  1. The Sly Horse Tavern in Crofton appears to have opened in 1985 (and closed in 2013). I lived in Crofton for 2 years and never made it there (apparently I didn't miss much).

The original Adam's Ribs (now apparently Adam's Taphouse and Grille) in Edgewater opened in 1981. They have several locations around Baltimore, Annapolis, and the Eastern Shore.

Garry's Grill opened in Severna Park in 1991.

The Old Stein Inn opened in Edgewater in 1983.

  2. I was there in early March. Can't give many specifics, but I really enjoyed my meal. I'm a Balkan food novice. Five of us did the Balkan Experience, $49 for unlimited small plates and drinks. We ordered an insane amount of food, which was easy to do because our server was very available and accommodating. I remember some things were so-so, some things were delicious, and nothing was bad. One in my party was from Serbia, and he approved.

And yet it has been crowded all 3-4 times I've visited

I'm happy to report that it wasn't crowded yesterday at mid-day, but I'm sure that's not usually their busy time.

Its a sports bar.  Its very very definitely not a destination for foodies.

I'd argue, though, that it fails even as a sports bar. My husband asked them to put the Red Sox game on, and they put the Nats game on thinking that that would satisfy him. Hello, two different teams. Granted, the Red Sox aren't in our market, but usually sports bars have access to out of market games. Also, no one ever came back to tell us they couldn't get the Red Sox game. They just put the Nats game on, then when our waitress noticed my husband was watching the Red Sox via the mlb.tv app on his phone, she realized they never put the Red Sox game on one of the TVs. The bartender said, "Oh, I thought you just wanted the baseball game, so I put the Nats game on." Just total incompetence.

I didn't go there expecting haute cuisine, but this was many levels below even minimally competent pub grub.

And why do they call themselves a brewing company when they don't brew any beer??

  4. Ugh, my husband wanted to go here today, and I didn't push back. A food loving friend had told me it wasn't good, but I hadn't read anything here or seen the 2.5 stars on Yelp. Not much new to say except that it remains terrible.

Our server was nice but clueless. My 2-year-old started demanding juice as soon as we sat down (she associates juice with restaurants because she doesn't really drink it at home), so we ordered some apple juice at our first opportunity, and it took forever to come. They weren't busy. Thankfully my daughter's meal came quickly, but the runner put a piping hot plate down in front of her. No harm no foul, and I appreciate that they rushed the kids meal out, but does it make sense to put a piping hot plate down in front of a two-year-old? The pulled pork nachos consisted mainly of mushy pork, greasy chips, and Velveeta-esque cheese. I had a Cuban sandwich with very muddy flavors. I'm not even sure what it consisted of, although I did see some pickles. My husband's Buffalo chicken sandwich looked very dry (and he confirmed it was dry). The homemade potato chips were decent.

My husband asked if they could put the Red Sox game on, and that never happened despite the fact that they bill themselves as a sports bar.

How is this place still in business? I want it to go away.

  5. Thanks to this thread I'm thinking about Sergio's for my upcoming birthday dinner since I suspect we (read: my husband) won't get our act together to get a babysitter so will therefore have our 2-year-old in tow. I've never been, we live nearby, and it sounds like they're child friendly and delicious, so I think it'll fit the bill.

  6. They also have a sibling shop in Wheaton (on Georgia across from the Safeway, additional parking in the rear) called Yummy in My Tummy.

There's a new ice cream place called Yummy in My Tummy in Wheaton that serves ice cream made by the daughter and grandson of the owners of Tropical Ice Cream, which did indeed close, at least for awhile. (Apparently the now retired owner of Tropical Ice Cream also helps with Yummy in My Tummy's ice cream from time to time.) I live between Tropical Ice Cream and Yummy in My Tummy, and there's been a lot of discussion on my neighborhood listserv about both places. One neighbor recently reported seeing a "Reopening Soon" sign in the window at Tropical Ice Cream, but I haven't seen that myself. Every time I've been to Yummy in My Tummy this summer it's been empty -- they need more customers! I'm pretty sure I've seen Jamaican food there as well.

[Yummy in My Tummy does have Jamaican food.]

I honestly think this game will be remembered - long into the future - as having revolutionized the use of the internet.

    You might be right.

I have now spent 90 seconds to understand this. I hate to sound like a crotchety old lady, but I have little to no interest in playing this game.

  8. I'd normally not be interested in this place, but I'm thinking it'll be a good Silver Spring option when I have my semi-unadventurous husband and my 2-year-old in tow (if we can ever get in).

I'm wondering if the stuffed quahog appetizer mentioned above (no longer on the menu) was a riff on the classic Rhode Island "Stuffies." I don't think I've ever seen a Stuffie anywhere outside of Rhode Island.

you chose to focus on filing the return

Exactly, because the only point I was trying to make with regard to taxes was that many people in the country illegally file tax returns. I'm starting to sound like a broken record!

    22 hours ago, Ericandblueboy said:

So the only reason to file is to get a refund.

Nope, as I explained earlier, if people here illegally hope to legalize their immigration status through amnesty or some other means in the future they file tax returns because it helps them demonstrate "good moral character."

If people are working illegally and having income tax withheld from their paycheck with a fake SSN I sincerely doubt they're getting a refund when they file their tax return using an ITIN. As far as the IRS is concerned, no income tax was withheld from their pay. And filing a tax return using a fake SSN would defeat the purpose of filing the return to demonstrate good moral character.

why shouldn't our immigration laws be enforced?

I think they should be enforced, and I haven't seen anyone here argue otherwise.

And with that I'm going to try really hard to disengage now as well.
