  1. After a marvelous evening at the Shirlington Dog Park Sunday evening, wherein the park was pretty docile and me and my bestie's dogs had one of the water sections pretty much to themselves and had a great time and were thoroughly dirty we decided we needed margaritas (yes, yes I know Holy Cow doesn't have margaritas I am getting there).  The dog rules at Shirlington are not really suitable for our pups so we headed into Del Ray with the intention of going to Taqueria Poblano.  The patio was at capacity so we wandered down to Holy Cow.  We scored a nice spay on the patio.  I got a basic burger and fries, diet coke and Port City Optimal Whit.  My friend got a Southern burger.  I actually thought the burger was very good and had a nice quality of beef.  I had it with lettuce, pickle and maybe tomato and some ketchup- very good.  It reminds me of what I wish an Elevation Burger would taste like, but doesn't.  Bestie's burger looked good.  The fries were fresh cut, although they are the type that end up being mostly small little bites with a few long fries.  They tasted good and I know they are fresh, but being descendant from Maryland I am more into a long board walk style fry or etc.  The small stubs don't impress me much even if they taste good, which these did.  The cold beer on the patio people watching on a nice evening was sublime.  We had really nice service and overall it was a good experience and I would go back.  When not looking for a greasy burger, but wanting a good burger this could definitely go on my list I liked the taste of the meat a lot.

Wait, what?? They have vet services while you eat? "I'll be right back with your dog and your check!"

  2. I've been wanting to try the Clover brewed coffee, so I managed to get a coveted parking space today at the one Starbucks in Falls Church with a Clover machine. Someone was pulling out of a shaded spot, in what has to be one of the stupidest parking lots in town. I didn't have to brandish a weapon or anything to park!

So I went in and saw the chalkboard of special coffees. I bought a pound of Gold Coast and ordered a vent of Clover-brewed Komodo Dragon. "Do you take milk in your coffee?" "Sometimes" "Well, this will be filled to the rim, take a sip rather than spilling any out if you want room".

I watched the machine at work, which was entertaining. I didn't bother to stop at the sugar/milk bar, and drove home. I picked it up, and took a sip while waiting at a light. Oh yes, this doesn't need any additives! I'm sipping it now, and very much enjoying it. I wish every Starbucks had a Clover.

  3. I'm a bit confused by all the love for a large national chain that produces a middling product. There are so many indie coffee shops you could and should be supporting before going to Peets.

This is only a partial list, via DCist.

No argument with that, but since my current situation is living in VA and working in MD, it's not likely I'll be making a special trip to DC, with all the hassle that includes, for a cup of coffee. Chains to the rescue!

  4. Sunday evening dinner was a boneless Leg 'o Lamb (Legolam, wasn't he a character in the Hobbit?)1 Said lamb was done in the Julia Child style larded with garlic cloves and covered with a paste of dijon, soy sauce, olive oil and rosemary. It was accompanied by white rice and roasted asparagus. A friend brought a bottle of a temparnillo/cabernet blend. And immediately after dinner, Game of Thrones.

1Well, he was in the parody "Bored of the Rings"

  5. CG, at least pre-Katrina was always happy to wrap one to go securely enough to pack in your luggage to enjoy after getting home (don't think I could manage to eat one sitting in coach, and besides, if you wait, the bread will have soaked up the goodness and be even better).

  6. Meatball - Really good and flavorful, but note that it is just one meatball.

A little man walked up and down,

To find an eating place in town.

He read the menu through and through,

To see what fifteen cents could do.

    One meat ball,

    One meat ball,

He could afford but one meat ball.

He told the waiter near at hand,

The simple dinner he had planned.

The guests were startled one and all,

To here that waiter loudly call,

    One meat ball,

    One meat ball,

This here gent wants one meat ball.

The little man felt ill at ease,

Said, "Some bread, sir, if you please."

The waiter hollered down the hall,

"You gets no bread with one meatball.

The little man felt very sad,

For one meat ball is all he had,

And in his dreams he hears that call,

You gets no bread with one meat ball.

    One meat ball,

    One meat ball,

You gets no bread with one meat ball.

  7. Have you checked at Aphrodite in Bailey's Crossroads? It's a Greek/Middle Eastern grocery store next door to the Thai grocery, which is next door to Rabieng.

Was not aware of that, I'll have to check it out. The shipping of those noodles cost more than the noodles. Thanks!

  8. I've been looking for a place with good pastitsio since my local greek takeout joint just isn't up to snuff.  For twenty bucks I'm hoping it's worth it here.

I just ordered Pastitsio noodles from Amazon, as there seems to be no place in the area to buy them. It's not hard to make.

  9. I think he posts this stuff to show people what kind of crap he has to put up with generally.

You are probably right. Compare the comments section of the NYT (thoughtful, insightful) for any story to that of the WaPo (hillbilly cage match).

  10. When I was 12, his Hells Angels book was out in paperback at the local corner grocery/candy store and I bought it (not sure what that says about me at 12  ). Imagine my surprise when I was in study hall in high school and a friend passed me the latest Rolling Stone that had a large excerpt of F&LinLV. I was blown away and devoured it. When F&L on the Campaign Trail came out, I read that. Later, in college, I took a class that examined several contemporary works (Joan Didion, etc) and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was one of them. He was scheduled to do a reading at my school too, but when I showed up to the lecture hall with a friend, there was a note saying it was cancelled to a death in Thompson's family. Maybe Thompson himself put that note up and spent the evening in one of the local watering holes.

Check it out Don, you can get a rush just from reading it.

    Time for someone new
Isnt the Wp giving early outs? If so why dont you take one so subscribers and readers can enjoy someone new. Someone who isnt so prissy and pretentious and has a clue about food. Its time for you to start checking out assisted living communities.

My reply would not have been nearly as gracious as Tom's.
  12. I would agree that they must be recreations, I doubt prison guards were taking photos of food decades ago in any of those cases. The photos are interesting combined with the name, crime, and other data. And they likely didn't come on fine china.  A single olive?
