  1. We got two recipes from her today. I made the one for me, will make my wife’s tomorrow probably. But I loved, loved loved mine. Complex but straightforward to put together. The complexity came from adding cinnamon smoke to my glass ahead of time which I never would have thought of. The cocktail combined mezcal, amaro, sweet vermouth and sherry and I would order this over and over again in a bar. She nailed it.

From last Saturday, beautiful Sapidus Farms Oysters w/ Ramp Mignonette (Keepwell Vinegar) that I shucked for the first time.

I purchased my Oyster Oyster Shuck Kit for $36 online via Tock on Friday night at 8PM from SCRAPPY'S Bagel Bar Pop-up.  On Saturday, I picked up at Estadio Restaurant.  Included in the kit were 1 dozen Sapidus Farms Oysters, Ramp Mignonette, 1 Oyster Shucking Knife, 1 Kitchen Towel and 1 set of easy instructions to follow.

I believe the kits will continue to be offered online at SCRAPPY'S.  You can order Friday night starting at 8PM for Saturday pickup and order Saturday night starting at 8PM for Sunday pickup.  The Spring Bialy, Pizza Bagel, Bagel Sandwiches and assortment of Bagels and Schmears are super tasty.

I look forward to purchasing more oysters and sauce for future enjoyment.

Beautiful.  We got oysters as part of our CSA that last two weeks, and I enjoyed them more than I thought I would.  Had never shucked oysters before but the effort is worthwhile!

I'm craving good sushi.  Has anyone had any luck with takeout/delivery options?

Our neighbors got pickup from Sushi Ogawa the other day.  This is the $90 "Sushi and Rolls Assortment" on their take out menu.  They said it was good and the fish looks nice, but it's too bad there's not more variety.  Chalk it up to supply chain issues I guess?  Or people just wanting the basics in the current circumstances?

Here is about $90 of sushi from Nama Sushi that we got tonight. It was very good. It’s the $30 sushi assortment plus a variety of a la carte nigiri and rolls.

I appreciated them having a decent though perhaps not decadent variety on offer, though these are not decadent times.

Wanted to give these guys a quick plug for running a great special for delivery on Caviar right now.  It's a Fried Chicken Feast ($40) and comes with 2 enormous breasts, 2 thighs, 2 wings, a side of mashed potatoes, 2 biscuits, gravy, and a salad.  We ordered this with a side of Truffled Mac & Cheese ($12) and Crab Hush Puppies ($12) and it was delicious and enough food to feed 6+ people easily.  Chicken was moist and well spiced, the gravy with the potatoes rocked, and my kids loved the mac & cheese.  Would definitely recommend if you're looking for something good for the family that won't break the bank.

Ha! We randomly got this tonight, but I didn’t see your post until now. Agree with your assessment 100%. I’ll note that pickup is also an option, which is what we did, and that was quick and easy.

I hope the board too comes back online.  If not, I will really miss interacting with you all online, and hope to find a way to connect with you all.  Especially for the picnics, cooking club and dinners out whether planned in advance or just on a whim.  I have really enjoyed time with all of you.  Please feel free to PM me with your email.  I don't want to publish my personal email, but will send it back to you.  Or you can find me on Instagram or the dreaded fbook.

For anyone that wants to continue the cooking club, or have a dining out club like Steve from Chow has set up, if you send me your email, I will compile a group email list and send it out for people to use.

Don, I hope you are alright.

My thoughts and positive vibes are going out to all of you right now during this difficult time.

I hope Don is alright as well, and that this community gets up and running again.  Just in case we need a place to regroup, commiserate, plan next steps, etc., I've created a subreddit on reddit.com called DRockwellDCusers.  It's a private group...click on the link and "join" (of course you'll have to join Reddit if you're not already on that, but that's pretty easy) and I'll get a message I think and let you in.  I'm the "moderator" for this though I have no intention of moderating anything, just wanted to create a space where all of us can chat.

    Stay healthy,

    Dan

An update on Union Market shopping, as this continues to be an evolving issue, and there have been some hiccups along the way, but I believe everybody is trying to figure things out.

    1. If you have Mercato Green, they provide free deliveries on orders of over $35. You can sign up right now for a 14-day free trial of Mercato Green, and after that it's $9 per month.

