Dear friends -

The next Temperance Tour will be held on Saturday, April 26 in Washington, DC. Temperance, you ask, what's that? It was a social reform movement that tried to sober up America, and ultimately dissolved after the disastrous "noble experiment" of Prohibition (1920-1933). This is in conjunction with WalkingTown, DC, (http://www.walkingtowndc.org/) which is offering 80+ FREE walking tours throughout the weekend.

I'll be your tour guide to regale you with stories of long-ago as if they happened just yesterday (well, 75 years ago). The tour will start at 1:00 PM at the Cogswell Temperance Fountain at the Archives / Navy Memorial Metro station on the Green/Yellow Line (the statue is on the east side of 7th Street, just south of the Starbucks; it's got a large bird on top). From there we'll head up to Calvary Baptist Church in Chinatown, where the Anti-Saloon League had its national kickoff meeting in 1895.

Please bring a Metro card, as we'll take the Red Line to Dupont Circle to visit the Woodrow Wilson House, and hear a docent tell us about President Wilson and Prohibition. If you wish to stay after the tour finishes at 4:00 PM, we can grab a beer at the Brickskeller, which is just down the street. Other than that, the tour is completely FREE as part of WalkingTown, DC.

You can read more details about the tour on my book website. (http://www.prohibitionhangover.com/temptour.html) For those who can't participate on the 26th, the Temperance Tour is available as an iPod or MP3 audio download on AudioSteps. Hope to see you on April 26! And please tell a friend about the tour - or bring one along.
