vacant all that time), at the corner of Cameron and N. Henry Streets in Old Town.  The new place has hung a sign that says "Old Town Cosmopolitan Grill."  No idea when the opening is or who is connected with it.  Sort of an iffy location, as Henry St is the southbound one-way street to the Beltway access and I think only one public garage nearby, plus up and around the corner from the main drag on King.

As for Sultan Kabob, I will say they had the best awning I've ever seen.  In all that time with zero attention given to it, it never ripped or noticeably faded.  I don't know who made it, but they are top notch awning-ers.

Could it be an outpost on the Bosnia-ish restaurant of the same name also located on Route 1 in Alexandria (Hybla Valley area)?

Yes, the owners of Cosmopolitan Grill in Hybla Valley opened this new venture, Old House Cosmopolitan, earlier this week.  While the Hybla Valley location has Bosnian/German food this place is primarily German-focused.

I imagine Iceland would have something along those lines (lots of dinner cruises in the Reykjavik harbor).  The problem is that Northern Lights aren't predictable so you may not see anything while you're dining.  You have to do it every night for days unless you get lucky on the first day.

Yeah, the Northern Lights are unpredictable.  Wherever you go, whether it's Scandinavia, Alaska, or Canada's northern territories, you need to plan for a visit of a least a week.

Best show I ever saw was at Lake Louise, Alberta, in May around 20 years ago. I also recall walking back to the dorm from a late class and seeing green in the sky.

Reading the first-three paragraphs of the article, it appears that there was once a restaurant here (at 835 N. Royal St.) called "Thailand Royal Street." Both the article, and lperry's first post above, strongly imply that Thailand Royal Street moved around the corner (to 801 N. Fairfax St.), and changed its name to Royal Thai.

    ---

Extrapolating from these, I'm assuming that Thanida Thai has moved into the original space where Thailand Royal Street was before it moved around the corner. And also that it has new owners - is this correct? If so, then Thanida Thai will get its own thread.

If so, is it also correct that there is no longer a restaurant in the second location, at 801 N. Fairfax St.?

If you look at the proximity of the two locations, you might understand why I'm a bit confused, especially since the old restaurant was named "Royal Thai," but was no longer on N. Royal St.

Thailand on Royal Street was at 835 N. Royal Street, then moved to 801 N. Fairfax and changed its name to Royal Thai and Sushi Bar.  It is permanently closed; I'm not certain when that happened, but the last review on TripAdvisor was in September 2016.

Thanida Thai took over the N. Royal space, maybe a year or so ago?  Not sure if the owners are new or also owned the other restaurant.

Because the word "Royal" wasn't around enough in the neighborhood, there's also The Royal Restaurant at 734 N. St. Asaph, which has a Greek/Italian/diner menu.

I've sometimes wondered if there are non-obvious reasons for operating a restaurant - for example, Park Cafe (I swear this place wasn't that bad in the 1990s), Piratz Tavern (a college town, maybe, but downtown Silver Spring?), The Cereal Bowl (some sort of psychosis, perhaps). Maybe the owners are going to use Executive Diner as a commissary for their day-care centers or something - the success of such an operation as a pure restaurant seems almost impossible, given what I've read about their ambitions, refusal to hire a chef, etc. Sometimes, restaurants are nothing more than vanity projects (no names, no names), but that doesn't seem to be the case here at all.

That's exactly the reason:  The commissary kitchen they had was too small for their needs re: the day care centers and so they moved to a new location that had the space for them to build a larger kitchen.  But they didn't need all the square footage for the kitchen itself, so they opened the restaurant in the remaining space.  If the reviews are anything to go by, it looks like they're having serious issues balancing out the two operations.

When I was reading the article linked in dcs' original post, I thought, "We want to be a candidate for Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives."  Every once in a while a diner appears on the show and that has the everything-including-the-kitchen sink menu and most or all of it available all day or even around the clock (including a couple places from around this area).  With the daycare hook it would be one of those twists that would likely catch the show producers' attention.  Of course, this paragraph is speculation on my part.

Drink pouches seems nuts.  Do people really need bad drinks on a hot summer day.  Sounds like they will have more craft beer choices, which is always a good thing.

Personally, I don't think about Baseball until the Stanley Cup is awarded.

I can see why they'd offer the drink pouches.  It's been awhile since I've been to Nats Park, but if things haven't changed since I have these will offer more variety in the non-beer department, since if you don't drink beer and want an alcoholic beverage it's cheap wine or basic cocktails like a bourbon and Coke or a margarita (and the basic cocktails cost as much as the drink pouches).  Although just thinking of the calorie and sugar amounts those bags must have makes me cringe a bit.

I think the packaging will be a big draw, at least at first, and there will likely be people taking the empty bags home with them to reuse.  It's something new and interesting, and I'm sure there will be people foregoing a beer to try one of these (more expensive) items, especially if the beer line is long and it could be faster to get one of these.

I assume they're pre-made and will be sitting in coolers or on ice, because when it does get hot they will be a cold beverage option.  Pounding headache to come later.