    2. While initially all of Union Market was considered one vendor, that's evolved as apparently some vendors were running quite a bit behind schedule on putting together their orders. So right now District Fishwife and the Creamery can both be ordered under the "Union Market" hub, and orders of over $35 get free delivery. That's particularly useful for the Creamery, because often we may just want milk, and it's easier to hit $35 combined with the Fishwife. The Creamery also has cheese, yogurt, butter and eggs.

    3. If you're looking to push your order at the Fishwife over $35 you can throw in a bag of frozen shrimp, canned tuna or sardines, or a bottle of wine.

    4. If you want to be certain your order is correct, place your order online and then call the vendor directly. It's basically impossible to get in touch with Mercato, but I've had great luck placing my order, then calling Harvey's and specifying what it is I'm looking for.

    5. In my few attempts to do so I've had a lot of trouble scheduling a delivery from a regular grocery store, so Union Market has made things work for me in the interim, along with my CSA. Almaala Farms has a much smaller selection, but I've had good luck getting vegetables and some other items through them.

I had basically not done grocery delivery before this whole thing, so I've been learning as I go. I hope this is useful.

I ordered from fishwife and Harvey’s via Mercato a couple of weeks ago. At the end of the day it worked out fine but it was kind of strange that mercato treated it as two different orders and they arrived on different days. I don’t know if that’s changed at all since then. Quality of what was delivered was great as expected.

Seylou Bakery has online ordering for pickup. 48 hous notice. We are picking up Sunday after we pick up our pre-orders from DUpont. Will report back.

    Seylou order page

Super easy to order from them. Forgot to add they offer flours of many types. Their pastries seem to all come in groups of three for $15.

They deliver, too (maybe limited area?).  We got a delivery from them today, exactly at the time we specified last weekend when we put the order in.

  9. Last week I got a case of random wines selected (and delivered) by Ace Beverage.  Have enjoyed them all so far. Tonight's is a red Burgundy that I've already consumed way more than intended...delicious.  Giraudon Bourgogne Chitry imported by Wine Traditions.

A friend just got one of the All Purpose CSA boxes, and it looks like more places are stepping in to fill this role.  If not for themselves (of course it's partially for themselves!), then for their suppliers who they will need if and when they open back up.  I'm all on board to support that where and when we can, although for budgetary and logistical reasons it can't fully replace "normal" groceries for us.  We have been getting milk and eggs from Big Bear cafe along with our morning coffee pick up, and I'm looking at getting an order through Number 1 Sons who appears to have partnered with several of their fellow FreshFarm vendors for CSA boxes.  And after letting it slide last year after a few years of good experiences we're certainly going to re-up our CSA subscription to the neighborhood farm.

What did your friend say about the All Purpose CSA? I called the Shaw location this afternoon about them and they said they sold out within 30 minutes. Apparently they’re going to do it again Friday.

  11. Here in DC we’ve done Chiko (twice), All Purpose, and Little Serow (all great) and the fried chicken bucket from Cork (disappointing). The kids also insisted on Dominos (*) one night. And we were literally on our way to Two Amy’s when I learned that they had closed. 🙁

[(*) NB - We don't have a thread on Dominos. Please refer to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and/or Yelp. Cheers, DR.
    PS - There's this.]

  12. Might be a good time to join a CSA. There are a number of booze deliver options available...I opted to go with Ace Beverage and it was great-my order was delivered at no charge the next day, left on my front steps as I requested.

For restaurant takeout here’s a list of options from around the area (not sure how up to date they are keeping it).

final tip: if you’re ordering delivery from Whole Foods via the Amazon app you’ve probably seen it’s hard to find a delivery window. They seem to open new windows up at midnight, so put your order in, and then go to your cart right at midnight and you should see a few more windows you can choose from a few days out.

I get the sinking feeling that lock-down/self-quarantine is just delaying the inevitable

This idea assumes that the number of deaths the virus causes is a simple function of how many people get it. This sounds reasonable but it is, counterintuitively, *not true*.  The death rate is a function of how many people get it *and* over what period of time. Without the lockdowns you get spikes in cases and spikes in cases mean sick people die because they get denied care (eg rationed ventilators) that could otherwise save them. The lockdowns will save lives over the course of the disease, they don’t just push deaths down the road.
