According to a sign posted at the farmers market yesterday, Heinz Thomet, organic farmer, needs someone very mature and reliable to help with set-up, selling and breakdown at Dupont Circle on Sundays.

This is the only market he attends, so focus, dedication and responsibility are important. That said, he and his family are really warm, kind people.

Here's their web site with contact information.

He found one new assistant, but still needs another. Great organic vegetables include fennel, tomatoes, lettuce and unique things like amaranath (calilloo in Jamaica or Chinese spinach, great, protein-rich, beautiful green). Pretty soon: watermelons!

Amaranth, also known as goosefoot, is a fairly ubiquitous plant that grows wild in cut places, like roadsides and at the edge of wooded paths--places where there is sun. I've seen it around D.C. a lot. You just need to avoid picking it in places where dogs pee, or wash it real well. As with all edible greens, young is better. Although, if you allow it to flower and go to seed, the seeds can be ground to make a quite nutritious flour.
